Smallville: Lazarus

I had no expectations whatsoever going into this episode, but I COMPLETELY LOVED IT. OMG. Dear people who have abandoned SV, you should really come back for the final season because OMG it was good. Pretty much all squee without analysis beneath the cut.

1. OH LOIS. HOW ARE YOU SO MADE OF AWESOME? I loved that she saved Clark and then hid so he wouldn't know, but my favorite scene had to be in the Planet when she was "looking for her pen." Hee! And the expression on her face in that whole scene. Also, I admire the fact that she refuses to hang around and be a weakness for Clark.

2. OH CLARK, HOW ARE YOU SO GODDAMN AMAZING? I love that he refused to choose between Lois and the people near the Daily Planet, but managed to save them all. (Dear Lex: nyah nyah nyah nyah nyah nyah). I also love that he's embracing his heroic destiny even when Jor-El is being as douchy about it as usual (albeit in unusual ways). And holy crap, his whole conversation with Jonathan--especially the delivery of "I missed you"--made me cry and cry.

3. OH JONATHAN, WHEN THE HELL DID YOU BECOME SO SELF-AWARE? I TAKE IT THE AFTERLIFE HAS BEEN GOOD TO YOU. Wow, recognizing that his own anger helped kill him? Not something I ever expected. And his advice to Clark was so good, I think any animosity I ever had toward him was erased just based on that one scene. And I really loved the symbolism of Clark getting affirmation from his human father. I do think he's right to take a bit of Jor-El's criticism seriously, but I pretty much agreed with everything Jonathan said about Clark being a good man and being able to make choices and correct his mistakes.

4. OH TESS, THANK GOD THEY FIXED YOUR FACE. Those scenes with the Lex clones were really powerful--especially little Alexander. And the fact that she's acting as a mother figure for the little Lex clone is creepily perfect.

5. OH OLLIE, THE TORTURE PORN OF YOU WAS COMPLETELY GRATUITOUS since we couldn't even really see your chest. What was up with that?

6. OH WRITERS, I COMPLETELY COMPLETELY LOVED ALL THE SUBTLE AND OBVIOUS WAYS YOU BROUGHT IN THE MYTHOLOGY AND PAST SEASONS, such as
--finding an effective way to have Lex and Clark have a confrontation. And also TOTALLY raising my hopes that TW will really persuade MR to come back for a few eps.
--Having Lois research the Torch, so we got to see Pete and Lana! (Which made up for how empty the credits were this year--geez!)
--Lois on the cross of superhero-dom. Which is so totally appropriate, now that she's actively helping Clark be a hero and yet personally sacrificing her own desires to do it.
--bringing back Jonathan, which I was spoiled for but not actually anticipating or anything, but damn that was a good scene.

I AM REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS SEASON!!!!!

my favorite scene had to be in the Planet when she was "looking for her pen."

YES! That was *adorable*. Also, a nice inversion of the usual Lois/Clark trope: there were moments when Clark very much *suspected* she was playing dumb for him, but dismissed his suspicions, thereby letting her keep *her* secret (that she knows *his*).

And his self-satisfied grin when she described kissing the Blur was hilariously adorable. :D

I also love that he's embracing his heroic destiny even when Jor-El is being as douchy about it ass usual (albeit in unusual ways).

Yeah. (Also: nice Freudian typo, there. *g*) Jor-El may have had a valid point in echoing Lex's "sin of pride" thing, but given how Jor-El's very much responsible for instilling the "saviour of humanity" idea in Clark in the first place, his sudden turn to, "YOU ARE A VAIN AND SELFISH BEING WHO WILL NEVER BE A HERO!" was kind of wtf-y.

since we couldn't even really see your chest. What was up with that?

I'm assuming they haven't yet decided how permanently-disfigured they want Oliver's best feature to be, post-'Sacrifice'. 'Cause unless he had access to medical treatment comparable to the stuff that fixed Tess's face...his chest should still be a *mess*.

And also TOTALLY raising my hopes that TW will really persuade MR to come back for a few eps.

Oh god, PLEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAASE. I'm, like, willing to sacrifice my nonexistent firstborn, at this point. *sigh* (But TPTB's creativity in bringing back *Lex* without necessarily having *MR* earns them some points!)

Addressing what is clearly the most important point first: now that they've established a young Lex clone with hair, they could TOTALLY have Lex be all new-and-improved with hair, which I understand is about 90% of MR's reason for not coming back (the baldness thing, I mean). So I join your pleas and add my non-existent firstborn to the pile.

I forgot about the previous Ollie torture (my memory, she is short) so I guess they had a valid reason for not showing the chest. Darn.

And yes, I agree with you completely about Jor-El's hypocrisy. WTF?

[identity profile] serrico.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
Addressing what is clearly the most important point first:

*snerk* Oh, yes. CLEARLY. *serious nod* (Hey, *Gene Hackman* didn't play Lex bald! And neither did John Shea! THERE ARE PRECEDENTS. [As much as I love MR with the smooth pate, if the only options for his return are Hairy Lex or Bald Cap, I will *happily* take the former.])

