See, I think how you interpret Isagel's story depends a *lot* on when you read it. I can't remember exactly when it came out, but I do remember it was at a time when the rift was clearly starting to take place onscreen (this was *way* before season 4--even in season 3 I remember people seeing signs of it). So in that context, the idea that there was a biological urge tying Clark and Lex together was actually a good thing.
I think sometimes that it would be really interesting to write an essay on how futurefics reflect onscreen canon at the time they were written. For example, Lex in "The Same River" is *so* sympathetic to Clark's needs, and doesn't really blame Clark for the rift between them. I don't think that would be a plausible futurefic with today's Lex, at least not without a *lot* of backstory.
