J2 and SPN recs

Here are a few more J2 and SPN recs, mostly of the bigbang variety:

A couple J2 stories I liked mainly for the worldbuilding:

Let Us In by [livejournal.com profile] standing_fic (Jared/Jensen). To be honest, I like this story more for the setting than for the romance: Jensen is a mental health counselor working at a residential facility, and Jared is his new trainee. This does a great job presenting the chaotic but interesting world of mental health, and the struggle of balancing patient needs with bureaucracy. It's not that I didn't enjoy the romance--at least for once the conflict was quite realistic, and not something easily smoothed over--but I liked the other aspects of the story more.

The Chapterhouse by [livejournal.com profile] essene (Jared/Jensen). Really interesting worldbuilding in this one; Jensen and Jared both belong to an order of Knights that's something like monastic Templars in space, only with more sex. I was particularly intrigued by the religion, and I also thought she did interesting things with the Pedagogue/Postulant relationship.

A couple really amazing SPN AUs:

THe End of Walls, The End of Ropes by [livejournal.com profile] july_july_july (Gen, mainly, with some OFC/OMC)
You might think that a gen story set in the Samuel Colt era centering around an OFC character is not what you're reading SPN fic for--but if you did you'd be passing up one of the most interesting OFCs ever. Jezebel is a psychic whose visions of the future stretch into the time of the Winchester family, and she's desperately trying to keep certain visions from coming to pass, all the while trying to survive her own life in the era of the Mexican-American war. Also, the writing in this is really terrific.

One Uncontrollable Hunger Away from Ruin by [livejournal.com profile] maerhys (Sam/Dean, and Sam is sort of 16 in this).
A really engaging double AU: Sam is 32, married to Jess, and living the life of a successful lawyer--except that he slips away to see Dean a few days of the year. But he's unhappy with his life--not just with his uncontrollable migraines, but with his distance from Dean. Then one day he wakes up and he's 16 again, but with all his adult memories intact. Can he get back to his future, or will he choose a different path?

I thought One Uncontrollable Hunger had a really fascinating premise. Sam was especially interesting in that one.

I haven't had time to do much reading lately. :(

Yes, I agree, it had a great Sam.

And it's so easy to get behind on reading--RL has many distractions, especially in the summer.
