Agent Carter 2.3
That was really fun!
1. Yay! I knew Dr. Wilkes wasn't dead! (Or predicted, anyway). I hope they're going to be able to embody him again and he becomes the foundation for SHIELD's science division (which I know will eventually be shady, but dammit, they did some good things too). I guess he could also just work for Stark industries?
2. Speaking of Stark, I am RIDICULOUSLY fond of this Howard Stark, obnoxious womanizer and all. I enjoy the juxtaposition of the eccentric billionaire playing at directing (a comic book movie, even!) and the scientific innovator who wants to revolutionize the industry (and in doing so conveniently makes discoveries about wavelength etc. that will help Wilkes and Peggy). I like how he uses his privilege to help Peggy investigate (while acknowledging that!) AND being a total jackass at the same time. I mean, I'm sure the gaggle of ladies in the all-men's club was Peggy's idea, but he certainly had a lot of fun with it. And the deliberate parallels they're making between his and Tony's quirks--like round-the-clock sciencing and that little shoutout about Jarvis not wanting to be a disembodied voice--are really fun (and the Jarvis one made me LOL). I think what I like best about Howard is that despite everything he does have a good heart, which shows when he's helping Peggy and Wilkes.
3. Ok, Peggy whaling on that heavy bag was not only a nice parallel to Steve, but it was also just about as ridiculously attractive as when Steve does it. Who knew I had a thing for female pugilism? (Or maybe just Peggy beating the hell out things, because the fight that followed was also awesome).
4. Jarvis continues to be completely delightful, whether he's picking up Velveeta and heavy metals for Howard (hee!) or infiltrating secret societies and teaching them how to make speedy martinis, or declining to spar with Peggy but them helping her fight off evil ninjas. And I liked his loyalty to Howard (just like I liked Howard acknowledging that him working for Peggy would be good for Jarvis).
5. I'm really curious whether Thompson is going to overcome his own self-interest now that he knows he's getting played by the CIA guy? (Or is his resentment of Peggy too great? I'm sure that little dig she made about him covering up the truth and expecting medals can't be helping, though damn was that apropos.)
6.Whitney Frost is really an awesome villain. I'm glad they're making her so complex--it's hard to tell exactly how much she's playing her husband (obviously quite a bit, but does she love him at all or is it all her using him?), and her horror at what's happening to her is obvious, though I'm sure everyone was glad when she accidentally sucked the life out of her gropey producer. And it's fascinating to see how much she parallels Peggy, in that she did important work in the war and now is expected to fit into these boxes of star and senator's wife and mother.
I'm really looking forward to the rest of this season! Anyone know how it's doing in the ratings?
