Jupiter Ascending
After reading several reviews about how the hilarious awfulness of this movie made it worth watching, I of course had to see it.
I went in with severely lowered expectations, and ended up enjoying it a lot. Yes, it is annoying that Mila Kunis has very little agency in most of the film, and yes, the dynasty stuff probably needed more movie time to do it justice, but as a gorgeously shot space-opera with terrific special effects it was definitely worth it to see it on the big screen. And honestly I didn't find the plot as incoherent or hard to follow as many reviews said it was. I actually enjoyed a lot of the worldbuilding, especially the things just hinted at that fanfic could do a lot with, such as the trio of alien bounty hunters, and the whole relationship between human-animal splices and the military. And I'm not going to lie, I could stare at Mila Kunis' gorgeous eyes for quite a long time without getting bored, and it didn't hurt that she got to wear some amazing costumes. Charming Potato, on the other hand, is not quite as eye-candylicious with the hair and the ears, though I otherwise enjoyed his character quite a bit.
Whoever said that big chunks of this film are just bait for fangirls wasn't lying. I mean, the canonical love story could be read as human/werewolf (which is obviously rife for A/B/O tropes), and the fact that he's the only one she wants calling her "Your Majesty" has very d/s overtones to me. And then there's the whole incest angle(I mean, marrying your mother's genetic clone?), not to mention the Sean Bean/Charming Potato backstory; even Sean's daughter called them on it having slashy overtones. And wow, Eddie Redmayne was chewing scenery like no tomorrow while shirtless and wearing a cape. Really, I may have to buy this film, it was so ridiculously entertaining (often unintentionally, of course--some scenes were so OTT I was hurting myself laughing).
I actually would love to see a sequel where Mila got to actually do something, now that she's Empress of the Universe or whatever. And maybe we could see a little bit more of this universe, which is a fascinating one.
