Smallville: Kent and SPN: My Heart will Go On

Just a couple of quick reactions to "Kent".

1. I thought I was doing ok with the approaching end of Smallville, though I did get a little bit of a pang when the Luthor mansion got burned down--but it turns out I'M a lot more attached to that yellow Kent farmhouse than Martha, Clark, or Lois. *OH MY HEART* Yeah, I got it thematically, in the alt world and this one, your home is the people you love, not a physical space, and that was lovely for the Jonathan-Martha and Clark-Lois stuff, but dammit, I am attached to the Kent farmhouse! I don't want them to sell it! *Clings to Smallville desperately*

2. Tess clearly has a LOT more willpower than me, because if I had Clark Luthor trying to seduce me + get me to help him kill off my worst enemy, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to resist. Especially if I was basically in love with Clark. So kudos to her. And I appreciate TPTB giving a little more support for a Tess/Emil ship, in that scene at the end.

3. Lois + Clark 4EVA!!!! And can I just say, I loved that Lois was the one person who wanted to hold onto the farm because it was the only stable home she ever had, and she remembered Jonathan and Martha there--but I also loved that Clark is all the Smallville she needs. *Happy Sigh*

4. I never love Clark more than when he is doing the Superman "I will make you a better person just by believing in you" thing, and he got to do it twice in this episode--for poor crazy Jonathan (which I was expecting) and then for alt Clark (which honestly I was not expecting--I thought they'd just send him back to the altverse, so I got a little verklempt that he was going to get a chance to redeem himself too).

And a bit longer commentary on "My Heart will Go On," though mostly in the form of exclamations

1. ELLEN!!!!!! ELLEN ELLEN ELLEN ELLEN ELLEN! I AM SO HAPPY THEY FOUND A WAY TO BRING HER BACK!!!!!!!!!!! Of course I knew we'd lose her by the end of the episode (*sob*), but I was glad of what we got, because I really missed her. And I was unspoiled, so it was a pretty amazing surprise.

2. Dean, HOW long have you been a hunter? In all this time, you haven't figured out a smooth way to warn people about the supernatural, really? (Ok, your lack of social skills were showing more than normal in this ep in general, but GEEZ.)

3. Who's Celine Dion? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

4. "The other angel. The one in the dirty trench coat who's in love with you". !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5. I laughed my ass off at that scene where the boys were walking along tempting fate. Especially at the juggling hatchets. Hee!

6. Souls for the war machine? Minting money? Very very interesting. I'm really curious about what we're going to find out about how souls are actually used.

7. Atropos is a pretty hot librarian, I have to say. Though I'm a little surprised they decided to make Fate someone who worked for God rather than an independent operator

8. You killed 50,000 people for us. Damn, the Dean/Castiel shippers are gonna go crazy. I do love Castiel keeping stuff from them, though, and letting them think it's just Balthazar being whimsical. Interesting strategic thinking there.

9. Oh, Bobby. You poor sad man. I'm not sure if it's worse never to know about Ellen, or to have lost a second wife.

10. Three times in the episode it was repeated that it's better not to be born than to die bloody (Bobby, Ellen, and Castiel all said it independently). I think, somehow, this must be significant or foreshadowy, but I honestly can't figure out what it might be foreshadowing.

YES. YES YES YES. Gah, they did this so *well* in this ep--especially when it came to Clark Luthor, because as you said, that was the unexpected one, and therefore (IMO) the more effective one.

I laughed my ass off at that scene where the boys were walking along tempting fate.

Such easy jokes, but somehow, such *hilarious* ones. I enjoyed that sequence a heck of a lot, too. *g*

Sometimes the easy jokes are the most fun, I think.

To me, Tess and Clark Luthor was equal parts, “Stay away from the sociopath” and “What is wrong with you, jump him, jump him now.” . . . I’m sure she felt the same way.

And the farm. *sobs*

What do you think it means that it seems no one had a right to self-determinism before the boys came along? On the one hand, freedom, liberty and self-determinism are very american concepts. On the other hand, Sam and Dean have messed up a lot of Calvinist dogma.

