For Tanya Huff/Blood Ties fans
I thought I'd do a little pimping for "Blood Ties," since I think it's going to be my new guilty pleasure show. For those of you who haven't read the books by Tanya Huff, the series is about Vicki Nelson, a former cop who had to leave the force because of a medical condition affecting her vision. She's now a P.I., and as the series starts she gets her first of many cases investigating paranormal events. In the course of this, she encounters Henry Fitzroy, vampire and graphic novelist. (In the books he's a romance novelist, which I think is more fun, but oh well.) She also sometimes works with her former partner, Michael Celluci. The show is airing on Lifetime at 10 p.m. Sundays (I believe that's 10 p.m. Eastern time). I would not say this show is great art, but it is a lot of fun, and if you like cheesy vampire shows you will like this one.

If you missed the first episode, you can download it from iTunes. The first hour is free (the link for that can be found on the Lifetime website here in the top left hand corner of the page), so you can watch it and decide whether or not you want to pay to download the second hour of the two-hour series premiere. If you want to find out more about the episode before downloading it, I collected a whole bunch of reviews of the episode .

Thanks for the links.

I'm not sure how much the show will be like the books, really, since only the premiere is actually being based on a novel. Apparently the plan is to do a different book as the season opener every year, assuming the show lasts long enough to do that.

I imagined both Vicki and Celucci as older, I guess. But this is teevee, so they have to be prettier, I guess.

I haven't gotten to see it yet darned working to earn money, but I am delighted that they've made a series I am v. fond of into a television show.
Hopefully it's going to be popular and we will get to see a lot of these characters. And you know, this will likely lead to a lot more discussion of these characters, which I think is great.

or Henry/Tony/Mike) stories, dammit!

And yes, absolutely, fanfic. All of those combinations sound wonderful. ::g::

It's shorter than I remember--I thought there was at least one story from the Blood books, too. There are a couple of other Tanya Huff universes represented at Yuletide, though: her Fires Stone stories are here: http://yuletidetreasure.org/archive/fandom_tanya_huff__the_fires_stone.html and her Keeper's chronicles story is here: http://yuletidetreasure.org/archive/29/theparting.html

There is a shocking lack of Mike/Henry/Vicki fic I see. ::is shocked at fandom:: This needs to be corrected.

I'm thinking Henry as a graphic novelist is more interesting to watch while romance novelist? Not so much. Plus, graphic artist has plot integration potential.

Re: my icon winks at your icon
I'm really interested to see tonight's Blood Ties because apparently their plans are that only the first ep of every season (assuming it should survive so long) will actually be based on the books, so now we get to see what the show's writers will do with the premise.
Re: my icon winks at your icon
The Dresden Files (http://www.scifi.com/dresden/) is basically Sci-Fi's version of Blood Ties, i.e., a live-action adaptation of a beloved series of fantasy/supernatural novels.
Harry is a talented and powerful wizard (in the most recent episode, he channeled lightning to repel a demon) who occasionally works with the Chicago PD to solve crimes that have some element of the unexplained/unnatural about them. He also freelances; people can hire him if they have a problem that requires the services of a wizard (seriously, it says "Wizard" on his front door, business cards and phone book ad). Harry is on probation with the wizarding world's High Council because five years ago he used black magic to kill his uncle -- also a powerful wizard -- in self-defense. Even though it was in self-defense, he still broke one of the high laws of wizarding. His probation is complicated by the fact that the temptation to do black magic is still strong for him thanks to the years he spent being tutored in the black arts by his uncle.
When Harry works with the Chicago PD, his liaison is Lt. Connie Murphy (in the books, her name is Karinn). Murphy heads the Special Cases Unit; they deal with the really weird cases. Murphy's a really good cop and while she's somewhat skeptical right now because she hasn't personally encountered the supernatural, she does understand that there are some things that just can't be explained by the ordinary rules of the universe. She and Dresden have excellent chemistry.
Harry's other regular companion is Bob, a ghost whose energy 'resides' in his own skull. Hundreds of years ago, Bob, also a wizard, broke something like 15 wizarding laws at once (for the sake of love, of course). As a result he was disemboweled, tortured to death and his spirit sentenced to an eternity of service to whoever owns his skull. Right now, that's Harry. Bob is fabulously bitchy with Harry, but he also provides a lot of useful magical advice when Harry's working on cases.
I've never read the books, so I judge the show entirely on its own merits. The case files could stand to be smarter and more interesting, but the main cast (Paul Blackthorne, Valerie Cruz and Terrence Mann) is really appealing, as are a couple of the recurring guest-stars. For me, it's a good companion to BT.
