That 10 things meme
Since I just friended a whole bunch of new people today, who might be looking at my journal to see who this strange person is, here's 10 things I (don't actually) assume you know about me (but thought you might be interested in anyway), behind the cut:
1. I'm female. Hence my default icon.
2. That default icon of mine is not to express boredom, as some people have presumed--it's my favorite Corot painting, "Interrupted Reading," which I thought was a cool punny name for this journal. And I actually wanted to keep one main icon for me, because I have a hard time keeping track of who's who when I'm skimming lj and all my friends are using their 100 icon allotment to the fullest. Which is not to say that I haven't fantasized about getting a paid account and some fun fannish icons, occasionally, but for now I'm sticking with the beautiful tarot reader with the haunting eyes.
3. I'm a media fan.
4. I'm multifannish, because I never really get over my old fandom loves, which are, roughly in order, Star Trek, X-Files, Forever Knight, Highlander, Xena, Buffy, Angel, Phantom Menace, Due South, Smallville and Veronica Mars (with many side trips elsewhere, but those have been the ones I have obsessed over for at least 2 years at a time), but I tend to focus on one or two fandoms at a time: currently Smallville and Veronica Mars, and occasionally Harry Potter.
5. I'm primarily a slash fan (as you can probably tell, just from the list of fandoms--for about 8 years there I just sort of followed the next big slash thing from fandom to fandom), but I'll also read het, threesomes, etc. as long as I'm interested in the characters. I don't really have OTP's-- favorite couples, sure, but since I obsess hard in different fandoms, I also tend to get bored after a while and want to read around in different pairings.
I have to love a show, too, to be really fannish about it (which is probably why I never really got into Sentinel fandom, despite my love for many individual Jim/Blair stories, and why I seem mainly immune from the SG: Atlantis love that is sucking so many people away from Smallville. I love many SGA stories, but so far am indifferent to the show). In fact, I don't really consider myself fannish about a show unless I can enjoy gen stories in that fandom, because that for me is a sign that I really like the show/universe more than just a particular pairing.
6. I like meta a lot. For me, it makes fandom more fun rather than less fun, though I certainly understand people who are all about the squee. (For me, meta is just a different form of squee). And since I'm not really a fiction writer, I like meta also because it is a place in fandom I feel I can actually contribute.
7. I tend to prefer to lurk rather than speak. I suspect, actually, there are many, many, many folks like me. I don't think this makes them substandard fans--I think these are just the fans you don't know yet. Maybe this is a result of starting fandom on Usenet, where it was much better to be a silent lurker than to post annoying crap; I certainly think that usenet is what leads me to assume that for every person posting to livejournal there are 100 people silently reading, and still feeling very involved in the conversation. Hell, I read livejournal for three years before I even got an account, and I might not even have done that if
rose_emily hadn't decided to flock Omiai.
8. I still have a hard time posting story feedback in comments--it seems too public and performative to me, and I would rather send personal email to authors, where I feel less exposed when talking about my emotional reactions to stories, and where I feel less like I'm competing with the erudition of other commenters. I definitely feel more comfortable sending constructive criticism that way. But I'm trying to train myself to comment more--I think I've been doing better lately.
9. I still love Smallville. I am not just a Clex fan (though I am a huge fan of Clex), I am a Smallville fan: I love the mythology, I love Chloe, I love Lionel, and I can't say that I completely dislike any of the other characters. I'm really enjoying season 5.
10. I think Veronica Mars is simply the best show currently on TV.

Exactly! It's a different form of squee for me too. ;)
Yay for a fellow S5 SV fan!
Veronica Mars started this week in Australia. I will have to check it out.

And definitely watch Veronica Mars--the writing, characterization, and acting are all amazing. And I think it does a great job keeping you invested in the long-term mystery plot while still interested in the week-to-week investigations. And while originally I thought Veronica was almost too similar to Chloe Sullivan (no direct borrowing by Rob Thomas or anything, but eerie similarities), I came to love Veronica for her own complicated, stubborn, brilliant but flawed self.

Good to know about Veronica Mars. I'm feeling ready for some new shows, particularly as the summer season has just started here. Some terrible shite is being flung on our screens, but there appears to be some exciting stuff (like VM) in the mix.

I love Xena and Angel and Buffy. Having being fortunate enough to stop watching Xena after the bizzare resurrection/we are angels/heaven wars debacle, I am untained by the blight of the later seasons. (although I was filled in about them last night and my eyes are still bleeding, so yknow.)
I consider meta to be squee too! I tend not to actually do it myself, I mean, I do a few reviews and what not but mostly I respond to other peoples meta (I find it much easier to discuss a preconceived notion rather than come up with an original thought :p) I can't understand how people couldn't like meta.
I am a Smallville fan first and foremost. I adore the show. I love Clex and it is one of the things that makes the show for me. But I love all the characters and there dynamics (I don't *like* the character of some of the characters, but for what they bring to the show as a whole I love).
I am really enjoying season 5 too. I was miffed at first, because I thought Arrival was terrible, in fact I was furious until Aqua. At which point my love returned and I was happyful again.
Veronica Mars is awesome.
(I promise all my comments aren't this long)

And I'm glad I found your journal, because I like new friends too! And it's fun to see we have several fannish interests, not just Smallville. (I watched Xena to the bitter, bitter end, though I confess the last season or so there are still some episodes I've never seen).
It's funny that your season 5 Smallville love started with Aqua, because that is actually the only episode this season I didn't like--that actor playing Aquaman completely turned me off. But I look forward to hearing what you think about upcoming episodes!
