Happy-making television

Eastwick is completely made of Velveeta, but it's glorious, glorious cheese. Thank you so much, all you Paul Gross fans who persuaded me to watch. (Please note that my review assumes you know the basic premise of the novel on which this is based, and therefore might be spoilery as to who Paul Gross really is, if you don't know that already).

Yes, every character is a stereotype, and the plot is kind of silly and OTT. But I don't really care, because (A) the cast is gorgeous. Holy hell, Rebecca Romijn has never been hotter, and Paul Gross is really made to play the devil, isn't he? He's simultaneously very creepy and very attractive when he's seducing all of them. (B) The supporting cast is full of "hey, it's that guy" (like Matt Dallas from XY playing Roxie's nearly-jailbait boyfriend, or Sara Rue as Joanna's best friend), which is amusing me. And (C) it's beautifully shot--it makes me want to hop on a plane to New England.

I'm just sad that unlike the book, it is unlikely to actually include a foursome, because GUH. Although I'm happy it doesn't seem to have the misogyny of the book, at least so far. And I am really, really loving the sexually charged antagonism between Roxie and the devil. (Ugh--IMDB tells me his name is Darryl, which I really don't like, but that's ok, because I love the character, and Paul Gross is just so much more enjoyable to watch playing this role than Jack Nicolson was).

I like all of the female characters, including Roxie's daughter and Joanna's best friend; Will and Roxie's boyfriend are also appealing to me; and god, Paul Gross could totally get me to sell my soul. How does he make smug and smarmy so damn appealing?

So I'll probably keep watching this one for a while. Until it inevitably gets cancelled in 6 weeks. That's ok, though, 6 weeks may prove sufficient--I expect it to be a calcium-filled six weeks.

I also really enjoyed Glee this week. The whole Kurt storyline just filled me with joy, from his opening dance number (which showed me it is possible to collapse with laughter while shaking your groove thing, because that song always makes me dance) to his quick thinking with his dad, to actually *making* the football team and actually coming up with a winning strategy. And I have to confess, I teared up when he came out to his dad and his dad was so accepting. Oh, KURT.

And the pregnancy storyline has so many intriguing plot possibilities (somehow I don't think Terri is going to easily be able to solve her no baby problem by taking that one) that I am enjoying it a lot more than I expected to.

Plus, the whole Sue Sylvester plotline as always just completely cracked me up. Pro-caning editorials? Oh, SUE. Plus that anti-embolism ad she caught the principal in was just too funny for words.

I saw a couple of reviews comparing Paul Gross unfavorably to Nicolson and I was like RLY??? JN only ever plays JN. Paul Gross can actually ACT.

And he's Paul Gross, which just gives him automatic win. (Benton Fraser? due South? The best things ever.)
