Some belated spn bigbang recs
I had this entry ready to go before I went to Chicago, and somehow never got around to posting it, so most of these stories are from early July or late June, though I've added a couple recent ones. I am so behind on bigbang reading and don't know when I'll catch up, though there are several stories I really want to read.
Our Story is Infinite by
elizah_jane (Jared/Jensen).
I went into this thinking this was just going to be another college AU, but I love [Unknown site tag]'s writing, so I was sure it would be bantery and fun. And for the first chapter and a half, it's exactly that--poor Jared moves into a house with his friend Chad in college, not realizing that his archnemesis Jensen also lives there. And ok, the reasons Jensen is his archnemesis are very silly, so of course they end up hooking up--only then we discover this is an entirely different kind of story altogether, and I don't want to spoil you, but it is really very fun and light-hearted twist on a certain kind of classic adventure plot. Misha's role in particular in this story cracked me up, but I also love Gen's characterization.
Scavenger Hunt (Jared/Jensen) by

I'd been meaning to read this one since it was posted, but somehow it got buried among other stories. (So many stories! I start to feel bad for authors). Anyway, this was a fun, sweet college AU where Jared and Jensen are rivals in a University of Chicago scavenger hunt.

An atmospheric AU: Instead of fetching Sam's soul himself, Death sends Dean to hell on a quest to find it. A really interesting hellscape, an I liked Dean's quest, though I was honestly expecting more obstacles.
Wings, Rings and Interspecies Flings (Adam/Michael)
I didn't know I wanted this story until I read it, but I really did want a story where (a) Adam gets rescued from the Pit and (b) Michael turns out not to be such a dick after all. The fact that this is also marriage of convenience soulbonding of convenience, which is one of my favorite tropes, is just the cherry on top of the sundae. The other Winchesters (and Gabriel and Castiel) do show up, but only at the end of the story, so if you don't want to read about Adam & Michael, I'd skip this--but if you do, this story is a lot of fun.
Carry on Up this Broken Tide by
nanoochka (Dean/Castiel, Dean/Lisa).
I have a big infidelity squick, so normally I would have avoided this completely non-supernatural AU in which Cas flees to California after discovering that Dean, the man he is in love with, is actually married with a kid--but the writing is really good, and the writer does a good job tracing the emotional fallout of the affair on both Cas and Dean. And the twist of the story is that in California, Cas becomes close friends with Sam, not realizing that he is Dean's brother, and when Dean shows up both he and Cas have their own reasons for concealing their past relationship from Sam. This is a long story, but I never thought it dragged; it could have used a better Ameri-picker, but otherwise I found it very engaging, and there's some cute meta on the Sam-Dean-Castiel relationship, because Sam is a writer who is basically writing Supernatural for a living.
Too Wise to woo peaceably, or much ado about you (Jared/Jensen, Danneel/Gen). Really fun AU in which Jensen is directing "Much Ado About Nothing" in the famous Texas summer Shakespeare Festival when his Benedick breaks his leg, and so Jared--star of a television space opera where he plays a bisexual alien--gets cast instead--only Jared and Jensen have a past, and it's not pretty. Meanwhile, Jensen's stage manager Danneel is falling for reporter Genevieve Cortese, who may or may not be trying to trash their play by writing a big expose for the LA Times. Very fun parallels between the relationships in this story and the relationships in "Much Ado About Nothing," and in general a very enjoyable story.
