Advice?
So I've been kind of radio silent lately (and slow to respond to people--sorry about that) because work has been crazy, and my at-home laptop is dying a slow death; right now I can get it to turn on for 5-10 minutes, reliably, and then it shuts off due to power source issues. I'm just waiting for the big sales next week to replace it. Now, I already have a netbook which is lovely for travel and things, but it turns out the screen is way too small for me to use it on a regular basis--my eyes are getting old. But in some ways it has spoiled me: it has fantastic battery life (about 10 hours) and is light as a feather.
So I'm looking for a new laptop that has a decent screen size, enough power to run the standard office suite-type things (I don't do gaming and I do very little vid-related stuff, so it doesn't have to have lots of bells and whistles in that direction), is fairly lightweight and has a battery life of at least 4 hours. And I'd prefer not to spend more than $600 or so. Anyone have suggestions of laptops they love? Nearly every computer I've ever owned, other than the netbook (which is an Asus) has been a Dell, so I don't really have experience with other brands. I'd appreciate any recommendations or warnings you have.

I will say that if you can, get the laptop with the least add-ons. I once had to re-format and re-install and I noticed it running a lot faster before re-installing drivers and anti-virus and extra apps and what not. Or if you’re daring, just wipe the HD once you open it and do a clean install of Windows an nothing and see if you can live without any extra stuff. Ironically, I think that’s how you’ll get the most bang for your money.
I’d buy HP or Compaq again. But I really don’t care about specs since my needs are simple — MS Office, PDFs, web browsers (with plugin blockers), a comicbook reader, an IM client, Scrivener (http://www.literatureandlatte.com/scrivener.html), Q10 (http://www.baara.com/q10/) and FocusWriter (http://gottcode.org/focuswriter/) would pretty much cover 98% of my computing needs.

they had issues with the batteries with laptops from 2007 and extended the warranty , and took back the defect ones for free, and gave you a new one, and such stuff.
plus, their support forum is also great, if you warranty has run out :)
been there XD
but HP is expensive.
on the job, we use lenovo a LOT. and I agree , they are very robust, and for normal office suite usage and surfing, they are sufficient.
my flatmate has a sony, and loves it!
but support aint so great.
and samsung, uck, my colleagues private laptop , he has tons of trouble, and would never buy it again.

Compaq/HP is good also and the poster who said they are expensive but worth it. My desktop is a Compaq and I like it.
If you are looking to buy electronics definitly wait for sales after the holidays end if they have those pesky black friday deals where you live. You can also shop around and check out different websites (best buy, office depot etc) and buy online before hand too. :)
