The Old Guard
I see it's been over a year since I posted anything. Yikes. Part of the problem is that I didn't consume a lot of new media in the past year; I kind of got out of the habit of watching TV, and even the pandemic didn't change that much.
I did see somebody's post somewhere, though, that said something about The Old Guard being something like Highlander with Charlize Theron playing the Methos part, so I thought that was worth checking out, and I did enjoy it muchly. The rec I saw hadn't mentioned precisely how canonically gay it was, though! Let's see if I cant still remember how to do a
Ok, first of all I've been in love with short-haired action hero Charlize Theron at least since she played Furiosa, and damn, I think she is at peak hotness in this film. And the action sequences are awesome, especially the fight in the plane with Nile, which just read like foreplay to me.
Second, while the most explicitly canonical gayness in the film is obviously Nicky/Joe, who make lovely goopy romantic speeches to each other and kiss onscreen and have been together since they were on opposite sides of the crusades, it seemed to me that Andy/Quynh relationship was nearly as canonical, which sets up one of my favorite femslash dynamics (that can probably be traced to my long ago days in Xena fandom): the heroine torn between her relationship with her younger friend/mentee and her former friend/now nemesis. I absolutely cannot wait for the fic in this fandom.
Third, if I weren't already bi, all those gorgeous soft-butch marines in Nile's platoon would have definitely pulled me in that direction. Damn.
Overall I wouldn't say it's very deep or anything, but it's gorgeous eyecandy and lots of fun action sequences and great relationships, so I'd definitely recommend it if you haven't seen it. It's on netflix.
