Comments on Veronica Mars, "Rat Saw God," behind the cut. I loved how this episode made you re-evaluate many of last years' villains!
I loved many things in this episode, but I think especially how the viewer comes out of it with a very different view of Abel Koontz, Clarence Wiedman, and possibly even Aaron Echolls. OK, not so much Aaron Echolls, but the other two.
I actually felt hugely sorry for Abel Koontz, who in trying to make a better life for his daughter actually destroyed her. (I wonder if we're going to find out more about the mysterious--what was it, Belgian?--or if that storyline is done). In fact, I completely approved of Veronica lying to him at the end, though I also have this terrible feeling that he won't actually die in a day or two and will be confronted with the truth.
But even more amazing than my sympathy for Abel is my shift towards Clarence Wiedman. When he confronted her in the hotel room, I was so angry at him that I wanted her to actually kill him. I had heard there was some sort of big reveal in this episode, and thought that might be it. But by the time she and Wiedman were conspiring to good cop/bad cop Amelia's boyfriend, I was totally loving them together and wishing they'd partner up further in future cases. I can appreciate what a badass he is as long as he isn't putting my girl in jeopardy, and in fact I thought they had interesting chemistry together. (Though I hope this isn't foreshadowing a future in which Veronica becomes as shady as Wiedman!!! It is interesting how much they're contrasting her continuing lies with Keith's integrity this season--I suspect they're going somewhere with that).
I also really loved the Aaron/Logan scene. Ok, Aaron is self-serving and incapable of real love, but in his own head he loves Logan, I think, and at least at this point he was giving Logan good advice. As was Cliff--can I just say how much I love this show, that they make minor characters like Cliff so fun and interesting? As far as I'm concerned, Cliff could get his own show and I'd watch it, he's such a good character; I especially love his banter with Veronica.
Also of the good: Logan, still trying to be a hard-ass when arrested, but unable to hide his woobie shell. But never fear, Logan resists woobification by evicting Weevil's grandmother! Damn, that's cold. And it's a tribute to the acting and writing that Logan can pull shit like that and have us still like him.
Finally, I love Logan and Duncan living together, and not just for all the slash that it is inspiring even as I type this, but also because of the fun and interesting ways it will complicate both of their relationships with Veronica.