...the notion of a sacrificial pile of hypothetical firstborns probably shouldn't make me guffaw the way it does, right? *guffaws*

I only remember the previous Ollie torture *because* it ruined his chest, which is the only thing I've ever really enjoyed about his presence on the show. So. Yeah. *g*

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Dear MR, I hope you like the taste of hypothetical firstborns, because there is suddenly a whole mountain of them piled outside your house.

[identity profile] serrico.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Tastes like chicken!

[identity profile] huzzlewhat.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so glad you approved of this episode, because I really loved it. Some issues, yeah, but for the most part I was just squee-ful throughout. Critical thinking later...

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I await your review with expectation, because I'd love to se some analysis of this episode, and I feel like it's been too long since I watched this show seriously for me to engage in it.

[identity profile] cinderella81.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
There were some deifinite epic moments *nods* I enjoyed the episode a lot ... I'm not totally sold on the whole clone!Lexes, but ... that could be because I miss MR so much ... I really enjoyed Jonathan and I'm glad it was just a 'poof I'm suddenly alive again' thing, and yes, the afterlife has been good to him LOL

Gratuitous torture porn was nice ... dirty!bloody!Ollie is oddly erotic ...

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2010-09-26 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
For me, the main selling point for the clone!Lexes is the fact that it gives the writers a way to do some Lex-Clark interaction even if MR can't be persuaded to come back. (Though I hope he can be persuaded).

I LOVED the beginning with Lois being all savey and then all pen searching-like and I totally have a weak spot for father-son reunions and I am really looking forward to this season.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2010-09-26 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Lois was so fantastic in this ep! And like I said, I was very pleasantly surprised at how much I loved the Jonathan-Clark reunion.

[identity profile] beck-liz.livejournal.com 2010-09-26 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Eeeeeeeeeee!!!! I just finished it. I was like, saving it for the last of the shows recorded from this week in hopes that it would be awesome, and lo it was. :-D

Lois is awesome. I love her so much, but seriously, they had better not keep her away for too long. I want me some Lois and Clark with Lois knowing and Clark knowing she knows, dagnabbit!

And holy crap, his whole conversation with Jonathan--especially the delivery of "I missed you"--made me cry and cry.

This. I was sniffly all the way through that, and Jonathan always had a tendency in the past to make me roll my eyes a lot. Here, though? I feel like there also needs to be a nyah-na-na-na at Jor-El, too. I mean, yes, pride is definitely something Clark should be wary of, but to completely dismiss Clark? Whatever, Jor-El.

And the fact that she's acting as a mother figure for the little Lex clone is creepily perfect.

This. I love that. I love that so much. So awesome yet creepy all at once.

And also TOTALLY raising my hopes that TW will really persuade MR to come back for a few eps.

*whimper* For all that I have not been bemoaning the loss of Michael Rosenbaum as some have, I do miss the guy. I really hope they can sneak him in there somehow.

Also? I adored that we finally got to see The Suit, and not just in a reflection. And Lois approves! *flaily Kermit arms* Yay!

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2010-09-26 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't imagine they're going to keep Lois away too long--I mean, it is the final season, so they can't drag things out too much. And considering that AM is only supposed to be in what, 4 episodes or something? They need Lois just for casting reasons--they're down to very few main cast members.

Jor-El was a complete jerk in this episode, but I have always hated computer Jor-El, so I automatically assume everything he says is bullshit.

The SUIT! Yes, I forgot to mention that. I hope he gets to start wearing it soon.

Yes! The episode was just fantastically effective for me. Awesome premiere!

The Jonathan & Clark scene was so emotional.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2010-09-26 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Definitely! And I have to say, I never expected to love a Jonathan-Clark scene the way I loved that one.

[identity profile] shopgirl318.livejournal.com 2010-09-27 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked the episode. Clone!Lex was creepy and the whole air around the episode was dark, creepy, suspenseful and the scenes with Tess/little Alexander reminded me of the weird scene with Lionel/bunny and ghost!Emily from season 1. I do wish the show would stop undercutting Clark at every turn and I too enjoyed his scenes with Jonathon at the sunny yellow farmhouse. It was goregous and well done.

I am wondering if during the last episode Clark won't actually wear the suit until the end or only shown the crystal being broken and the suit removed? I don't think Clark will be in it though. I do like that Lois still knows but I hate that the show just won't let them acknowdledge it and talk about it for once. I still think it is more interesting when both parties know and not the secret keeping.

Unpopular opinion: I am ready for Chloe/Clark to be done friendship and all. There is so much water under the bridge and TPTB aren't doing a thing to let them work out their issues with each other. Their scenes still didn't feel warm or friendly, I couldn't even belive Chloe's concern for Clark after he she heard he died I just I don't know.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2010-09-29 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, interesting comparison to that Emily episode. (I think I used to have an icon of Lionel with the bunny of creepiness).

I was wondering if we're going to wait on the suit, too. I guess we'll just have to see.

I'm pretty sure they're going to stretch the Lois-Clark thing out for a while, since they have 20 more episodes to get through. Alas.

I feel like this season I just want to let go any expectations and enjoy whatever comes my way. To enjoy the last moments with my friends of SV.

Was the ep perfect? No. But it was a damn good solid ep.

Glad you enjoyed it too!!!

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2010-09-29 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, that's how I feel about this season too.
