I know I've been kind of absent on LJ lately, mostly because work is eating my face, but in the little free time I've had in the last 6 weeks I've fallen hard for Hawaii Five-O.
It's fun to see the fandom exploding over the epic love story of Danny and Steve, and while I certainly enjoy that aspect of the show, I'm actually in it more for Kono and Chin, so I loved that they both had significant plotlines last night.
Basically every time Kono cries, I cry, so I loved all her emotional scenes last night: having to break the news about his father's death to Ando James Kyson-Lee; her reaction when the little boy gave her the special knot that had been passed down from grandfather to father to son; and especially her reactions to all the family stuff, finding out why Chin had kept silent about who really stole the money. I love how fiercely protective she is of him, and how much she wants his reputation to be cleared, even though he himself is at peace with it.
And Chin! God, someone stoically taking the fall for someone they love is one of my absolute bulletproof kinks, so that whole storyline just completely blew me away. And the fact that not only did he take the fall for his uncle even though it meant being shunned by his whole family, but also that he had to visit his auntie secretly that whole time--*sobs*. The fact that making a sacrifice for his family alienated him from his whole family just really kills me dead. (I almost couldn't watch that scene where he walks into his aunt's house and all conversation stops, I had such a sympathetic shame reaction). I really, really wish there was more fic about Chin in this fandom, exploring his motives and choices, and I hope this episode prompts more of it. Especially because it's clear that the way he made peace with his choices was by adopting 5-0 as a surrogate family. And the parallels between his uncle stealing the money to save his aunt and Steve and Kono stealing the money to save him are interesting ones, especially since ultimately the black-market kidney didn't save his aunt. I wonder if that's foreshadowing something about the end of the season?
Of course I also enjoyed the Steve/Danny shenanigans, though mostly they made me laugh. It completely cracks me up, for example, that Steve doesn't seem to be able to relax and enjoy nature without immediately tying everything to the Wo Fat plot. (It reminded me, in fact, of the episode where he goes spearfishing with Chin). I also laughed like a hyena when Steve ended up splinting his own arm and then investigating the murder while he was waiting for Danny, because SERIOUSLY? I mean, there's tough navy SEAL BAMFing, and then there's just being a hilarious over-the-top parody of BAMFness, and for me this fell into the second category. Especially because the dude got HIT IN THE FACE with a seriously big rock, and didn't seem to even be bruised, much less concussed--and apparently a broken arm doesn't prevent him from (a) rock climbing or (b) throwing down with a suspect, even if it does (hilariously) prevent him from having to investigate fish.
(And can I say, btw, that I now want Rachel Ray* or Sandra Lee* to show up as bad guys, as long as they're running through the entire Food Network cast? I did adore Masaharu Morimoto singing karaoke, though).
This episode did leave me with a few questions, besides the one about whether Steve's head is just so hard that rocks can't affect it. To wit:
1. Were Danny and Steve taking a personal day for their date hike, or are Kono and Chin just workaholics who hang around headquarters on the weekends?
2. What else does Steve carry in that magical pack besides rope, duct tape (and presumably climbing shoes)?
3. Is the black market Chinese kidney going to end up being traced back to Wo Fat, somehow? (My guess is yes).
4. Is there some reason why they didn't show us Steve and Danny's wedding? (I mean, seriously--how else can you interpret the "I heart you" and Danny being completely incensed at that waitress hitting on Steve)?
5. Why does Kamekona always, always make me laugh? (Ok, I actually know this--he's like the Hawaiian version of my brother J., down to the shaved head and sense of humor). My real question, though, is when did Kamekona become an official member of 5-0, since he's clearly now accompanying them to office outings.
[Warning: irrational hatred alert] *Edited to explain: These two in particular so Steve or Danny could SHOOT THEM IN THE FACE. That would be very satisfying.[/Irrational hatred]
