Veronica Mars thoughts behind the cut

My favorite part of this episode was Wallace the sleuth. I really loved that he got to investigate on his own and be successful at it. And if that gets him the hot girl and shows nice guys don't always finish last--I can't complain. I really hope he's going to get more independent story lines this year. I have mixed feelings about the new girl, as I'm sure we're supposed to at this point, but her similarities to Lily are kind of interesting (both bad girl rebels with parent issues).

It's interesting to me that they're still playing Veronica as reluctant detective, just as her dad is reluctant to run for office. Also interesting that in both cases they're brought back by concern over injustice--but I wonder how much longer Vernoica is going to be clinging to the facade of normal? In some ways I like the fact that she is getting to show a broader range of emotion this year, and I think her grief and guilt and vulnerability are perfectly in character--but I do kind of miss the old tough-as-nails Veronica. I wonder if, realistically, that persona will ever return. I somehow expect that part of her grief for the people on the bus is grief for Lily that she never really worked through, and now she has an additional layer of guilt on top of that, which is only going to increase, if the scenes for next week are any indication.

I see that I completely called the Meg death wrong--I thought that would be the factor that drew Veronica into the case, which obviously it won't be since Meg is alive. I'm happy Meg's not dead, though, because I do love the character, and thought it was sad they were killing her off just when she was getting interesting (meaning non-perfect). Of course, the question is, will she wake up soon, or only at the end of the season to finally reveal crucial details about the mystery.

Not much to say about the rest of the episode, except I was trying to figure out if Mr. Casablancas had secretly figured out that Logan was sleeping with his wife, and the gun range thing was a veiled threat, or what. I wonder if Veronica will end up informing on Logan--my guess would be no. I did think it was interesting that both Logan and her dad picked up on the fact that she looked different, though. Is this supposed to suggest that only the people who truly love her see her clearly, or something?
