Well, I gave Mad Men another shot and damn. I may have to watch this show. I didn't realize they were going to be doing both The Man in the Grey Flannel Suit and The Feminine Mystique.
I'm intrigued to find out whether Betty's illness is psychosomatic or something like incipient MS, and at least in her I finally found a character I sympathized with. Actually, I liked Don more, too. They really are doing a fabulous job of conveying how lost these two are, and how confused that they feel so alienated when they think they have everything and should be completely happy. I really loved Betty at the psychiatrist, too: a perfect scene of being alienated by her alienist. And how wonderfully creepy that after he didn't speak a single word to her in that awkward session that he is telling Don everything she says. I'm finding this so much better (and more realistic) than other 60s shows that pile on the nostalgia and ignore the toxic and taken for granted sexism and racism of this era.
Watching Peggy attempt to negotiate the tortured sexual politics of the firm also made her seem a lot more sympathetic to me, too. God, that second scene of a secretary sobbing in the bathroom--now that we have a glimpse of what she's probably crying about--as Peggy tried to remain composed, really killed me.
And OMG, the other period details--like the kids blithely climbing over the front seat of the car while Betty is driving, or the fear engendered when the divorced woman moved into town, or exactly how much people drank and smoked--are absolutely amazing. It really gives you a sense of a totally different culture.
I'm continuing to love Burn Notice while continuing not to have much, concretely, to say about it except that it's always fun and educational. Now I know what to do the next time I have to make fake C4!
In completely unrelated news, what do people think about the fact that Zachary Quinto has been cast to play young Spock? I know the 3 or 4 ZQ fans on my flist are probably happy, but I just don't know if I'm going to be able to separate him from the Sylar role (which I do think he is quite good in) and actually see him as Spock. But Leonard Nimoy was probably my first celebrity crush, so I don't know if I would have been happy with anyone, honestly.

ARGH, I hate when niche media caters to not-fen just to enhance profit - it never works out well, does it? Instead fen have to sit through excruciating exposition and … ok, too early to be ranting, seeing as they don't even have the final script yet, *takes deep breath*.
