Older J2 recs

I made this rec list about six months ago for a RL friend I was trying to entice into SPN fandom, and since then I have emailed it to several people, and I finally decided to just post these and point people to them rather having to cut and paste all the time. Most of these are pretty classic, so if you've been in the fandom at all you've probably read them.

"If it wasn't for you meddling kids": Extremely silly yet very fun story in which, it turns out, most of the actors in Hollywood are secretly superheroes. Including Jared and Jensen. Jared kind of has a crush on Jensen, but he's also falling for a mysterious superhero who doesn't talk--how can he ever choose between them? (Anyone familiar with romance tropes of course knows the solution to this). http://trollprincess.livejournal.com/1346252.html

"Something Borrowed, Something Blue." I have a totally shameful fixation on this story, which is based on some movie I've never seen. Jared needs an escort for his brother's wedding, since it turns out his ex is going to be the best man, and he has to prove he's moved on. But he hasn't, really, so he hires Jensen from an escort service--but ends up falling for him. http://belyste.livejournal.com/19534.html

"Off the Script": Jensen has been the top porn star for a decade, but he's getting a little old for the business, and a little jaded. Jared is the enthusiastic new big thing (literally speaking), but Jensen is not, at first, excited about working with him. Jared eventually changes his mind. http://jasmasson.livejournal.com/44199.html

"Waiting for my real life to begin": Jared is a freshman who has a string of really horrible roommates before he finally ends up assigned to Jensen. Jared still thinks he's straight--in fact, he's trying to date Sandy--but Jensen has this habit of giving people blowjobs when he's drunk, and after that things follow their natural course. http://sneaky-sena.livejournal.com/8103.html

"Can't point the way to your heart": A take-off of "Hitch;" Jensen is a matchmaker who is trying to set up Jared with his perfect girl, but ends up falling for Jared instead. http://belyste.livejournal.com/15726.html

"Business and pleasure": Part of the Supernatural Harlequin challenge: Jared is a successful CEO but a total slut who has the bad habit of making headlines with his sexual peccadilloes. He needs to prove to his board of directors he can be stable and mature, and so he proposes a fake relationship with his assistant, Jensen, who is of course totally in love with him. http://belyste.livejournal.com/6865.html

"The Jared Padalecki Untitled Project": Jared and Jensen had a brief relationship during the run of Supernatural, but it ended badly. Now Jared is a huge name in Hollywood, while Jensen's career is in the toilet. When Jared offers Jensen a part in his new film, he doesn't want to take it, but can't turn down the money. But can they work together, and what will it mean to their unsolved issues? http://esohpe.livejournal.com/14570.html#cutid1 [Note: this links to part one of the story. I think all the parts are internally linked, but in case one part isn't, go here: http://esohpe.livejournal.com/tag/jared+padalecki+untitled+project --this has the links to all the parts of the story, though in reverse order.] (Warning: Britishisms)

"Monogatari": the one where they are samurai. This is not just an alternate version of Jared & Jensen, it's an alternate world where big chunks of America are a Japanese colony. It's long, plotty, and really sucks you in. I put off reading this for a long time, even though it was highly recommended, because it seemed like such a strange premise, but when I finally sat down to read it I couldn't put it down. Jensen has to train Jared in the ways of the samurai (which of course involves a sexual relationship), but then they both get caught up in the extremely complicated politics of the empire. http://danny.talkoncorners.net/mg/mgtitle.html

"Last stop: Chicagoland." Set in the future: Jensen and Jared are in an established relationship with two kids, but they are encountering problems due to conflicting career goals and the challenges of raising a family while juggling careers. http://phaballa.livejournal.com/298771.html

"The language of waves and radiation, or how the dead speak to the living." Post-apocalyptic J2 Au (really!) In the aftermath of the avian flu epidemic, Jared and Jensen have to survive exile in Canada, and end up starting a resistance movement. This story is told in an interesting style--Jensen and Jared's stories interspersed with "U.N. field reports" http://community.livejournal.com/thistogether/18779.html [Note: Link currently dead, but I can't find another place the story is posted]

"Have you seen him who my soul loves": I actually have some issues with the depiction of Catholicism in this, and it's a bit over-the-top angsty in sections, but on the other hand: Jensen as a priest, falling for Jared, who he's doing premarital counseling with. Very popular with folks who have any kind of priest kink. http://veronamay.livejournal.com/624826.html

Shorter stories:

"Inconceriously": Jensen auditioned for Sam before he got the role of Dean, and has some definite ideas about what Sam would be like in bed that he likes to share with Jared. http://monkiedude.livejournal.com/56135.html

"Whatever Makes Him Happy": The author calls this schmoopy kink. Jared and Jensen have been fucking for a while before Jared figures out Jensen is looking for a D/S relationship. http://felisblanco.livejournal.com/614144.html

