February recsfest 2007

So some of you may remember that last February I did a month-long smutrecs fest (now living in my tags as "February recsfest recs," after some work people found my lj). That was a massive project involving SV Clex recs, SV recs with other pairings, and also recs from past fandoms--basically, 10 years worth of saved-up recs from all my time as a lurker. There's no way I can completely replicate this year, since I don't have the quantity of material to draw on.

Still, I wanted to do something to celebrate February, the month of Valentine's Day (not to mention the month when those of us in the Northern Hemisphere could really use some heat). This years recsfest will be entirely Clexcentric: all of the stories will be Clex, though I'm not guaranteeing that all of them will be smutty. I will recommend a story (or occasionally several stories) by a different author every day this month. Many of these will be stories released in the past year.

So without further ado, here's my first recommendation for February:

[livejournal.com profile] svlurker (the artist formerly known as svlurker), I shatter .

I've recommended [livejournal.com profile] svlurker's writing before--specifically Come Back from San Francisco, a lovely bittersweet Clex piece which is possibly my favorite [livejournal.com profile] svlurker story because she wrote it FOR ME! ::Twirls giddily::

But really all of 69 Love Songs stories are wonderful, not simply because of their terrific characterization or their hot sex, but because [livejournal.com profile] svlurker is such a great prose stylist. In I Shatter , for example, I love how well she captures Lex's psychosis in the language she uses and the very structure of the paragraphs themselves, as you can see in her opening paragraph:

The car is speeding towards me but then Clark is there, and he collects the car around himself like a shawl then throws it off. He looks at me and there’s something in my eyes but before I can say anything I’m in his arms and wind whips past us, I can’t see what’s happening, I think I hear Julian crying again and I try to tell Clark but can’t hear my own voice. Everything stops and we’re not in Metropolis anymore, it’s a town with palm trees, and I can’t tell if I’m awake or not. Clark tells me we need to call Toby. I say we have to go back and get Julian. “Focus, Lex,” Clark says, and he grips my shoulders and stares into my eyes. His eyes are intensely green and I focus. “You’ve been drugged. We have to get you to Toby. What’s Toby’s phone number?” So I tell him, and Clark uses a pay phone that’s suddenly right there next to us, and some people walk by with a baby that isn’t Julian and there’s a soft breeze on my skin and I think I smell the ocean. And I think Clark isn’t human. And I’m pretty sure I’m awake, or as sure as I’ve been lately, and then Clark hangs up the phone and pulls me into an alley and wraps his arms around me, and I’m about to laugh because there’s a part of me that even now is thinking Jesus, finally! except I don’t get the chance to say that because the wind whips up again and I’m pressed against Clark’s chest and maybe he’s trying to kill me too but if he is I like his method better than my father’s. Then we’re outside Toby’s house in Metropolis and Clark sets me down on the stoop and rings the bell and nothing happens. “It’s not safe here,” I say, and Clark says “It’s the best we can do,” and that doesn’t make it any better, and nobody answers the door and I say “There’s nobody home” and Clark says “I’ll try around back” and when he gets down the steps the door opens and I get shot and die.

This has quickly become my favorite post-"Shattered" AU.

I will confess, though, that I had a hard time deciding between "I Shatter" and Epitaph for my heart , a gorgeous little dagger in the heart, set in season 6, in which Lex is able to effortlessly manipulate Clark into bed (or more accurately, onto the couch in the barn) by taunting him about Lana. Pitch perfect season 6 characterizations, and very hot as well.

Please note, by the way, that the "69 Love Songs" stories are not part of a series (except insofar as they all relate thematically to Magnetic Fields Songs); they're all free-standing, independent stories, so you don't have to read any of the others to understand an individual story.

Edited to add: And wow, she has a new project for the next two weeks which sounds awesome: go here to find out more.

You have just made my day in so many ways I can't even count them. I was all excited to see that you're doing February recs again, even before I clicked on the cut-tag. And now I'm all blushing and flattered and gleeful.

Thank you for this. :-)

You're welcome. But honestly, you deserve lots of flattery--you're an amazing writer and I'm so glad you've been lured over to the fanfic-writing side of the force.

okay, wow that excerpt is something else. I've never read any of these fics and I can tell I'll be eating them up. Damn, I love a good effective first person fic. Or just something that captures the emotional state of the characters in the style of the writing. Thank you for sharing this rec!

You are very welcome--you're really in for a treat if you haven't read any of her stories before.

Great rec! This is one of my all-time favorite fics ever.

Thanks! And I agree, it's a fantastic story.
