The return of TV
So I decided to check out Gotham. Spoilers behind the cut, naturally.
I had seen some negative reviews, so I had low expectations, but I liked it. It didn't exactly wow me, but I enjoyed it enough to keep watching for a while, at least. Things I liked a lot:
1. OMG, are they basically implying that Barbara Gordon (sorry, I don't remember what her non-married name is) and Rene Montoya used to have a relationship? Because OH YEAH I am onboard that ship.
2. Jada Pinkett Smith is an awesome bad guy, I've gotta say. I also really liked the guy playing Alfred.
3. Bullock is much more interesting than I was expecting him to be.
4. At first I was a little disappointed in how stupid Jim was (going to his partner to take about that guy being framed, really? Going alone to Fish's lair?), and how he basically stayed alive through the episode on sheer dumb luck (and the fact that the mob boss had some sort of relationship with his dad), but I've decided that as long as he does have a learning curve, I'm going to like the fact that he's authentically a rookie detective with a good heart rather than already being an expert. It's going to make the whole fighting-against-Gotham's-corruption storyline more interesting to watch.
5. The fact that he let Bruce make the decision about whether or not he stayed on the force was interesting. And frankly a little creepy. Which actually makes me like it? It's way too much weight to put in the hands of a traumatized boy, which is of course one of the things that makes it work for me, since it just makes Jim a key part of the trauma that produces the Batman.
And Sleepy Hollow is back! Yay!
I was very glad that the "one year later" thing turned out to be a fakeout, because (A) that is SUCH A COPOUT when shows end a season on a cliffhanger, but that was still a fun twist and (B) I was terrified for a bit there that Jenny was actually dead. (I am not quite as attached to Katrina).
I forgot how much I just love Abbie and Ichabod working together and solving cases. That first bit with the cupcake and the investigating and the synchronized fight with the great new weapons and Abbie pulling Ichabod back from his revenge-seeking was just fun.
And I also loved their encounter through the mirror, where she was so insistent that he not save her when it put the whole world at risk, and he insisting there's no way he'll leave her behind--oh, my heart. (I am equally ok to ship them or see them as BFFs, honestly).
Unfortunately my cable cut out for about 4 minutes during the climactic fight in purgatory, so I don't know exactly how they got out, which is pretty frustrating. I guess I'll have to watch that part online once FOX posts it.