And Castiel’s very crafty if he’s gonna let the boys think the Titanic was unsunk out of a whim based on pop song. That can’t end well for him.

The other angel. The one in the dirty trench coat who's in love with you.

^.^

I honestly find the whole idea of Fate a little jarring in the SPN verse, because up until now Sam and Dean (and their family) have been presented as sort of especially cursed, given that they each had a destiny--part of my assumption was that no one else (at least among humans) did. Even Calvinist predestination is not exactly Fate, because it only applies to your final destination, not every decision you make to get there.

Where I find Fate jarring is that all along we’ve been presented with the idea of God as deadbeat dad when all of a sudden, he’s just an absent dad who’s got a nanny watching over things.

I think, Sam and Dean both got their destinies because they demanded it. They give the middle finger to the idea of being puppets; they also giving the middle finger to the idea of being cursed because of free will. They are the only ones honestly fighting for self-determination.

As for Cas presenting a one-sided view of Fate, I wonder how much of that Dean will let go and I’d love to see this bubble deep in his subconscious. Dean already knows that Death and his reapers don’t do this for fun but for the least damaged world among other possibilities.

Oh, I love that phrase "absent dad who's got a nanny watching over things."

And you're right about Dean and Death, which kind of reinforces the whole Fate thing. (It would have been far more interesting, I think, to make Fate be someone who was working for Death rather than God, since we know his sphere of influence is independent.)

Atropos seems to have a lot of independence, even if she’s working for God. And she definitely is an independent agent now. I wonder how she makes decisions.

Seems like Death and his reapers were more willing to let people’s lives play out to their fullest as much as possible, whereas, Atropos is like the bean counter and proactively sets things in motion to make the beans all accounted for. She’s less librarian to me and more accountant or controller.

It was SO AWESOME to see Ellen again, I agree! I wish we could have seen Jo, too, but I loved the bits about her in the dialogue.

Dean, HOW long have you been a hunter? In all this time, you haven't figured out a smooth way to warn people about the supernatural, really?
This observation totally intrigued me...after mulling over it, I think perhaps Dean did it intentionally, but probably subconsciously. The first thing he learns about this guy is that he's apparently charging his own mother for legal advice, IIRC, and for Dean, who takes family so seriously and helps people all the time without ever expecting compensation, that had to gall. I think he was willing to save the guy, but probably not to be "nice" to him.

"The other angel. The one in the dirty trench coat who's in love with you".
Yeah, that was pretty freakin fantastic! I had no expectations for this ep other than, oh, yay, Sam and Dean are back on the telly this week, but I really enjoyed it.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2011-04-16 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, that's a good point about Dean's perception of that guy (who was definitely not the most goodhearted individual on the planet).

I do love when they give fodder to the slashers. And something tells me that Balthazar, who has such firm opinions on Celine Dion (even if they weren't his true motive), knows all about slash.

All your points about SV have me nodding like a bobble-headed doll. I really enjoyed the episode a lot. But I -- as I'm sure comes as no surprise to you -- am in special agreement with #4. Clark. Oh, Clark. Why so Supermanly, bb?

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2011-04-17 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
Well, Supermanly is how we love him!

[identity profile] cinderella81.livejournal.com 2011-04-16 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG if I had Clark Luthor seducing me into bed? No hesitation ... I'd let him bang me in a heartbeat ...

And I love the house too! They can't sell it off!!!

And Clark is just ... so trusting ... so intent on redeeming those around him ... it makes my heart happy ... uber epically happy!!!

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2011-04-17 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yes to all of this. Though it might e a little scary to try to sleep with Clark Luthor--he'd just as easily kill you, I think.

[identity profile] cinderella81.livejournal.com 2011-04-17 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
Very true ... he would just as easily kill you ... hmmm ... that is a conundrum LOL

You forgot one VERY important thing....DEAN FINALLY WON AT ROCK, PAPER, SCISSORS!!!!!!

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2011-04-17 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah, good point! I loved the surprised look on Sam's face, too.
