Oh God. The fact that Martin's swiftness is what saves John in the future but ends in his own death was painfully ironic.

I know. Poor Martin.

I'm not sure about the Wizard of Oz thing, either. Since I've never read the book, I can only go by the movie. Young person stuck in a strange place, makes friends, but is pursued by someone who wants to kill them. All the person wants to do is to go home. I suppose it works for the Marty and, with a little reaching, works for John, too, with Skynet being the Wicked Witch who keeps sending her minions after him. Too bad for John that this is his home.

Also, I really do think John's destiny is worse than Sam's. Sam seems, to some extent, to have some control of his destiny because it requires action on his part to achieve it. By killing himself (and making Dean promise not to revive him) that would put an end to it.

John's destiny is coming with no action on his part. He has to live, and not just for himself, but for all of mankind. He and Sarah are struggling to make sure that Skynet isn't created and his destiny doesn't happen.

It does lead to an interesting question - Dean might be forced to kill his brother, the brother he's protected and loved, in order to save the world. If, through some convoluted plot, it turned out that to keep Skynet from happening and to save the world all Sarah had to do was kill John - would she?
