Agent Carter

I loved this episode so much!

I really loved that opening with the Black Widow training program. That was a flashback/memory of Dottie's, yes? Which means they were doing this even before WWII, which is fascinating. I loved that she shared the bread with her friend and yet had no qualms about killing her when ordered. And then handcuffing herself to the bed at the end! What a way to show how brainwashed she still is. I think they should have made the little girl the Commandos found in Russia red-haired so we could all spend a long time arguing whether or not it was really supposed to be Natasha Romanoff.

I was a little disappointed that Peggy didn't catch Dottie stealing her keys, but I was actually more surprised that Dottie didn't end up with the vial of Steve's blood when she was searching Peggy's apartment, so I guess it just shows neither of them is quite as good as I expect them to be.

And otherwise Peggy was just so fantastic tonight. I really love when she gets to show the SSR exactly how competent she is, so I loved how she cracked that code in about 30 seconds, and persuaded her way onto the team going to Russia. And everything in Russia was great. I realized I really like it when she gets to be in battle gear, not just in suits and heels, and I especially love how the Howling Commandos just take her orders without question and assume she's going to be the one in charge. She does it so well, too, though I'm pretty sure the Russian psychiatrist is going to turn out to be a plant of some kind. (They knew it was a Leviathan trap, so I'm really unsure why they wouldn't think the prisoners are just part of the same trap? The little girl clearly was. I found Peggy's lack of suspicion to be rather puzzling).

It's interesting that Dooley is finally starting to ask questions about whether or not Howard Stark is really guilty. (Oh, and bonus journalist John Glover! That was a fun bit part). I hope that will help if they do actually end up arresting Peggy next week.

I am torn on that whole plotline, because I really liked Peggy's friendship with Sousa, and even if (I assume) she eventually gets cleared, I still think that's going to ultimately end up damaging the friendship, just like Stark's lies damaged his relationship with Peggy. Still, I love that Sousa turns out to be the smart one and the good investigator.

And meanwhile, Agent Chad Michael Murray (I can never remember his actual name) gets a somewhat complicated backstory. I am assuming the specific backstory means he's definitely not going to be the love interest--even if he clearly regrets it now, he did kill a lot of men who were trying to surrender, which makes him sort of the anti-Steve Rogers. Still, it's more interesting in certain ways than the idea that he was another big hero in the war. He always seemed like he was compensating for something, and it turns out he was, in a big way--his own guilt. I'm actual more surprised that he didn't end up lashing out against Peggy more. She saved his life and he confessed to her, but that isn't necessarily something that would lead everyone to gratitude; it might just make him madder at her for being more competent than he is and for knowing his vulnerability. I sometimes expect this show to be more complicated about human motivations than it is, I guess?

Anyway, I really really enjoyed this one, and I'm really looking forward to the next episode, except that it brings us closer to the end of the series. What am I going to do without a new Agent Carter every week?
