Avengers: Endgame again
Since my last review was more "where can fandom go from here," this one is mainly things I loved about the film. (Probably will do the opposite later this weekend). Serious Avengers: Endgame spoilers below.
SO MUCH fanservice. OMG. My favorite bits, somewhat in order:
1. Steve being able to wield Mjolnir (my whole theater cheered) and Thor's "I knew it."
2. That whole scene with SHIELDRA in the elevator, especially Steve's "Hail Hydra." That was so good on multiple levels: smart strategic Steve, sassy Steve (though it would also have been fun if he'd replicated the elevator fight), but also a wonderful meta-comment on that fucked up comic arc with Steve as Hydra.
3. All the Pepper/Tony, omg. Especially Pepper at his death, being strong for him so he could rest (*sobs uncontrollably*), but also supporting his time travel research because she knew he needed to do it, even if it might destroy their little family. And OMG I love Morgan, and I love Tony as a dad, even though I knew as soon as I saw her that Tony was never making it out alive. Also, Pepper as Rescue!
4. Steve/Peggy! Oh my heart! (I already talked about the issues with it in my last post, so I'm just including the squee here).
5. The callback/reversal "Don't do anything stupid while I'm gone"/"You're taking all the stupid with you."
6. Just about everyone getting to reconnect with the most significant person they lost. Thor and Frigga hit me on the most emotional level, even though I thought the Tony and Howard scene was the best non-reconciliation reconciliation, especially because they were able to bond over fatherhood (*sobs again*).
7. "On your left." I actually loved that more than Steve giving Sam the shield, though that was probably because I was expecting the latter.
8. Though I am still in complete denial of the finality of Natasha's death, that scene where she and Clint are fighting about who should sacrifice themselves was really fantastic.
9. Rocket and Nebula's handholding when she returns at the beginning of the film.
10. That it was Nebula who persuaded Gamora this time around to openly fight Thanos. (And in general I love how the way they brought Gamora back isn't just a simple fix-it, but will make the next Guardians movie more interesting).
11. All of the banter about America's ass. Wow, that was fodder for so many different ships!
12. Valkyrie becoming King!!! (The only piece of the Thor arc I actually liked).
13. All the surprise cameos! I think I liked Frigga best, just because I always wanted Thor to get to say goodbye to his mom, but I also loved that we got to see more of Alexander Pierce and Sitwell and Rumlow (while he was still at peak hotness). And EDWIN JARVIS! YAY! (And Peggy of course, but I kind of expected her somewhere, so that wasn't really a surprise).
14. Loki stealing the Tesseract is a great way to bring him back without resurrection. (As with Gamora, I do regret we're going to lose the older version and what he's learned, but it will certainly make the plot of the new Loki show more interesting).
15. Bruce and the Hulk coming together! I have wanted this forever!
16. The Steve v. Steve fight, because it was funny and I am shallow.
17. Carol's new haircut. (Otherwise I thought she was kind of underused, though I understand why--she's overpowered otherwise).
18. When everyone showed up for the final fight. I didn't even need the fight itself, them just being there was good for me. (Though I also loved the relay race to get the gauntlet across).
19. That Thanos died by turning to dust after seeing all his supporters turn to dust. That was just the MOST KARMIC ENDING EVER.
20. Tony's funeral. (NAT should have also had a funeral or a joint funeral, that's in my next post, so I'll address that later). His recording broke me (I love you 3000), and showing everybody there, including Harley Keener! and confirming Maria and Nick's undusting, and "proof Tony Stark has a heart"--ok, I'm crying again.
Ok, I'll stop here but I'm sure I'm forgetting things.

The relay race was majestic, in that they were Doing This Together and no-one had to do it all, they just had to do their All and then the next character was there for what they could manage. I look forward to being able to pay more attention to this.
Sam getting to say "On Your Left" was a fantastic feeling.
