Clerks II
Yesterday, when they were forecasting 112 degrees (44 C) in my neck of the woods, my air conditioner started making scary grinding noises, so I decided to turn it off for a while and spend the day at the movies.
I've been somewhat excited about Clerks II for a long time. I have a profound love of the first movie because I went to college in New Jersey, and the first film captured New Jerseyness so well that I felt like I actually knew some of the characters in it. It definitely gave me the Kevin Smith love, though I haven't actually seen all his films. (I love Dogma and Chasing Amy and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, but I never made it through Mall Rats and I haven't seen Jersey Girl).
I thought "Clerks II" was very enjoyable. Like all Kevin Smith movies, it had some fantastic dialogue, especially in the realm of geekdom (I loved the Star Wars v. LOTR debate) and sex ("you never go ass to mouth!"), and I loved both the recurring characters and the new ones. I especially loved Elias, the Christian transformer geek with the fear of pussy trolls, and Becky (Rosario Dawson), Dante's manager.
I wish the actors playing Dante and Randal were better actors, though. (Am I remembering correctly that they were amateurs when Kevin Smith first cast them?) Some of the scenes between Dante and Becky, especially, were painful to watch because the actor playing Dante is *so* bad--I felt like I was watching really awful community theater. I think his bad acting was especially apparent because Rosario Dawson is so good, and this was a big problem because their relationship is supposed to be the heart of the movie.
Still, if you like Kevin Smith, you'll probably love this. It was definitely hilarious and worth seeing.
