Smallville: Combat

Um, I must say, that was NOT what I was expecting from this episode.

Dear Almiles, are you DELIBERATELY trying to alienate all the hard core fans? Last week you drove away all the Lana and Clana haters and the Lexana lovers, and this week I'm sure you just drove off all the hardcore Superman fans. Justifiably. Superman doesn't kill people. I don't know if you knew that or not, but it's KIND OF A BIG DEAL. One of the things that separates him from other types of heroes, in fact. And yes, Clark has probably caused deaths before, but not deliberately--and if that wasn't a deliberate killing, than neither was Lex killing the doctor last week. True, that Zoner had killed a bunch of people and posed a danger to society, but Superman doesn't kill people. And the fact that you had him feel a little guilty at the end? Does NOT justify it.

Honestly, even something this egregious isn't going to cause me to bail from this show, because I am the Pollyanna of Smallville, but they're not even trying now, are they? I thought Lana and Martha were the ones who were supposed to go dark this season, not Clark. (Though in the 3000 word essay on "Promise" I wrote this afternoon and will post in two parts tomorrow I speculated that Clark was, in fact, regressing from the heroic path, and I guess this is definite sign of regression.)

Dear Clark: STOP KILLING PEOPLE. This is not heroic behavior--I don't care how mad you are at Lex.

Dear Martha, thank you for calling Clark on his behavior, but actually I think you let him off the hook a little too easily. Yay, he feels guilty: big whoop. I'm glad that you're reminding him of his humanity, but that boy needs hit upside the head with a big clue stick.

Dear Lois: You rock hardcore, beyond the telling. Big props for figuring out the location of the fight club all on your own. Bigger props for pulling out the red leather catsuit, pretending to be a stripper, and hitting on the security lady. And way to show off your fighting skills! Your only error, and it was an understandable one, was stopping to gloat afterward. I am officially in love with you now, just so you know, and I hope people are already writing the hot femslash. (But Almiles? Having Lois hit on the hot chick--or pretend to, whatever--does NOT compensate for having Superman deliberately kill someone).

Dear Lex: I can't decide if you caused Lana to miscarry with that drink (I'd currently give that about a 49% possibility) or you're covering up something even worse and the miscarriage was fake (I'm guessing about a 50% possibility--with 1% being the possibility that that drink had nothing to do with Lana's collapse) , but either way, that was pretty cold. Did you do it just because she's not putting out? I was a little sympathetic to you last week, after the way your father manipulated things so that you got what you most wanted in a way that guaranteed you would never enjoy it, but this week my sympathies were entirely with Lana.

Dear Lana: you look beautiful in black, and I was going to say that Lex is definitely going to figure out you were coerced into the wedding if you don't start faking better, but in some ways this miscarriage is to your advantage. Not that I want to be harsh--I genuinely felt bad for you, and you actually made me cry a little. Hanging out in the nursery mourning is wonderfully sad and creepy and in character, and gives you a great excuse to avoid Lex. (And it also seems reminiscent of that amazing OT4 story by romanyg that I hope is still going to be finished even though it's been jossed).

Dear Chloe, thank you for speculating that research is your mutant power, because that means it definitely *isn't*, which is what I've been saying for a while, nyah nyah nyah. (/ inner-5-year-old)

Dear Lois, I just feel the need to repeat that you were completely wonderful and hot and kickass and awesome and FEMSLASHY. Thank you very much for redeeming this episode for me. You and grief-stricken semi-creepy Lana were definitely the highlight.

I was shocked by Clark killing Titan as well. Totally flabbergasted, more like. Although after last week, watching Clark get smeared all over the pavement was strangely therapeutic.

THANK YOU! I just collected about 20 reviews for [livejournal.com profile] eat_crow, and nobody mentioned that part at all, and I was pretty darn surprised that I was the only one commenting on that.

[identity profile] ladydreamer.livejournal.com 2007-03-23 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
Um, you collected mine. And I did. Superman's a killer.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-03-23 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry I missed that. The fact is, once I see a lot of Lana hate in a review, I generally backspace out, but I didn't mean to misrepresent you!

[identity profile] ladydreamer.livejournal.com 2007-03-23 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's understandable. I should have placed my rant at the end or something where it couldn't poison the rest.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-03-23 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I feel bad, because I like reading what you have to say--it's just my ability to read attacks on characters I like really varies with my emotional state. Sometimes I can be very dispassionate and read along and go, well, that's a good point, etc. etc., and sometimes it makes me very upset.

And especially when I'm collecting for eat_crow, I mainly just skim things to make sure I'm warning for spoilers, because otherwise I can get kind of cranky when everyone hates an episode I love, and then I end up getting into arguments I really don't want to get into. I'd rather keep SV fandom as my happy place, not run around telling people that their equally passionate and well-thought-out opinions are WRONG WRONG WRONG, but when I'm cranky I'm liable to do that anyway, against my better judgment.

