More SPN recs

Thanks very much to [livejournal.com profile] latxcvi, [livejournal.com profile] lonelywalker, [livejournal.com profile] cormallen and [livejournal.com profile] ciaan for even more snowflakes!

This particular rec post is in honor of [livejournal.com profile] slinkling, who is finally current with SPN in real time (yay!) and looking for recs. These are all episode codas for season 5 episodes--the vast majority of them are gen. This has truly been an excellent season for codas; these are just a few of my favorites, organized by episode:

Free To Be You and Me Coda:

Truth, Denial, and Other Useless Words by [livejournal.com profile] laulan (Gen). A lot of people were upset when Dean told Castiel he wasn't missing Sam in this episode, but the thing is, he has given up Sam before--and it didn't hurt then, either. Until it did. Angst level: about 6.

"The End" Codas

This episode has produced a lot of wonderful codas, especially among Dean/Castiel writers. These are just my two current favorites, both of which explore how they got to where they were in 2014:

The Last Five Years (Dean/Castiel, Dean/ofcs, Castiel/ofcs) by Jennifer Lupin. Moving back and forth in time, this story explores how Dean and Castiel came together and how they fell apart. Angst level: 8.

Not All the Way Through by [livejournal.com profile] tracy_loo_who (futureDean/Castiel, pastDean/Castiel, Dean/ofcs, Castiel/ofcs). So hurty but so good: Castiel thought he would follow Dean anywhere, until Dean changed. But his faith in futureDean is somewhat restored by the Dean from the past. Angst level: 9.

Abandon All Hope Codas
I think this episode has already produced more codas than any other SPN episode except perhaps Mystery Spot, and rightfully so, because Ellen and Jo Harvelle kicked almighty ass (and if you didn't think so, I don't really want to hear about it). These are just a few of my favorites.

Never Have I Ever by [livejournal.com profile] thevinegarworks (Gen). The night before, Castiel learns a drinking game from Jo and Ellen. Probably the least angsty of all the recs on this page.

And We Are here as on a darkling plain by [livejournal.com profile] lunabee34 (Gen). Three brief vignettes from the perspectives of Gabriel, Dean, and Ellen: achy, beautiful, and heartbreaking. Ellen's especially is a punch to the gut, but I also really loved Gabriel's. Angst level: 6.

Your Ears tuned to the roar by [livejournal.com profile] musesfool (Gen). A fabulous look at the evolution of Jo Harvelle, Hunter. Angst level: 5.

Hey Little Sister, Keep on Dreaming by [livejournal.com profile] little_murmurs (Gen). Jo's thoughts at the end. Angst level: probably really only about 5 or 6, but of all these stories this is the one that made me lose it as bad as watching the actual episode itself (which made me cry for probably a solid half hour). YMMV.

Ok, wow, I did not realize when I started compiling these that every single damn story was a giant angst-fest, so I must recommend something light and funny so you all aren't burying your heads under your pillows for a week after reading these. So here: LIGHT AND FLUFFY SPN AU FIC of the Dean/Castiel variety:

Peanut-Butter Pumpkin Wedding Cake by [livejournal.com profile] sparseparseley (Dean/Castiel, Sam/Jess). Lovely AU in which Sam and Dean aren't hunters; Dean is a mechanic working extra hours as a bartender for a strip club to help put Sam through school. At a bachelorette party hosted by the club, he meets the extremely hot writer Castiel, but he is under the mistaken impression that Castiel is actually the groom-to-be, so he's very conflicted by the signals he's getting from him. Schmoop level: somewhere between 4 and 5.
