Things that make me happy

#3: Work project from hell is FINISHED!! YAY!!!!

#2: I have a myspace page under a different name and Steve DeKnight just friended me back. Yes, I am a geek, because that makes me totally happy. Plus it means I can give him Smallville comments, since he's taken to only accepting comments from friends.

#1: The wonderful and amazing [livejournal.com profile] mskatej finished my birthday fic, and it is everything I hoped for and more! Just so you know, I requested twisted Mionel and/or Clex slave fic. And DAMN. She did BOTH. She wrote me a long, plotty, twisted, psychologically complex, and smutty story called The Hero of yesterday , which you should all definitely go read, and give her feedback, because she is the AWESOMEST!! Thank you Kate, you goddess of porn!

I have a bullet with his name on it. Sorry--I can't 'yay!' with you on this one--but the other things are great! *G*

Ok--why?

I've pretty much liked all the episodes he wrote of SV (except Ageless, but he wanted zombies, not a baby, so I don't blame him for that). And I don't know specifically what he did on Buffy/Angel, but I have never blamed individual writers for specific episode things--is it something from Angel you hate him for?

[identity profile] bop-radar.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
Ageless? Thirst? Spell? Totally my top three most hated SV eps. Tomb wasn't a fav either...

I was indifferent to him as an Angel/Buffy writer--he was unspectacular.

But it's actually his smug attitude and MySpace page that really irks me the most, and some of the comments he's made about the show. Other people find Al&Miles infuriating--it's SDK that is as fingers on a chalkboard to me...

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm. Well, it's not like he actual conceived the plotlines of any of those stories. (I'm looking forward to the "Thirst" commentary on the DVD--apparently the network basically asked them to write a Halloween episode, and Almiles think it was their silliest episode of the season. Though I thought it was actually kind of fun, myself). And "Ageless" bears no resemblance to the script he submitted with zombies--he talked about that in his discussion on TWOP, I think. I agree that Tomb could have been better, and Spell was definitely not the highlight of season 4.

However, he also wrote "Mortal, "Splinter" and "Lockdown," which are three of my favorite episodes this season. I think the longer he's been on the show, the more he has improved.

See, I give him props for his ability to keep his cool on myspace in the face of a coordinated Clana offensive that was really obnoxious and over the top. And I like getting to hear about behind-the-scenes stuff, so I like reading his blog.

[identity profile] bop-radar.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
I just find he's got a bad strike rate. I did loooove Splinter, but I didn't find its greatness was in the writing so much as in the performances and the visual. But then, that's true of much of SV, not just SDK's work.

I guess part of my frustration is also that many people seem happy to fangirl him while slagging off Al&Miles. Not you, obviously! But I guess I think he's not the shining light that many people seem to hold him up to be. And I think Al&Miles deserve a fairer go. I just find fandom weird in where it throws its loyalties...

As I say, it really comes down not only to me finding his work average-to-below-par overall, but also to me finding his personality very grating. One of my irks with him regarding his discussions of the show is that he shows such obvious character bias--to Chloe over Lois, for example. I couldn't stick it out checking his blog--every second comment riled me. I'm glad to hear vicariously that he dealt with the Clana offensive calmly. Kudos to him for that--I just think I'll keep my distance and thereby my own serenity. As Becky would say, you can read it for me! ;-)

According to imdb, he also wrote Onyx, which was one of only two season 4 episodes I really *love*.

But you know, different strokes and all that. I wouldn't say that I fangirl him, precisely. It's just the celebrity thing: ooh, writer who worked on all three of my favorite shows has friended me! Sorry if that makes me shallow.

[identity profile] bop-radar.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
:-) Not at all--it makes you human, and me contrary! I'd be very excited if it was anyone but him. If Al&Miles friended me, for example, I'd be dancing around the room and would never shut up about it.

Me <<---weird fangirl

*g*

You enjoy it, hon!

Me too! I'm definitely looking forward to the commentary, if only as a form of catharsis. I think the words they used to describe Thirst were 'Living Hell'. Hee! That was sooo my experience of it too--I'm with AL&Miles there--although I remember that week that I was in the minority, with many people enjoying it. If they started bringing out amusing commentaries on all of SDK's clangers, I'd probably start to like him!

And Run :D

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)
But also "Onyx."

P.S> I love your icon.

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 02:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh I loved Onyx. Two Lex's! Lex with the Greenk ring *sighs* The only part I wished they had done more with, was good Lex. I would have loved seeing him be this really sweet nerdy guy, and bonding with the Kent's. Instead it was mostly just about Alexander. Maybe it could have been a two-parter :D

And thanks! RavishMe on FF designed a gorgeous LJ size icon of it, but stupid LJ decided the size was too big :/

I don't know why we can have the animation sizes we like for our own paid LJ's, but anyway

Your request was genious and the fic was great!

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 02:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks, though really Kate deserves the credit, not me.

[identity profile] anoel.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh I can't wait to read that fic!

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
It's very good!
