Spider-man: Far from Home

I was going to binge watch Stranger Things tomorrow, but I might have to wait, because new canon would interfere with me wallowing in all my Spider-man big emotions. Many many spoilers behind the cut. ExpandRead more... )

Rocketman (and also Tolkien)

I know absolutely nothing about Elton John's life, but this film was a blast--formula, yes, but doing that formula SO WELL, with fantastic musical numbers--but what I really came out of it was the thought that the real love story of the movie was Elton and Bernie, and now I want ALL THE SLASH. OMG Jamie Bell's soulful eyes were like, 90% of the film for me. (I didn't even really like Jamie Bell before this).

And speaking of rareslash coming out of biographical films that I want to see: Last weekend I saw (and really enjoyed) Tolkien, and that also had an unrequited love thing--in this case Tolkien's friend Geoffrey silently pining for him. Has anyone encountered any fic for this? Searching the actual pairing got me nothing, and searching "Tolkien" on A03 is practically impossible since all I get are hits for the Hobbit and LOTR.

Thor: Ragnarok

Without getting spoilery, let me just say, this was a complete blast! I did miss the characters from previous films who weren't in it, but the addition of Cate Blanchett and Tessa Thompson and Karl Urban more than compensated, and I loved Idris Elba's somewhat expanded role in this one, and Mark Ruffalo was fantastic. And the Loki-Thor stuff was really everything I wanted. Plus, it's definitely one of the funniest Marvel films. Altogether highly recommended.

P.S. Have I really not posted since July? Yikes.

Hail Caesar

I enjoyed Hail Caesar much more than I was expecting. I generally like but do not love Coen brothers films; their style of humor is not generally mine, but I laughed quite a lot at this film. ExpandRead more... )

Overall, if you have any love for 50s movies or Hollywood shenanigans from the "golden age of filmmaking," I'd highly recommend it.

The Martian

I confess, I mainly went to see "The Martian" because of Sebastian Stan. (His role in it is really quite small--I wouldn't go see it just for him). It is, however, the BEST example of competence porn I can ever remember seeing in a movie, so if you are into scientists doing their science thing in life-or-death situations and doing it very, very well, this will totally be your jam. I enjoyed it much more than I was expecting to. It also had a much more diverse cast than I was expecting, which was definitely a pleasant surprise.

The Intern

The preview I saw made this film look charming, but potentially sexist. It was indeed ridiculously charming--I suspect I'm going to buy it just for comfort watching in the future--but actually I thought in many ways it was remarkably feminist. (Spoilers behind the cut) ExpandRead more... )

Jupiter Ascending

Damn you, small town movie theaters!

I was planning on going to see Joss Whedon's "Much Ado About Nothing" for my birthday, but the closest it is playing is two hours away, and I don't own a car. Hence, a poll:

It's perfectly reasonable to spend $68 on trainfare, spend 2 hours each way on the train and then walk three miles in each direction to see this movie, right?

You could always figure out the bus routes or take a cab to skip the 6 mile walk

You are a CRAZY person. CRAZY.

You might as well spend $20 more and go to San Francisco for your birthday, where you could see the movie and do fun SF things

Man of Steel

Nothing about the previews actually made me want to see this film, so when I say I liked it more than I expected to, that's not necessarily saying a lot. I went mainly because (a) I knew my SV peeps would be talking about it, so I wanted to be able to join the conversation, and (b) to see Amy Adams as Lois Lane.

When I say I liked it, I should clarify that I really, really liked about the first 90 minutes of it, and I really disliked the last 50 or so minutes. Partly that has to do with some alterations they made to the usual Superman mythology, some of which I really thought were fantastic and some I hated.

Spoilers behind the cut, obviously. ExpandRead more... )

Many random things

I don't usually go to (non-work-related) social events during the week, but an old colleague was in town last night and talked me into going to see "Tropic Thunder," and I have to say I laughed my ass off. ExpandVery slight spoilers )

Now I have two completely unrelated requests for my all-knowing flist:

1. Anyone out there who is widely read in CW RPS, can you point me to some good stories with Jensen/Christian Kane or Jared/Jensen/Christian Kane? I have a friend looking for recs, and I don't usually read stories with Chris as a central character, so I'm at a loss.

2. Should I update to the latest version of Firefox, now that it keeps prompting me to every 12 hours or so? I know it doesn't work with LJ Hook, but that's not a big concern for me, but I've heard there's something wonky about the new address bar, or something? What are the pros and cons of switching?

Mamma Mia!

Is it a spoiler to say that Pierce Brosnan really can't sing? Not that I really cared--everybody else was amazing, and that was the most fun I've had at a movie in a really long time. ExpandMore reactions. Not really spoilery, but cut just in case )
