Flash Finale
Ok, though I loved a lot of the character scenes, the actual plot just pissed me off, so if you don't want to read me ranting quite a bit about that, probably skip this review.
When is changing the past EVER a good idea? SRSLY, PEOPLE. Joe and Iris (and to a certain extent Caitlin and Cisco and Dr. Victor Garber), why the HELL were you humoring Barry about this in any way, shape or form? Hello, it's pretty clear that changing Barry's past is going to have significant and profound effects on the whole timeline--like, what if the particle accelerator accident still happened (which is should have still, probably) and Barry wasn't there to stop all the rampaging bad guys? Which is just one of the ripples that could have happened, and that's BEFORE Dr. Victor Garber pointed out, oh yeah, this event could rip a hole in the fabric of space and time and destroy the city and/or the planet AND BARRY STILL WENT THROUGH WITH IT?
ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?
Ok, he's basically an obsessed kid, but there's no way you can label him a hero when he's willing to risk all of humanity to save a person who's already dead. OH MY FUCKING GOD, the lack of logic in this pissed me off so much.
Which is not to say there weren't things that I loved about this episode. To name a few:
--EDDIE coming through as a true hero and killing himself to save Barry was pretty fucking awesome, though it actually broke my heart, and I somehow hope that whatever it is Barry had to do to fix the singularity is going to make him come back from the dead. Or at least maybe he can join Dr. Victor Garber and his time travel buddies in the new series? Because I really liked him and I was pissed that they only let him get over himself and reunite with Iris because they were going to kill him off. Dammit, they were cute together (and not practically brother-sister).
(Speaking of which, the only potential upside I saw to what I thought was going to be a weird time-travel reset was that they would get rid of the weird quasi-sibling thing between Iris and Barry. Well, that and potentially allowing the real Dr. Harrison Wells to be a character on the show, which would have rocked).
--Joe and Barry's conversation where Barry sincerely regrets that he has to give up a dad to get his mom back broke my heart. If they had killed that relationship which is at the heart of this show with a retcon, I don't know I could have taken it!).I also loved that Joe admitted that parents are basically always faking it.
--Cisco getting to have the weird heart-to-heart with Eobard, and telling him how upset he was that Eobard killed him, and Eobard apologizing not for that but for Cisco becoming affected by the particle accelerator, and saying his future self would be Eobard's gift to him! That was fantastic, and also great foreshadowing. (I also loved Cisco almost not being able to stop himself from asking questions about how the future tech worked).
--Caitlin getting to marry her fellow. And he's not dead! I was sure he'd end up dead or somehow reabsorbed into Dr. Victor Garber after that.
--Barry getting to say goodbye to his mom! (Also, I am choosing that look from future Barry to indicate that he had actually gone through with changing the timeline originally and the outome was worse. Or something. For all we know he's seen multiple timelines, if he's 150 or however old he's supposed to be in the future).
So there were a lot of good character scenes in this, and until Eddie is still dead at the beginning of next season I'm living in denial of his actual death (while admiring his self-sacrifice), but holy CRAP I am pissed at Barry (and all the folks who didn't try to stop him from being INCREDIBLY STUPID).
