SPN recs

Ooh, Bigbang is here! Yay! I'm not going to have time to do bigbang recs every single day, but since I took the day off (bad sinus headache), I had lots of time to read today. Just because my comments got long,

Reap the Whirlwind (Sam/Jess, Dean/Jo, though the relationships are not the focus of the story). I wasn't sure about this one at first, because not only is it very AU but it's a sequel to something I haven't read. The author's summary made it fairly easy to follow, though, and the AU premise is a very interesting one: Samuel Grey was once Sam WInchester, before a government agency in charge of psychics took him away from his family at the age of 12. This agency trains psychics to control their powers for the good of society, but if they can't learn control they are put to death. Sam, a dreamwalker, managed to survive the experience, and is now in his late 30s, a practicing psychologist married to Jess. (No YED in this AU). He spent most of his life thinking his family abandoned him, but last year found out differently under tragic circumstances. Now a case of disturbed psychic children has brought him back to the Psi Project, even though it's the last place he wants to be, and he needs his brother's help to deal with vengeful spirits.

This is mostly a gen casefile-type story, well-plotted and engaging, with some brief Dean/Jo and Sam/Jess relationship stuff. I didn't really expect to enjoy it, but I did; I think the best part of the story is the complicated ethical stuff about what to do with psychic children who are a danger to others.

We Flow Together , a J2 AU by [livejournal.com profile] balefully, which by itself is enough of a recommendation for me. This particular AU is somewhat based on Splash--Jared is a merman. I've never seen Splash (I know! A shocking admission for someone who grew up in the 80s), so I have no idea how much or little this conforms to that plotline, though I guarantee it has about 40 times more porn. I was initially a little put off by the fact that the story is in present tense, though I really loved the dream-like tone of Jensen's first encounter with Jared when he is 8. Then we flash forward to the future, where futureJensen the player who never sleeps with a guy twice in a row until he encounters a mysterious guy who rescues him from drowning.

I do love "fish out of water" stories (forgive me, I can't resist bad puns), and watching Jared negotiate this new world (and learning English via porn) is pretty fun. (Honestly, though, it made some of the sex a little raunchy for me). All-in-all, this is a wonderfully romantic love story with a ton of porn.

The incestuous courtship of the antichrist's bride by [livejournal.com profile] fleshflutter (Sam/Dean) is pretty much the most hilarious SPN story I've ever read. Crack, as the author says, but delicious, side-splittingly funny crack with a side of HAWT. Sam is becoming the antichrist to save the world, but trying to pick out the least evil way to do it, guided by one of Kerouac's lesser known works. Unfortunately that sort of means he has to marry Dean.

This story is full of completely hilarious and absurd bits like this: The Brotherhood of the Stolen Eyes was the first church to spring up in Sam's name. It's since been followed by the Cult of the Shadow King and the Order of Lost Souls, the latter being a splinter group of the Brotherhood, created to accommodate the worshipping needs of those who already had World of Warcraft on Tuesday evenings

Also, it has angels and demons arguing over who gets to be Batman, and whether or not the Comedian looks like John Winchester. Seriously, this is one of the best stories I've read in a really long time.
