Exciting Good Wife News

I guess this is a casting spoiler, so I will put it behind a cut:

They've apparently signed Alan Cumming as a regular for the next 3 years, so Eli Gold will stick around even now that the election's over. YAY! I love Eli almost as much as I love Kalinda. Link to the source here.

THANK GOD!!!! *breathes enormous sigh of relief*

*Waves hi at K* Nice to see you! Did I know you were watching The Good Wife? Are you up to date in such a way that I could discuss recent plot developments with you?

I am! I made a Kalinda vid a while back. :) I think we squeed about Eli at some stage... I have been travelling, so I have just recently caught up on the show. I got to watch the latest eps with [livejournal.com profile] m_a_r_i_k_s who is a BIG fan and we spent hours dissecting things! :D :D (She made a great season 1 vid: http://m-a-r-i-k-s.livejournal.com/13920.html). But yes, if I was more present on LJ right now, The Good Wife would be my number 1 show I'd be talking about probably. :) (With TVD being the other one, on the lighter end of the spectrum!)

Oh, I remember now. (Honestly, these days I think all available brain space is being taken up by work and fannish stuff just runs out of my ears). So what do you think about the revelation about Kalinda? The thought of her friendship with Alicia imploding is KILLING me.

[identity profile] bop-radar.livejournal.com 2011-04-26 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
IT's REALLY KILLING ME, YEAH!! I was actually impressed because it was so *obvious* all along, really, but I was genuinely shocked by the reveal. I guess I'd wanted to ignore that possibility because I liked Kalinda and her friendship with Alicia so much. Alicia will really be devastated... I do kind of feel like it's going to be the wake-up call that Kalinda needs though. She really has this protective bubble around her and she won't let people puncture it... Cary is coming the closest to reaching her, but in a way I feel like Kalinda needs a storm out of which she can reach a new stage of her life. For Alicia too, I hope ultimately that some good will come of knowing the truth (DUMP PETER GODDAM IT!!) but I am really just flinching in expectation of how devastating this is going to be for her.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2011-04-26 03:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I have to say, it never actually occurred to me, mostly because last season (when I guess it was more hinted at) I was thinking that Kalinda was lesbian rather than bi. So I found it completely shocking and devastating, but it definitely explained a lot of Kalinda's behavior toward Alicia.

I hope you're right that this will help Kalinda actually connect with people, but I'm afraid it'll just make her more self-protective. I do love her relationship with Cary, even though I'd kind of like them to let her actually have a relationship with a woman, so I'm torn.

I'm also afraid they're not going to have her make a clean break with Peter, just because I doubt this show is actually going to go the Will/Alicia route fully until the last season. Though I could definitely be wrong. I'd kind of like it if she took Michael J. Fox's offer and joined his firm, just so she wasn't Will's subordinate, since it would make the relationship more likely for me. And then Cary could come back to Lockhart Gardner and they could have all sorts of interesting political stuff between the firms.

Mmm.... I definitely read Kalinda as bi, but with a strong preference for women, at least at this phase in her life, so it wasn't that I didn't think she was capable of sleeping with a man... and I even 'knew' that she would have the strength, if you can call it that, to sleep with one to get something she wanted--although I think it really has to have been something HUGE (help clearing her past or whatever). She is capable of detaching from herself temporarily to get what she wants, but it costs her a great deal even if she pushes it down and doesn't acknowledge that. And I worry that she will never be able to share with Alicia, perhaps one of the few people who could truly understand, how very much this act was painful for her. The face she puts on is that she doesn't care, of course, but that's such a lie... early on she fell for Alicia (whether that's read as physical/sexual attraction or just deep friendship/love, it's very clear) and I think betraying her will cause a horrible schism inside her. There is a better part of Kalinda that could rise up out of this... we saw it in her impulse to go and speak to Alicia about it directly and in her beautiful scene with Will where she nudged him towards Alicia, knowing that she will soon need someone. My concern is no one will be there for her to help her through... Cary maybe, though his approach is partially to just give Kalinda space to *be* Kalinda, while reflecting back at her just how warped she can be sometimes.

I do hope the show gives her chance to grow in her relationships with others. For me, I don't really mind who that's with but if it doesn't also include a continued evolution with Alicia then I will be a) very surprised and b) feel betrayed by the show. I think those two have the power to grow as people with each other. I don't expect the show to make it a sexual relationship and for me it doesn't need to be, but it is going to be agony if/while they are estranged. Maybe each of them needs to grow on their own a bit, but ultimately it's in their friendship that I want to see both women stronger, regardless of who they are 'with'. :p

Alicia... yeah, I too don't feel they'll go the full Will/Alicia path til the very end, although I am finding that frustrating because I feel very strung along, this season, by the whole 'missed phonecall' arc. Your possibility would be supercool, I think, though I would miss Alicia at Lockhart/Gardner, that's for sure! I do think the fact that she's had so many offers from other firms is leading *somewhere* though... it must be. And the show has surprised me in the past.

I'm going to be interested to see what Will's reaction to the news is... not just for how he may reach out to Alicia, but also to see what he's like with Kalinda.

Also can I just say briefly how much I love love love the Will-Diane partnership?! EPIC LOOOOOOVE. :)

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
Definitely EPIC love for Will-Diane. I was so relieved when the split in their partnership didn't happen, I can't even tell you.

I don't actually want Alicia to leave Lockhart-Gardner, but I didn't want Cary to leave either and it let them go really interesting places this season, so I think the writers could make it work.

I think (from my own biased perspective) that they HAVE to eventually repair the Alicia-Kalinda friendship, even if it takes a long time, since for me it is the heart of the show. And I definitely think Kalinda is in love with her, though I doubt the show would ever go the direction of a relationship between them.

I loved everything you said above about Kalinda thinking she can control all the emotions she's suppressing, but she's really not going to be able to.

[identity profile] bop-radar.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 11:26 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, yes, my relief was IMMENSE.

I agree--I thought the writers made Cary leaving work really well and I was initially not thrilled about that. I like how Cary has grown through the experience though.

Yes, I think Kalinda is in love with Alicia, though I am not sure how consciously aware of that or not she is--there are so many layers in Kalinda's mind, I honestly can't tell! But for Alicia too I think Kalinda plays a very special part. She really doesn't have another friend like that, someone who genuinely doesn't want anything else from her. She has her epic angst with Will and she has (shudders) Peter, but that's really not the same. Although I love it when Owen comes to town, because I love seeing Alicia around him.... :p

I am going to be riveted (nervously, admittedly! but I do largely trust the writers) to the coming end-of-season arc!

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
YAY!

I think you're probably right about Alicia and Peter, though honestly I would like her to at least separate from him.