[identity profile] bittermint.livejournal.com 2007-03-23 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
I mentioned it in my capsule review of the ep, which I just posted. It really is too bad they felt the need to do this. The ep was panty-wetting, cracktastic fun up till that point.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-03-23 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'll go check it out.

[identity profile] par-avion.livejournal.com 2007-03-23 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
Lois was femslashy? Damn. I missed that part. I only half-saw the last 15 minutes or so.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-03-23 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, there was this female security guard, Athena (who I think is one of the other WWF guest stars this week?) that Lois totally hit on to get access to the building--Lois was masquerading as a stripper and offered to get Athena passes to her show. I really thought they were going to kiss, for a second.

Hopefully someone will upload those bits on YouTube or someplace.

[identity profile] kantayra.livejournal.com 2007-03-23 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
Lois is seriously rocking my world. It's a strange feeling, yet I've learned to embrace it, with all the femslashy subtext implied therein. :P

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-03-23 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
I am completely in love with her this season! She's already got the attitude and the martial arts skills down, and she's *totally* growing into iconic Lois' journalistic skills. And she's just always fun to watch--this show desparately needs some lightheartedness now and then, and she really supplies it.

[identity profile] ladydreamer.livejournal.com 2007-03-23 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know what to make of Clark right now. At all. I enjoyed the episode, but was shocked at the plot point. AlMiles hate their fans. The Big Eight are psychos. I bet in this AU Wonder Woman is out somewhere typing guys up, having her way with them, then killing them and stuffing the bodies in trashcans outside of S&M clubs.

Lois, oh, Lois. As far as I'm concerned, she's bi or queer, and that makes me sooo happy. Her eps are fun, and we need sparks of fun to break up the angst.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-03-23 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
Are the Big 8 the Justice League guys?

(And is it sad that I'd actually like to read that Wonder Woman AU?)

Yeah, I definitely got a bi vibe off Lois in that scene, which was very happy-making. She seemed like she was doing more than faking it, to me. (Now if only *Clark* had to go undercover in a situation where he had to hit on a hot guy....)

[identity profile] ladydreamer.livejournal.com 2007-03-23 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's the Justice League. I couldn't name them all for you, but Martian Manhunter killed the bone eater in Static. (Hee hee, evil Wonder Woman would be kinky...)

I've been trying to argue for awhile that Lois had the hots for Martha and vice versa... but they haven't interacted much this season. :( She definitely seemed to have no qualms about flirting with a girl! (I'm sure Clark undercover has been written in fanfiction somewhere...)

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-03-23 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
Lois and Martha is all very well, but someone SERIOUSLY needs to write Lois/evil Wonder Woman. I mean, she has a lasso!

I'm sure Clark has pretended to be gay many times in fic, but I want to see him pretending to be gay on the show. (Yeah, I know, I may as well just ask for a pony. Or character continuity.)

[identity profile] ladydreamer.livejournal.com 2007-03-23 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
*scoff* I bet Martha has rope around the barn... Seriously, though, Lois boinks so many of the other JLA folk, why WOULDN'T she do evil Wonder Woman? She marries Lex in some continuities.

(Yeah, I know, I may as well just ask for a pony. Or character continuity.)
lol. Aww. They could do it. It wouldn't be hard... or he could be exposed to Pink K. :D! I've worked out some of the craziest crack plots with Pink K. But then he wouldn't be pretending... it would just give turn his Red K horn for girls into a Pink K horn for guys.

[identity profile] skuf.livejournal.com 2007-03-23 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
Ahh, episode reviews make my head hurt (not being able to see the eps here); I just cannot fathom why they're writing the show this way - why, WHY :o( ?

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-03-23 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, actually being able to see it does help in some ways; the pretty overcomes the power of the stupid.

[identity profile] bop-radar.livejournal.com 2007-03-23 10:58 am (UTC)(link)
Hee! I was calm about him killing Titan. He's an alien, right? In warped SV ethics, I assumed that this gave Clark an 'out'. That it's not as bad as killing a human. But I adore your flipout, nontheless.

I just feel the need to repeat that you were completely wonderful and hot and kickass and awesome and FEMSLASHY. Thank you very much for redeeming this episode for me. You and grief-stricken semi-creepy Lana were definitely the highlight.
They were definitely the highlights for me too. I was very 'meh' about this episode. Though it was yummy source for vidders. Well, Lois was! And so was Clark--he looked gorgeous getting beat up.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-03-23 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
So alien Zoners for Clark = vampires for Buffy? :D I guess that could be, but I still find it objectionable.

And yes, this episode was definitely full of hotness, if nothing else.

