A couple open letters

Dear [livejournal.com profile] christirose, thanks for the gopher! Sorry it took me a while to notice; I don't check my profile too often.

Dear unknown SPN fangirl who entertained me on the bus this afternoon by telling someone (via cellphone) all about the wonders of SPN, and how it's the only show you know that actually has the characters deal with fanfic about themselves, and how much you love the Ghostfacers, and how you've still never seen the pilot: you made me wish I had fan cards (like business cards, only with my LJ & gmail addresses) to give out in situations like this. I actually was going to ask you for your LJ handle--because there is no way you don't have one, after that conversation--but you got off the bus before I mustered up the nerve, alas. And I was going to offer to lend you my season 1 DVDs, too. If by some random chance of cyberspace you stumble across this, email me.

(Maybe we need a fannish version of Craigslist for messages like this?)

That situation has happened to me before. I was in a training session with a woman in october and we started talking about writing. After a while I got up the nerve to ask if she was doing NaNo that year and she kind of looked at me sideways and said yes, she was. And another woman started asking her what kind of things she wrote and from the answers she definitely had an LJ. I wasn't sure of the etiquette for that situation so we ended up kind of standing around in silence for a while.

TL;DR - We def. need a pan-fandom comm to deal with things like that. Or an agreed upon hand signal.

Hand signals! That would be good! Or a secret badge/pin/ring or something like that. :-)

Or just fandom cards. I'm thinking they would be like mini versions of your LJ profile page, or something.

What a lovely story :)

Thanks!! It's nice to know there are people out there singing the praises of SPN.

Awww! You could try the actual Craigslist missed connections.

I think that would feel a little creepy to me. Actually, part of the reason I didn't say anything to her was because that felt like it would be a little creepy, too. But who knows--I ride that bus a lot, I may have future opportunities.

Aw, that's so lovely! I always freak out a bit when my RL friends start talking about shows I watch, but to have a complete stranger talk about it in my vicinity would be AWESOME. :D

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, and I live in an area that feels relatively bereft of fangirls (at least compared to people living in major cities--I'm always a little jealous when I hear of fan gatherings elsewhere. Not cons, just a bunch of people meeting up to see a movie or something. I've made 2 fannish friends in the eleven years I've lived here, and while they are both awesome, neither is in any of my fandoms, alas.

Heh, I'm not even sure how many fangirls there are in my entire COUNTRY. I have seen quite a few people obsessing over Glee in RL, but very rarely for smaller, less-budget shows like Supernatural or Smallville.

Fan cards! Good idea, I so could have used them at the last convention I went to. So many missed connections, and a lot of them I might not see again. :-(

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
That's too bad. :-(

Yes, fan cards! I might get some made for myself, I think--what the heck?
