Smallville 7.02: Kara

Well, my VCR worked, except it might have cut off a little of the ending.

[SORRY!!! My j key is only sporadically working, which is why the cut tag didn't work first time. Hope I didn't spoil anyone!!!]

Did anything happen after Lex said "Use any resources necessary to find her"? That's when my tape cut off.

Overall, I mostly liked it, but let me start with the things I was conflicted about:

--While I love that they're really setting Lois on her journalistic path this season, and I actually like the new snarky editor of the Planet, I can tell I'm just going to hate the Lois v. Chloe storyline this is clearly setting up. I sometimes feel like the only Smallville fan who likes Lois and Chloe equally, and all I can see coming from this fandom-wise is even more entrenchment of the Chloe v. Lois wars. Oh joyous day. I'll be sitting over here as Switzerland, biting my tongue a lot and giving myself an ulcer.

--Kara. I like what seems to be the basic idea behind this character: a family connection to Clark, someone who can teach him about Krypton while he mentors her in the ways of humans. I just am not sure that the actress sold me on this character--and I wasn't too impressed by that "Clark teaches her superhearing" scene, either. She can fly naturally but not use her hearing? Okay, whatever. Kind of like her extremely colloquial command of English , I guess we're just supposed to assume her AI/matrix thing gave her selective knowledge, or something?

Things I generally liked

--Ooh, new bad guys on the scene! The Department of Euphemistically-named-so-they-don't-get-in-trouble-but-its
obviously-Homeland Security! Intriguing. Maybe they're the people that kidnapped Lionel? It is about time we had some new players in this show.

--The giant missing McGuffin crystal, that's equipped with lots of Kryptonian power. Hmm, I smell the return of Brainiac coming out of this somewhere done the road (but I am unspoiled, so please do not confirm if this is true).

--Jor-El is back? When did Jor-El come back? Still, it's nice to have his cryptic presence again, and LOOK: an actual good reason for Clark to delay his training: to watch that Kryptonian spygirl. Actually, I'm a little with Jor-EL on this: Clark switched from his justified paranoia about mysteriously appearing Kryptonians to trust awfully fast. I mean, the viewers know she is Supergirl and therefore good, but for all Clark knows she could totally be feeding him lines to get him to trust her, a la Milton Fine.

--Lionel managed to find someone to confess for Lex in what, the hour before he got caught in the dam burst? That is one quick-thinking bit of magnificent bastardy, there.

--Kara and Clark's discussion about how even advanced civilizations can manage to blow themselves up. A little anvilly, but never a bad message to hear.

Things I loved with the power of a thousand yellow suns

LEX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I could put more exclamation points here, but you get the idea. Holy crap, Lex, even in reformed penitent mode you are finally beginning to show the world-mastering brilliance you need to have, figuring out that Lana wasn't really dead and actually being able to track her down.

And I can't help it, I loved every second of that Lexana scene, even if his penitence was a bit over-the-top. I really thought he was playing her when he walked forward into the gun, and a large part of me kind of wanted him to get his badass on and point it back at her, but overall I was really glad that he told her she'd be safe if she came back to Smallville, because it strongly reminded me of the resolution between Lex and Lana in my very favorite Lana story ever, [livejournal.com profile] mskatej's Seule et Amoreuse .

And I know people are still arguing about whether or not he did the fake baby thing, but DUDE. He CLONED HER. That is arguably far, far creepier and more obsessive and skeery than just faking a baby, and no fucking wonder Lana felt she had to fake her death and frame him to get away. I was on the fence on the "framed for murder" thing, but I think I'm off it now, because cloning people is freaky scary to me.

Though the Lexana fan in me can't help but think of fic in which Lex clones Clark, and sigh in happiness that he really did love her in his crazy obsessive Lex way, even though he's got another savior figure superpowered crush right now .

And LANA!!!!!!!!!!! Oh, Lana, I do very much love it when you embrace your inner Luthor, and I think you managed it best when you attempted to escape from them. Blowing up your own clone to fake your death is inspired! And I can't help it, I found it really sexy was very impressed that she played around with the idea of killing Lex for the betterment of humanity, knowing that she'd get away with it because she's dead. I knew she wouldn't go through with it, of course, because she really does represent the midpoint between Clark and Lex on the show. I think is right in her predictions that Clark will eventually realize he's unable to be with Lana because her moral code is different--the fact that she'd at all consider killing Lex is a sign of that--and yet at the same time she's *not* a coldblooded killer (regardless of her self-defense body count), and that's what separates her from Lex.

Other random miscellaneous episode stuff I've forgotten to mention:
--I assume Chloe was looking at profiles of random Belle Reve inmates because she's obsessing over what her new power means for her? Or did I miss something?
--Speaking of Chloe, I really loved her confrontation with Lex, though it surprises me that she so easily dismissed the possibility that Lana was alive
--Although I can see that in the future I'm probably going to just completely avoid talking about journalistic storylines altogether to avoid participating in Chloe v. Lois 2007 extravaganza, I did really love how passionately and doggedly Lois went after the alien ship story, and how the new editor of the Planet recognized that.
