Harper's Island

--Katie Cassidy is about 100 times hotter with dark hair than she was as a blonde. And, frankly, a better actor than I thought she was when she was playing Ruby.
--Christopher Gorham and Elaine Cassidy are also quite easy on the eyes and I'm finding their characters enjoyable to watch. I assume they're going to be the last 2 standing and end up hooking up, though only my history of watching genre television leads me to this prediction, not any spoilers.
--This is a pretty, pretty cast, isn't it? And seems to include just about every Vancouver-based actor ever. I mean, in addition to Katie Cassidy and Jim Beaver and Richard Burgi, I had no idea, for example, that Gina Holden (who I LOVE) was in this. Of course, she always seems to be killed off in everything I like her in (Patricia Swann, I still wish they hadn't killed you off), and she has the creepy daughter who's seeing ghosts, so I predict she'll only last a couple episodes at best.
--I was beginning to think that we weren't even going to get to see Jim Beaver in this episode (and he's the main reason I tuned in), though I'm glad he finally showed up. Though OUCH, that was a painful scene with his daughter.
--I guessed that Harry Hamlin's character was going to buy it this epsiode just because he's probably the most expensive actor in the cast (other than Chris Gorham, who is obviously the lead).
--I'm not tremendously interested in the murder plot at the moment, but the scenery is lovely and the characters are interesting enough that I'll at least tune in next week. My Thursday nights are already pretty crowded, though; it's going to have to really hook me for me to keep watching when SV, SPN and Greys come back.

And that is what DVRs are for.

I watched for the cast, the murder plot is starting to get there. I think it will pick up when people start realizing that there are murders going on.

One comment though...

I'm with you on the last 2 standing, given the set up. But my love of mysteries makes me wonder if they really will. The moment I heard about the plot, I immediately thought of Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None which put an interesting twist on the last 2 standing. And I won't spoil that ending unless you've read it.

The one play I was in in high school was based on that Christie novel, but I honestly don't remember the ending--but I certainly don't care about being spoiled!

As for DVRs--hah. I am still in the VCR stage, and my problem is that if I taped Harper's Island I would have to wait to watch SPN until 11 on Thursday nights, which I know is just not going to happen. So I suspect it will get dumped, though I also expect CBS might be posting eps on their website, so if I get really into it I'll watch it that way.

Spoiler alert for And Then There Were None...

[personal profile] lycanthrophile 2009-04-10 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
Quick synopsis

10 people were invited to an isolated island and systematically murdered. All had committed a murder either directly or indirectly. Last 2 standing were the couple showing the most sexual tension. Girl killed guy and then committed suicide after being psychologically nudged into it by a seeing a hangman's noose that wasn't there when she left the house five minutes before.

The real murderer faked his death about five murders back and had been still picking off people.

I still suggest you read it because it is a good psychological thriller.

Oh, I've read all of Christie, long long ago, but those sort of mysteries really aren't my cup of tea anymore.

Are you sure Harry Hamlin's character is dead? When I watch tv mysteries, a flag goes up if there's a 'big name' actor in what seems like a bit part. Usually that actor is the villain.

ETA - Though I'm not sure how much of a big name actor Harry Hamlin is anymore.

Oh, sure, there's no guarantee he's dead--but like I said, the murder mystery plot is not actually what I'm watching the show for at the moment, so if he turns out not to really be dead I won't be too upset.

I'm about fifteen minutes in (and I was thinking I was at least halfway through) and so far: eh, but, yes, pretty. I didn't even recognize Katie Cassidy! Christopher Gorham was in Popular. Did you ever watch it? It was ridiculous and awesome, and very femslashy.

My guess is that Elaine Cassidy will hook up with the fish guy, unless he dies in this ep.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2009-04-10 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, I think the Elaine/fish guy pairing is too obvious, but I may be overthinking the complexity of genre tv. :-)

And no, I never saw Popular.

Hee! Maybe. We'll have to see.

Oh, it was hilariously awesome. Carly Pope was Sam, the nerdy but still traditionally pretty girl, and Leslie Bibb was Brooke, the cheerleader popular girl. Then Sam's mom and Brooke's dad get married and they have to learn to live with each other. (This is entirely femslashy.) Christopher Gorham, Sara Rue, and Tamara Mello were Sam's friends. Tammy Lynn Michaels (who is now Melissa Etheridge's partner) and Leslie Grossman were Brooke's best friends. Brooke's boyfriend was also slashy with Christopher Gorham's character Harrison, and maybe with one of his friends (I can't remember the details well enough to remember). Plus, Diane Delano was in it being amazing, Delta Burke had a recurring role as Mary Cherry's mother (Leslie Grossman was Mary Cherry), Wentworth Miller showed up as a bitchy cheerleader for two episodes, they had an ep where the shop teacher was going through a sex change, and Harrison's mom was a lesbian. And it was all done in such a way that you knew they knew it was over the top.

Oh, now that you describe it, I think I did see a couple episodes, because I remember Mary Cherry, though I don't really remember anything else about the show. I know most recently Christopher Gorham was on Ugly Betty, which is on my list of shows to watch someday, but since it's on Thursdays there's no way I'll ever watch it live.

Anything that realizes it's absurd, gets bonus points from me.

He was on Ugly Betty. I watched some of his eps. (I did not start from the beginning, so it's the kind of show you can just drop into.)

Hmm. And now that I've watched the whole ep: eh. It would be best if Wakefield never committed the murders and the real murderer has been hanging around all this time.

Also: Jim Beaver does such a nice father figure.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2009-04-10 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I love Jim Beaver as a dad. Though I also find him strangely hot, in a beat-up redneck kind of way.

I totally believe Wakefield either (a) wasn't the real murderer or (b) isn't actually dead.

I would love it if he weren't the real murderer. It would be extra awesome if Abby somehow turned out to be the murderer - or even Jim Beaver.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2009-04-10 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Jim Beaver is a great suspect, because one of the victims was his wife and he's the sheriff who supposedly killed the bad guy. If I was reading this as a mystery novel, he's totally the one I'd suspect first.
rsadelle: (Default)

[personal profile] rsadelle 2009-04-10 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee! Yeah. He's above suspicion because he's the sheriff, which is why he's so suspicious.

I'm not particularly interested in Lead Girl, but I think you're right that she and Groom will be the last ones standing. I think KC will stick around for a while too, but I can see her being one of the last few ones to bite it.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2009-04-10 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I agree that KC is going to be around for a while. Though I wonder if lychanthrophile's theory above is correct and no one will actually make it out alive.