[identity profile] c-mantix.livejournal.com 2007-03-23 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe this'll console you a bit.

To carry the vampire/Buffy - alien/Superman analogy further, I figured that the fight with Titan was essentially a metaphor and Clark was in fact beating the crap out of himself.

As I've recently learned, I'm also a Pollyanna;-p

Also, I've never been into women, but if I were, I'd be into Lois. ♥ Lois! LOL.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-03-23 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, interesting argument, that Clark was beating up himself.

Oh, and speaking of Buffy references--what the hell was up with that stake Titan had? *Clark* wasn't a vampire!

[identity profile] c-mantix.livejournal.com 2007-03-23 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
True. But who can blame Titan for being confused. When I see a very hot guy in black leather, I immediately think "Angelus"! LOL.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-03-23 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee hee hee!

*Needs more icons from the Buffy/Angelverse*

[identity profile] bop-radar.livejournal.com 2007-03-24 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I think it IS objectionable. I don't really condone it either, I was just focussed on other things in the ep.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-03-23 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, some people over at [livejournal.com profile] latxcvi's journal have pointed out that Superman did kill Darkseid, so the ban on Superman killing is perhaps not as complete as I thought it was.

[identity profile] preciosatt.livejournal.com 2007-03-23 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sure you just drove off all the hardcore Superman fans. Justifiably. Superman doesn't kill people.

And that's true. About Superman. But Clark isn't Superman. I remember seeing an interview with TW where he talked about SV's Clark Kent vs. Superman and he said that he wasn't that person yet. The whole point of SV was to show a young man's journey and struggle to become that iconic figure. To become someone better. So yes, Cleak killed someone (who by the way would have totally killed him) but it was Clark who killed him because SV's Clark isn't even close to being Superman just yet and he still struggles with who he is and his powers and all that.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-03-23 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Look, I totally get that Clark isn't Superman yet, and that he's on a journey and will make a lot of mistakes along the way. But to me, there's a real difference between making a mistake and deliberately doing something that goes against everything Superman stands for. I mean, the whole reason Lex Luthor is still alive in the comicsverse is that Superman doesn't kill his enemies even when they themselves are killers. And I really do think there's a difference between, say, Clark acting like kind of a jerk sometimes, or going after his ex on her wedding day, or other things that are somewhat self-centered but understandable in the context of immaturity, and actually killing someone.

I don't blame Clark for this so much as I blame the producers: they're cheating. If Lex killing the doctor last week is supposed to signal his further descent into evil (as I think it was), then Clark should get a pass on killing someone in basically the same way--with his bare hands, even if the outcome in both cases is "accidental"--just because that person was a killer himself.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-03-23 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Um, I meant to say Clark *shouldn't* get a pass on killing someone in basically the same way.

[identity profile] isilweth.livejournal.com 2007-03-23 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
*loves on your letters*

Clark's killing the Zoner had me going WTF!?, too. But, there is a precedent (IIRC, he killed Comics!Zod.) Only, afterward it drove him a bit mad. Having killed was killing him. He had to go away for awhile to pull himself back together. It wasn't just, 'Well, gee, I feel a bit guilty, Mom'. I think they're going somewhere with this, though, if only because Clark's struggled with all the corporeal Zoners and all of them have ended up dead.

*loves on your letters again because they are awesome*

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-03-23 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks!!

The fact that there is comics precedent for Clark killing makes it a little less egregious, I guess--and I suppose he has killed Zoners before, I just haven't been paying that much attention--but I still wish they'd come up with another way for him to deal with them, because I really don't think the future Superman should run around killing people left and right.

Your icon is hilarious, btw.

[identity profile] isilweth.livejournal.com 2007-03-23 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Your welcome.

Your right, they need to come up with another way for Clark to deal with the corporeal Zoners. Now that he's feeling the guilt of it, he's got to look for another way. At least, I hope that's where they're going with this. *fingers crossed*

Thank you, I agree. It's one of [livejournal.com profile] duskwillow's icons.

But Titan isn't a person really. He's an evil alien who needed to die, and if Clark *hadn't* killed him, Titan would have carried on killing people. It made me a little uncomfortable, yes, but I think I'm okay with it because in this case the ends justified the means. IMO.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-03-24 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it was your discussion of the heroes your love--and how the real heroes never kill people--that I was thinking of when I watched the episode and helped fuel my outrage, so it's interesting that we have different readings of this. I've discussed this some more in the comments on other people's reviews, and lots of people have argued that Clark actually has killed other Zoners before, so there's precedent, plus in exceptional cases in the comics (like with Darkseid) he has killed then, too.

I agree that Titan needed to be stopped. I think they must be going somewhere with this plotline, though, because otherwise they could easily have found a way to let Clark send the Zoners back to the Phantom Zone.
