sex scenes in fanfic
I found these two polls about whether we read fanfic primarily for the sex interesting, because over the holiday weekend I actually ran out of my backlog of SPN/J2 stuff to read, and I was surfing around delicious looking for interesting stuff. And depending on my mood, I can read in all sorts of fandoms I've never been active in (SGA or Merlin, for example) or fandom loves of the past (Due South, Buffy)--just to name a few I was reading in this weekend--but I almost never read the sex scenes in those stories. I skim them in case they contain interesting plot developments, but I don't read them closely because --with the exception of some specific d/s kinky stuff--they don't do anything for me.
Weird, no? I mean, it's not like I'm a big OTP girl; in SPN I'm just as happy to read Dean/Castiel or Sam/Gabriel or Sam/Lucifer as I am to read Dean/Sam, and I also really love Dean/Jo and John/Jo and Sam/Jess and Sam/Ruby and John/Mary, and in all of those I rarely skim the sex scenes unless they're really badly written. Similarly, in RPS even though I mainly read J2 I'll pretty much read either of the J's with any of their former or current girlfriends or with JDM and enjoy it a lot. But for some reason I am OTshow, or something like that--it has to be SPN-related or it just doesn't do it for me. Even stuff I would have saved under my "hotlikeburning" delicious tag from prior fandoms, if I had had delicious then, doesn't really, umm, have the same effect anymore. I can still love the stories, but they aren't effective as porn anymore. I guess SPN characters (in their fictional or RPS identities) are my kink now?
Anyone else have fanfic-related TMI they'd like to share?

when I first started reading fanfic, I read it because it was *more* of my fav show at the time. I found only gen stuff at first and I thought it was so cool--and then I found m/m stories featuring my fav characters, at the time and thought I'd landed in paradise! And heck yeah, I read tons of stuff just for the porn. Wallowed in it, what the hey! I remember those days so fondly me--me at the hamster driven PC, mouth open and blushing like a fever victim. Hah! I moved from that fandom by skipping around reading different fandoms, until I read a story in SV that almost knocked me off my seat--a sex pollen kind of story I think. I still love fuck or die stories....
Now that I'm deeply into SpN, I tend to stay there, but
In SpN, my only iron clad rule is no John/the boys, though I've read it if the writing is good enough. I love J2 like burning but often times I'll skim through the sex unless it's hot enough to make me sweat. And yeah, it takes a bit more to make me sweat now. Jaded, sigh. :) And this was probably ungodly boring--lol!

And like you I'm jaded--my standard for well-written sex is SO much higher now than it used to be. It also depends a lot on my mood. If I'm reading on my lunch hour at work, I'm a lot more likely to be skimming the sex scenes.
So many sex scenes are pretty formulaic, anyway; I like sex that tells you something about the characters' relationship. But a lot of authors seem to think they're mandatory even if they don't advance the plot; I can think of many a WIP I followed in the past that just turned into lots of self-indulgent sex over and over and over again, with no advancement of the plot. Which can be ok when you're reading serially, because you don't always notice, but when you read it all together--YIKES. Who knew sex could be boring? (There was a Phantom Menace story long ago that was particularly egregious in this regard, so much so that I still remember it 11 years later!)

omgosh, yes--it makes me tired when characters are screwing all over the place without a reason for it. I know I've been guilty of shoveling in a bit of pron to make the readers happy, but I do try to make it work in the story. This one finger-two finger and on to nirvana stuff is annoying and sometimes throws me out of the story. Also...I try to have some understanding of how sex works for guys, oy. The prostate isn't equivalent to the clitoris. I'd do research on that but I doubt Mr. R would be willing to cooperate in any kind of way...*G* Anyway, that's my pet peeve. I really think guys having sex isn't the least like girls having sex. I could be wrong but...anyhoo, that's been bothering me lately. *G* Wow! Thanks for giving me a place to complain!
and you are very welcome!

I'm like that with SV. I'll occasionally read J2 if Michael & Tom are featured (& well-written) but I tend to be more interested in the dialogue between the foursome than the sex.
If I ever do venture properly into SPN, it might be for Dean/Cas...

When I do read fic I can only handle well written sex scenes. One time I read this really long story just to get to the sex scene at the end, and I had to stop reading halfway through the porn because it was so badly written (like, the opposite of hot. I believe there's a fine line between being aroused and being squicked). Weirdly, the writer I'm thinking of is really popular and considered very good, but I thought her writing was godawful, and (therefore) her porn was even worse.

The thing about slash not laying the groundwork, though, is a generational thing. I think the first wave of stories in a fandom always does that, and then after a while it gets old to readers, so it's a step that gets skipped. So maybe you just need to find the earliest writers when you move into a new fandom?
I honestly think a lot of authors get a big following not because they're good writers but because they're prolific.

I'm no slash expert but I'm not sure that's entirely true. I tried reading in Merlin fandom in S1 and it was the same deal: even with first time stories there seems to be an assumption that the boys are basically already in love with each other they just don't know it yet. Which obviously works for most slash fans (and back when I first discovered Clex it worked for me), but if I don't see that in canon then I need to see them actually fall for each other, or develop an attraction to each other, in the story. So basically I wrote the Merlin/Arthur story I wanted to read then fucked off back to Smallville. \o/