"Jared, Jensen, and Jared's Enormous Wang: A Miraculous and Uplifting Tale for the Ages" According to internet sources, Jared's "wang" is the size of South America. Jensen wants an opportunity to find out. This is pretty hilarious. http://ifyouweremine.livejournal.com/108368.html

"In which Jared makes a realization and Jensen isn't nice": Jared's first thought on meeting Jensen was that he was porn on legs, but that was before he got to know him and realize what a nice guy he was. Not, he would have thought, the kind of guy to have nasty sex in a bathroom in Heathrow airport. Luckily, it turns out, he was wrong about that. http://veronamay.livejournal.com/405353.html

"Talk to the Hand." Pretty much pure PWP: Jensen makes the mistake of saying that Jared is no good at talking dirty. Jared demonstrates otherwise. http://stephanometra.livejournal.com/285082.html

Also for anyone reading Monogatari, the Credits & Extras section has spoiler-free galleries and a glossary that might be helpful. (I know that I was thinking in the first few paragraphs of the Prologue, "What this really needs is a map," and I didn't realize that there actually was one. I didn't realize there was a glossary, either, so it is comprehensible without it.)

Thanks--I finally got around to correcting this.

Boo! The site for "the language of waves and radiation (or, how the dead speak to the living)" is down for the time being.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2008-09-11 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm. You might want to actually email the author for that one--looking around, it doesn't look like she has that posted anywhere else, and her personal LJ doesn't make it sound like she's too active in J2 fandom these days. And unfortunately because it was posted in parts the google cache only gets the introduction.

People asked about it, and she said on 8/18 that she doesn't have it all in one document and it's offline until her domain is back up.

Thanks. Wow, that was completely the wrong link, wasn't it?

I see you are *rapidly* running out of stories. Oh dear! Here's a slightly longer story by [livejournal.com profile] trollprincess in which Jared is a gossip columnist (well, gossip webmaster/minor tv personality) and Jensen is a big closeted action star: http://trollprincess.livejournal.com/1621600.html

I am running out! And that's with a detour to read through all of [livejournal.com profile] notthequiettype's J2 fic. (Some of it is just good fun. And some of it has some serious sharp edges. And the one with Sandy is seriously hot.)

Okay, that was fun. It's kind of more the Jared from the Domino's story. I wanted more of them getting to know each other (because I can't stand the falling in love without it and without any kind of wham! this is it moment). Interesting to see the "can't give you up" thing again. Is this another SPN bleed-through? Or just a "when there's a tough choice, choose the boyfriend" thing?

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2008-09-12 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought the "can't give you up" thing was just a general romance trope?

I agree Jared's voice is very similar to the Dominoes story, though he's a lot less innocent in this piece.

Hey, we never decided where and when to have lunch Sunday. Nature's Own closed down, I don't know if you heard, so our traditional place is out. Any ideas? Downtown would be preferable for me since the bus doesn't run on Sundays.

[personal profile] rsadelle 2008-09-12 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm. Maybe. I was just surprised to find it in almost the exact same terms in more than one place.

Much less innocent. Downright dirty, even!

I didn't know they'd closed. That's too bad. And the Thai place next door isn't open for lunch on the weekends (which is just silly). Downtown works for me, and I'm not that picky. Anywhere you want to go?

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2008-09-12 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm. My suggestion was going to be Thai. Ok, how about Upper Crust?
rsadelle: (Default)

[personal profile] rsadelle 2008-09-12 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, so I am kind of picky. I love their food, but my cousin worked there for a while and now I know too much about their horrible labor practices, and now I have an ethical issue with going there. (Especially since my writing group might start having meetings there; I really don't want to give them any additional business above that.) Anywhere else you want to go? (I promise to try to be less picky!)

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2008-09-12 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope, you vetoed, so you get to suggest the next place.

Tres Hombres?

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2008-09-12 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Their food always gives me indigestion. Hmm, I'm running out of places I regularly eat downtown. Is there actual food at Teaz Me, or is it all just froo froo drinks?
rsadelle: (Default)

[personal profile] rsadelle 2008-09-12 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Unless they've changed drastically since the last time I was there, they do have food. It's a pretty limited menu - your choices are basically a tofu wrap or bowl (with options about couscous/rice and kind of dressing) - but it's really good.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2008-09-12 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm. I think I want a little more choice. How about the place that used to be Jascos? (I have no idea what it's called these days, but it's above the downtown Jon n Bons).
rsadelle: (Default)

[personal profile] rsadelle 2008-09-12 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee! It's now Broadway Heights, but everyone I know calls it "the place that used to be Jasco's." Works for me! What time?

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2008-09-12 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
How early do you usually eat lunch? I get up late on Sundays, so 1 is good for me, but I could do earlier if you want.
rsadelle: (Default)

[personal profile] rsadelle 2008-09-12 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
1 works for me. I'll see you then!
