Since a couple people asked, here is the best part of The Daily Show last night (via Comedy Central's webpage), as well as a link to the whole episode (via Hulu).
And if anyone else was as infuriated by Sarah Palin's convention speech as I was, here's a good critique of her candidacy by Gloria Steinem.
"Palin's value to those patriarchs is clear: She opposes just about every issue that women support by a majority or plurality. She believes that creationism should be taught in public schools but disbelieves global warming; she opposes gun control but supports government control of women's wombs; she opposes stem cell research but approves "abstinence-only" programs, which increase unwanted births, sexually transmitted diseases and abortions; she tried to use taxpayers' millions for a state program to shoot wolves from the air but didn't spend enough money to fix a state school system with the lowest high-school graduation rate in the nation; she runs with a candidate who opposes the Fair Pay Act but supports $500 million in subsidies for a natural gas pipeline across Alaska; she supports drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve, though even McCain has opted for the lesser evil of offshore drilling. She is Phyllis Schlafly, only younger.
I don't doubt her sincerity. As a lifetime member of the National Rifle Assn., she doesn't just support killing animals from helicopters, she does it herself. She doesn't just talk about increasing the use of fossil fuels but puts a coal-burning power plant in her own small town. She doesn't just echo McCain's pledge to criminalize abortion by overturning Roe vs. Wade, she says that if one of her daughters were impregnated by rape or incest, she should bear the child. She not only opposes reproductive freedom as a human right but implies that it dictates abortion, without saying that it also protects the right to have a child."
I had to make myself stop reading commentary on her speech because steam was coming out of my ears. Fortunately, I found a good piece of fannish stress relief: a ten-minute vid of Jensen Ackles kissing people .

Favorite quotes from this:
"[M]y dad is a community organizer, so lemme spell this out: the difference between a community organizer and a politician is that a community organizer can’t tell anyone what to do. They have to listen. So they can’t order books banned from a library to indulge their own religious sensibilities. They can’t fire someone because they didn’t follow orders to fire an estranged family member. They can’t ram through a $15 million dollar sports complex that leaves their local town groaning underneath the debt. Unlike politicians, they don’t have any power other than the power of people who want to see something changed."
"Mrs. Palin needs to be reminded that Jesus Christ was a community organizer and Pontius Pilate was a governor."

Just like you, The Daily Show was the only thing that made it at all tolerable.
(and as if I didn't need another reason to respect Steinem, she is also Christian Bale's step mother. :) )

Seriously? I had no idea!
I don't think I would have survived the last 8 years without Jon Stewart.

And yes. She married his father (who sadly passed away in 2003.)

The article by Gloria Steinem was also fantastic, Nora. I agree wholeheartedly with every word.

I will put it simply...a few weeks ago, I was undecided when it came to the upcoming election. McCain's recent choice for VP made me 100% positive of whom I will be voting for, and here's a hint...its not him.

I used to have a lot of respect for McCain, but this VP choice has pretty much eliminated that.
