SPN: When the Levee Breaks
Oh, my heart. Oh boys .
I wasn't sure I had anything concrete to say beyond that, but further musings and reading a few other people's reviews have made me want to add to that a bit, mostly in epistolary form.
1. Dear Castiel: you can take this as your official Dear John letter from me. We are SO done, at least canonically speaking (though I may still mess around with the fanonical version of you in certain series I'm following). Because I don't care how many times they waterboarded you in heaven; setting a trap for someone who saved your fucking life is NOT ON. (Goodbye, Anna! Nice knowing you!) And that's not even mentioning the way you got Dean to swear allegiance (which I suspect is going to return to bite him on the ass) to save Sam from going all demonic at the same time you were planning to release Sam so he could get his demon on. I will never be convinced that you angels are on the side of right and goodness now, you treacherous bastard.
2. Dear Dean: Oh, baby. I know you're trying to do the right thing for Sam, though I have to say that like Bobby I sometimes question your priorities (is it better to let the whole world go to hell to save your brother's soul?) I like the fact that you don't want him to turn into a monster, but here's a tip: actually calling him a monster? Even in the heat of argument? Might become a self-fulfilling prophecy. And I thought Sam was supposed to be the John-like one these days, so you really need to stop with the empty threats. You know Sam takes those kind of things to heart.
Still, I give you props for not trusting the angels, and for semi-weaselling out of the literal vow (though I'm not sure substituting "and you guys" for "and his angels" is going to change much, and yeah, you didn't always swiftly and obediently follow John's orders, so maybe you have a little wiggle room there, but I fear this vow is going to come back and bite you on the ass. Perhaps it will get you possessed by an angel at an otherwise critical moment, or something like that. Bobby's evaluation of this seemed entirely correct to me.
I do love the fact that you are starting to convince yourself that you can be the one to stop the apocalypse, though.
3. Dear Sam: Your subconscious is a scary, scary place, and I don't know whether I find your fears (the visitation from Alistair, the Dean who calls you a monster) or your fantasies (that weirdly supportive version of your mom) more frightening. But your inner child certainly kicks ass.
3a. Dear Colin Ford: You rock like a rocking thing, and I could watch a whole series about you playing baby Sammy. I think your scenes were the best part of this episode, hands down. But now I must get back to Sam.
Sam, continuing: your self-jusitifications are powerful enough that I still can't decide if you're ultimately right in your arguments or not. The weight of every foreshadowy episode this season suggests you're gonna go evil, and the obvious parallels between Castiel and Ruby suggest hidden agendas that will not be good for you, and yet I still find your arguments compelling. I especially loved that you still kept trying to persuade Dean to hunt down Lilith with you, right up until he called you a monster for real.
Choking him when he was down, though? Not on, Sam, not on.
4. Dear Sam n' Dean: If you don't kiss and make up somehow in the next episode, I'm going to spend the whole summer sobbing into my pillow.
5. Dear Bobby: You are entirely made of win and awesome, and if they kill you off I will cry and cry and cry. Favorite moment: "You willingly signed up to be the angels' bitch?" Second favorite moment: the standoff with Sam as Sam is trying to escape. Third favorite moment: you threatening to kill Rufus if he ever calls back. Fourth favorite moment: trying to talk sense into Dean, over and over throughout the episode.
6. Dear Ruby: I actually liked this incarnation of you better than the majority of fandom, but I would say the odds of you surviving past the next episode are hovering at about 1%. It was nice knowing you! I hope we at least get confirmation of whether you were really on Sam's side or only after your own agenda before your almost inevitable death.
7. Dear Kripke: You realize that the fangirls are all going to rise up, storm Vancouver (or LA, wherever it is you're hiding out) and FLAY YOU ALIVE if you stretch this cliffhanger out over the summer, right? So I really hope whatever the cliffhanger of the year is, it doesn't leave Sam and Dean at odds for the whole of hiatus. I'm just sayin'.

Did it strike anyone else that the episode was sort of--shoddily written? I mean, "If I do this, Sammy doesn't have to..."/"I'd die for him" versus "You monster"/"Don't come back"? I feel that Dean as a brother is getting screwed around to push the storyline where the writers want it to go.
Ho-hum.
I personally will totally er, write letters to Vancouver. Flaying alive letters. Or something.

Or Ruby herself is "Lucifer's first"? I mean, how creepy was her little smile at, "She's older than she looks"? YOU'RE OLDER THAN YOU LOOK, RUBY.
I've been wondering for a while if Ruby was really Lilith, and that she's been playing Sam all along.
I could buy the different emotional extremes Dean was exhibiting in the episode, though, because in both cases Dean was basically trying to control Sam's behavior; he just had different amounts of power to do so in the 2 scenes.

Oh, that's a very cool idea! I did think perhaps killing Lilith was the last seal, but I hadn't thought about Dean and Sam as the Alpha and Omega, so to speak, before. And a post-apocalyptic landscape for season 5 would certainly be an interesting one.

I have to say, nothing shocked me more than Sam choking Dean, it was like--the big break. Dean almost looked like he was going to just go with it. And then he parrots his dad as Sam goes to leave. Poor Sam. Cursed and despised by family. I love Dean a lot, in all kinds of ways but last night, I kind of thought he was a bit of a doinky. I get he's hurting but man--he hit every switch he could to turn Sam "evil". And yet, he does seem to know him. What the heck, Dean?
It's going to be a longazz summer.

GOOD. I want the sides to be ambiguous! And Dean telling Sam the same thing his dad did? OUCH.
Also, as much as I hated the sex scene in "I Know What You Did Last Summer," I thought Sam sliding down Ruby's body was incredibly sexy. (Although I had a problem with the moment before where they were apparently the same height. What?)
Am I the only one who thinks the wonky camerawork in the hotel room (it's mostly Sam who looks fisheyed, but there's one shot of Dean that's off too) means something?

I've quit watching the show by now, but what I thought when I read about "Lucifer's first" was the seals. And Dean would be Lucifer's first in that sense. I'm totally wrong (lol, I should probably read transcripts), but I like the idea.
