Some belated bigbang recs

Well, I said I'd been reading like a madwoman, right? So I'm starting to catch up, and can finally get back to recommending stories.

The one where bad things happen to Sam and Dean (and seriously, this is NOT A HAPPY STORY)

Ten Thousand Miles by [livejournal.com profile] mimblexwimble
(Gen). This is probably the saddest Supernatural story I've ever read. One day, mid-season 3 (just after Christmas), Sam walks out of the motel and never returns. The story--which is gorgeously written--is all about Dean's attempts to find him, and later, to make sense of his loss. Achingly beautiful and intensely painful--I recommend this, but not if you're feeling emotionally fragile.

The ones where bad things happen to little kids (in order from most to least traumatizing) :

We were here (Mostly gen, though definite Jared/Jensen overtones; also, mainly non-explicit child prostitution). A heartbreaking and fairly realistic look at Jensen and Jared (who are maybe 15 and 11 in this?) trying to survive on the streets, and getting rescued but not really trusting it. Really excellent characterizations of Jensen and Jared.

The Lights of Home by [livejournal.com profile] maychorian. (Gen) Castiel sends Sam and Dean to a little town in Indiana where they spent a summer when they were 7 and 11. Great flashbacks to their childhood (with my favorite version of John Winchester--someone who is trying to be a good parent but failing badly), and the story features Dean dealing with monsters of both the ordinary and the supernatural variety. Warning: childhood sexual abuse (though not incest, and not tremendously explicit).

Speaking for the Dead by [livejournal.com profile] jade1459 (Sam/Dean). The author's summary makes this sound like it's all about necromancy, but as far as I'm concerned that's just a giant McGuffin to maneuver Dean into a situation where he has to take custody of a severely traumatized kid and make her his own, while dealing with Sam's insecurities about the situation and some supernatural problems. Dean + kids= my favorite kind of story, so I loved this.

The Hapless Soldier's Sigh by [livejournal.com profile] bad_peppermint (Gen, weechesters). A nice casefile set when Sam is five and Dean is nine: something is killing children and leaving behind only their teeth. I like this John Winchester characterization; he clearly loves his sons, but is pretty driven by the hunt. Also features a pretty amazing nine-year-old Dean.

And now, some really really schmoopy J2 stuff if you need to recover emotionally from the above stories

A Place in this World by [livejournal.com profile] elless18. (Jared/Jensen) This is a sweet, fluffy cuddly puppy of a story, with no conflict to speak of--just Jensen, a very introverted writer, slowly forming a relationship with Jared and his five-year-old daughter. Lovely schmoop, and the perfect antidote to all those traumatized kid stories.

Winchester and Colt by [livejournal.com profile] raths_kitten (Jared/Jensen). I loved this to pieces; it's basically the J's as Batman and Robin. Jensen Ackles is a wealthy businessman who fights crime by night as the vigilante Winchester; Jared is his sweet and naive office assistant who also wants to be a crimefighter. Excellent banter, and I'm a complete sucker for the gruff hero who doesn't really want a sidekick but can't help liking the cute eager young aspirant.

A Complicated Love and Affection between 2 men by [livejournal.com profile] aleia. I've read quite a lot of reality show AUs, but this one was just fun: Jared is seeking a new best friend; Chris and Steve sign an unwitting Jensen up for his reality show. I especially loved Jensen's relationship with Michael Rosenbaum in this (Roxy and others who care about such things: both Mike and Tom are awesome in this).

To Teach the Human Heart the Knowledge of Itself (Jared/Jensen) by [livejournal.com profile] apreludetoanend
Jensen has been doing community theater for 7 years; Jared is new. They get off on the wrong foot, but soon grow closer. I really loved the rest of the cast in this--it features a great Sophia, Chad, Michael Rosenbaum and Jeff Morgan; I also really enjoyed the behind-the-scenes theater stuff, and the romance was sweet.

Suburban Cape Cod Blues (You Can Find Anything at Walmart) by [livejournal.com profile] sophie_448 (Jared/Jensen).
Jensen is a closeted country singer who's hiding out in Massachusetts after he was outed in the tabloids; Jared teaches Queer Studies and works with the LGBT student group at a local college. They have immediate chemistry, but Jensen doesn't know if he can handle someone who's "professionally gay" when his career depends on making people forget the scandal. This was terrific; I absolutely adored Jared in this, and great use of Chris and Chad as supporting characters.

OKOKOK... So... you've kind of got me reading WAY more j2 than I ever ever thought I would ever read. And, you know what? I thank you :-)

I thought, too, I'd leave you with a rec for a change. I've been beta-ing this one for a while, and it finally got posted today :-). I love it, and I think you will, too. It's a J2 long story where Jensen is an out-of-work soap star and Jared is a painter on a public access station (think: Bob Ross, if you ever watched him). Anyway... it's funny and sweet and just so so cute. So, if you wanna read it go here (http://community.livejournal.com/berryliciousfic/504.html).

Thanks, that was adorable. Jared as Bob Ross--hee hee hee!
