Oh, yes, I completely agree with you, both that it would be lazy writing and that it would not make sense to the audience intertextually. And really, I wish all TV and movie writers would give up the "abandon someone at the altar" trope, because unless you're trying to deliberately make your heroine look cruel and uncaring, it's stupid.
