Oh, Agents of Shield
Just when I was thinking this was a legitimately great episode, you had to do that spoilery thing.
Goddammit. I had a feeling they would kill of Lucy Lawless' character, so when she had her merc dude cut off her hand, I thought we had dodged that bullet. DAMMIT.(And it made me especially mad because that showed what a COMPLETE badass she was--I really wish they could have kept her, or if they couldn't afford LL's salary, at least not killed her so she could guest star occasionally).
Other than that, though, I kind of loved this episode. First of all, I knew Peggy Carter was going to make an appearance this season, but I didn't realize it was this episode! Awesome! Clearly she was leading the Commandos after Steve went down, which makes me very happy. Also I enjoyed seeing Dum Dum and Morita--and I hope this means the Commandos are going to make regularly guest appearances on the Peggy Carter show!
I also thought overall the plotting and dialogue of this episode was generally better than a lot of last season, though that may just be due to the fact that my snarky SHIELD-watching buddy can no longer watch with me this season. But I wasn't cringing all the time, which is a definite step up.
I especially liked how Skye seems to have come into herself, not simply as the computer genius but as a fully capable agent working as partners with May. I completely loved her take-no-bullshit attitude with Ward, too. And (at least while Lucy Lawless was still alive) I was pretty impressed with the male-female agent ratio, and the fact that another one of the new guys is black. Now they just have to work on keeping the awesome women guest stars ALIVE, please. (Presumably they can't kill Mockingbird, can they?)
The reveal about Simmons just broke my heart, though. Ouch. I expect she'll be back in a few episodes with a miracle cure for Fitz, but that still hurt to watch.
I do like how they're implying that Coulson is maybe not all the way there, with his weird pauses and things. He is much more interesting to me as a character if we're constantly wondering if we can trust him or if he's slowly being taken over by the Kree (or whatever the hell blue alien he got blood from).
And on a shallow note--if I MUST watch a slow redemption arc for Ward (yawn), at least I enjoy looking at him more with the beard than without it?
