Blood Ties

The goblet broke! *Cue music of teh ominous* Actually, it did make me jump when it happened, and worry that perhaps Mike's death (or Vicki's death?) is going to happen at some point in the future, since Vicki really couldn't change the past.

I am not a huge fan of these Groundhog Day scenarios, but this episode worked for me because Vicki very quickly caught on and was pretty effective in making changes throughout the scenario. And I thought it leant weight to the plot making the box the actual Pandora's box.

What really made the episode for me, though, was the nuances it gave to the love triangle. I thought Vicki's jealousy about Mike wearing the lucky tie she gave him on a "date" with another woman was amusing--and rather in character, since even though Vicki has mostly moved on, she is definitely the kind of person to maintain a proprietary interest in people she has dated before. And I loved the advice Henry gave her about moving on.

But then Mike's death scene just completely broke me. And Henry came off as rather cold in that scene, but he wasn't wrong: Vicki had no way of knowing that Mike wouldn't just keep dying over and over, and getting rid of Pandora's Box *was* the right thing to do. I like the fact that Henry was actually the one encouraging Vicki to do the right thing in this episode, not just in regards to that scene but also earlier when he warned Vicki that using the demon marks was an extremely unwise thing to do.

On the other hand, I can't help be glad that Henry was, as Vicki put it, willing to destroy the world because he trusted she could fix it. They needed that kind of epic gesture to counterbalance the fact that Mike had just died helping Vicki. (And I really want Vicki to be equally drawn to both of them, because I like them both, but Mike's death had me kind of leaning in his direction).

I also loved that Vicki was willing to give Mike up for his own good. Of course, Mike has no intention of dating another coworker, but *Vicki* didn't know that, so it was a real sacrifice on her part.

And guh, I always love when Henry feeds on her.

Sorry for the late reply--stupid LJ doesn't want to let me post comments lately.

I thought it was an especially powerful gesture for him to make considering (a) it preserved the life of his romantic rival and (b) he thought it was the wrong thing to do.
