Heroes 1.06
I am watching Friday Night Lights as I type this, and I can see why people on my f-list love it: really interesting characters, good dialogue, very realistic settings. But I just can't see myself loving this show enough to give up sleep for it (which seems to be my only choice these days for TV viewing.) Someday work will not suck like a giant hosebeast and I'll be able to watch more than 3 hours of TV a week, but this is not that TV season.
Meanwhile, Heroes continues to make me happy.
Well, at least it does when it's not scaring the crap out of me. NIKI! She can't be dead, right? But even if she's alive, holy crap. I had suspected pretty much everything Ikin confessed, but it was something else to hear it all confirmed. I'm really curious, now, as to how Ikin is connected to Niki: why does she hate D.L. when Niki so clearly loves him? Ikin isn't just the complete personality reversal of Niki, or she wouldn't be concerned about Micah's welfare. Is she just the sum of Niki's negative impulses? I loved that she confirmed that she's the one who does what has to be done.
I really liked D.L., too--he was much more sympathetic than I imagined, given Niki's description of him, and I really liked his desire to prove himself innocent. That made the fight at the end more heartbreaking. And poor Micah! I feel so bad for him.
Meanwhile, Mr. Bennet gets more interesting and complex with every episode. Is it possible that he's really not a bad guy? I loved the confirmation that he was working with Eden; I knew she was working for someone, though I honestly though it was Sylar. (Heh. I still like my theory that she IS Sylar, mostly because I detest her, and I think Mohinder definitely deserves a better love interest).
And like everyone else, I'm sure, I guessed that Claire parents were fake. Those scenes were wonderful, though, as were Claire's scene with her clearly gay friend (I mean, "come out of the closet to your parents"? Clearly gay.)I wonder if Mr. Bennett knows that Mrs. Bennett is actually revealing information to Claire, however. And I'm curious to see what's going to happen now that Mr. Bennett knows the prediction about the cheerleader.
As usual, though, I thought the heart of this episode was the Hiro/Ando show. Does anyone else think that perhaps Hiro *has* already altered time, and that him tripping and falling and causing Ando to look under the table and get scared by the gun *was* a product of his future self changing things?
I was stunned to find it was Ikin that almost killed them, though. And I loved how remorseful Hiro was, and how Ando comforted him with his own arguments about heroes being on a journey, and that they don't start with the end (or else there wouldn't be a movie! Hee!) I love their little geeky dialogues about heroism a hundred times more than Mohinder's dorky evolution voiceovers. When Hiro reassured Ando that he was on a hero's journey, too, because you don't need superpowers to be a hero, I did a little joy dance. Though I am getting worried about Ando's potential lifespan, if he hangs out with these folks.
Oh, and I forgot the line about the sword. "I have a sword!" I think I need to make that icon asap.
YAY! I love this show so much.

Elfgirl's name is Eden? Wow.

Oh, this just caused me to have a geek attack and look up the etymology of all the names on Heroes. I couldn't find specific definitions for Hiro (Hiroshi means generous, but I couldn't find Hiro by itself) or Ando (the word means "relief" if the online Japanese to English dictionary I found can't be trusted), but here are the other names on the show:
Niki: Depending on its derivation, it either means "victory of the people" (if From Nichola--though Nike by itself is just victory) or "true image" (if taken from Veronica).
Mohinder: great Indra (and Indra is the Vedic god of thunder, patron of warriors)
Claire: Clear, bright, famous
Michah: who is like God
Matthew: Gift of God
Nathan: giver (or if it's short for Nathaniel, God has given)
Peter: rock
Bennett: from "Benedict," meaning Blessed
Did I miss anyone? I wonder how much this is symbolic.

More tomorrow, because I really need to be in bed, but the above-quoted bit caught my eye. Ando and Hiro had that very deliberate conversation about a "do-over" and there are two ways (at a minimum) to look at that conversation:
1. It's foreshadowing of something to come. There is a moment coming up where Hiro will have a chance to stop and reverse time to undo something that shouldn't have happened/has an awful outcome. Best guess as to what that is? Claire's death. Since Hiro (and Ando) now know of the prophecy (for lack of a better word).
2. It's a nod to what's already happened. In other words, the current timeline we're in is the do-over. Future!Hiro must come from the world without Claire; he came back in time to deliver that message because he already knows what happens if she doesn't survive. Now is the second chance.
Back with more tomorrow (well, technically later today).

That's what I'm thinking too. He's obviously doing something questionable, but it seems (to me, at least) that he's got more interests in Claire than just her being a lab rat. I thought I saw some concern for her when he heard the "save the cheerleader" message. Not concern for whatever project he's involved with, but for Claire's well-being. Maybe I'm just thinking out-there because I'm almost certain the writers are going to surprise us, but really, he could end up being good. Or at least doing something good while remaining relatively ambiguous overall.

I LOVE your icon, by the way.

And YES! I've always disliked Eden! I thought I was being just evil thinking that she was Sylar. Glad to know I'm not alone. So I wasn't really surprised that she was working with Bennett. I guess we really don't know if they're bad guys or good guys at this point - I'm still leaning bad, or at least in the darker end of the gray spectrum.
I can't look at D.L. and not see Nam-Ek. SV is just too ingrained in my fannish little brain.
I wonder if Ikin is just ultra-paranoid as well as sociopathic? Irrational concerns heightened? Or, maybe she knows something about D.L. we don't yet.
Poor Ando, I'm very worried about his days being numbered too. Rough crowd.

Yes, I'm sure it's deliberate, and it's one of the things I really love about this show.
I think it would be really fun if we found out that *Eden* is the real villain and has been playing Mr. Bennett this whole time. But I'm also ok with both of them being villains.
See, I can't help looking at D.L. and seeing Forrest from Buffy (which is also what I saw when he was Nam-Ek on SV). But I like how sympathetic he was in this episode.
It would be interesting if it turned out Ikin knew something about D.L. that we don't. I wonder how long Ikin has existed?

As Ikin she has superhuman strength, speed and agility. Does she have those powers as Niki? I'm definitely intrigued by her story and I hope to god she's not dead.
I also liked DL a lot, and his walking through walls shtick is awesome.
I love Claire's gay best friend! He basically came out to her in this episode and she was all teasing and sweet and omg they are so cute together. I want an icon with those two in it.
My only complaint about the episode is that it didn't feature Nathan. :*(

Somebody had a theory I read a while back about Sylar actually being Peter after he encountered Ikin and absorbed her power. I like that theory, though I'm less inclined to buy it these days. Maybe Ikin *is* Sylar? She certainly has the ruthlessness, and if she thought it would somehow benefit Micah that she went around killing all the heroes, maybe she'd do it?
I agree with you that it's hard to see Niki becoming a hero at this point--*how* many people has Ikin killed by now? Upwards of 15? Though it's certainly an interesting moral dilemma she's in. If you found out you had an evil alter ego who was a mass murderer, what would you do--kill yourself? But she has to take care of Micah, so she can't really do that. I'm really intrigued to see where they can possibly go from here with her character.
And Claire's gay best friend is the cutest.
With luck we will get lots of Nathan next week!

OH! I never thought of that!!!! That is entirely possible!!!!
This show OWNS me!

Hmmm, hmmm. I like it lots, obviously Hiro greatest because well, he's the only one doing anything. Catalysts are much more interesting than people that hang around waiting for phonecalls. Oooh and Clare daddy, I just love because I still have no idea of his motivations or his place in any of it, which is pleasing to me.

I love Hiro. And Claire. And Claire's dad--I agree with you, I like that we don't really know his motivations right not.
