Are you friends with yourself?

This particular poll of randomosity was inspired (a) by [livejournal.com profile] toadstoolsmiles magnificent confidence in her own self-love (if you don't know what I'm talking about, go here and here) and (b) looking up a couple people's profiles today and noticing they had themselves friended.

[Poll #1043523]

And if you would friend yourself, assuming you were a different person friending the person you are now, why would you friend yourself? Please take this as an excuse to talk about how cool you are in the comments.

Self-praise: it's the next best thing to sex with your own clone!

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-08-22 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I would friend myself because I would want to read my awesome Smallville reviews. And also to read that one hilarious f-locked entry about my search for non-fanfic slavefic and how I ended up scarred for life.

[identity profile] myownghost.livejournal.com 2007-08-22 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
X would friend Y because Y has such nice friends. it'd be like joining a very congenial party.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-08-22 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww, that's a nice way of looking at it!

[identity profile] amandajane5.livejournal.com 2007-08-22 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I post pretty pictures of Tom Welling! Of course I would friend me!

Heh, like you had to ask.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-08-22 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course! I'm actually a little surprised at people who wouldn't friend themselves--if your posts are interesting enough to yourself to post them, wouldn't you want to read them? (Or in your case, stare at all the lovely eyecandy?)

[identity profile] kristiinthedark.livejournal.com 2007-08-22 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I am obsessed with CKR and I post pics of my boobs. I'd definitely friend me. *g*

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-08-22 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Seems like a good reason to me.

*Stares, mesmerized, at your icon.* That really is one of the loveliest shots of CKR I've ever seen.

[identity profile] ladydreamer.livejournal.com 2007-08-22 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
If I turned into a man for a day, I would be a transsexual, and very uncomfortable with that. I like my cunt just fine. Who wants a shotgun when you can have a semiautomatic? CLONESEX.

Also, I friended myself after an incident in which our now ex-roommate boys had no damn food in the house, because Mark spends all his money on video games and taco bell and Daniel is such a mooch that he doesn't own a freaken car (and he's scared of me so won't ask for it). So basically, Mark doesn't even have money for gas so they have no food. All three girls in our house posted "LOL THEY HAVE NO FOOD" at the same time. So I friended myself to get a screencap of the entries back to back on my flist.

LJ! Fun with passive aggression!

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-08-22 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Your icon! LOL!!!!

So you have no curiosity whatsoever about what it would be like to have a prostate gland? (And also a penis, but I'm actually more curious about the former).

I wondered about that once, if people were doing it to "up" their friends' number.

Someone then explained that it's easier to see one's own entries on their fpage rather than having to click back and forth between friends' and self-page.

So, yeah, I shamelessly upped my friends' count.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-08-22 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee! I don't think it's really shameless, though. I just didn't realize how widespread a practice it was.

I thought everyone friended themselves so they become a signpost on their flist. I post most days, and I use my entry as a way to figure out where other posts on my flist are. Does that make sense? I'm pretty sure people don't friend themselves just because they think they're awesome (even if they do think that).

I would totally friend me. My LJ is entertaining!

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-08-22 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, what a sensible reason to do it--though that, I imagine, works better for you since you post every day, whereas I don't. (I can usually remember that I've already read certain entries, though).

I didn't think people friended themselves for reasons of conceit--I assumed it was so they could see their own entries more easily. It was the second part of the poll that was the self-love part.

And yes, your LJ is totally entertaining! Everyone should friend you.

[identity profile] amandajane5.livejournal.com 2007-08-22 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, and I meant to say something about the friending yourself thing, I totally do it like Kate says, to keep track of the last time I posted - it makes it easier to figure out where to stop. *nods*

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-08-22 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, that makes a lot of sense. Though as I said to her upthread, I don't post daily, so it wouldn't work quite as well for me.

[identity profile] obursts.livejournal.com 2007-08-22 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
My answer's much like [livejournal.com profile] amandajane5's first. Except, replace Tom Welling with Michael Rosenbaum. Though I do also post pretty photos of Tom Welling on occasion...

I also friend myself to keep track of the posting.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-08-22 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Precisely! If you post stuff you're interested in, it is stuff you'd be interested in even if you weren't you.

Unless of course you were the evil Star Trek version of yourself, and had a beard and hated everything you now love. (Well, that's less evil Spock and more Bizarro, but you understand what I'm saying, right?)

And it never occurred to me that friending oneself helped keep track of posting. But my f-list is so big and I post so infrequently I think it's just easier to go to my "recent" page.

[identity profile] xtremeroswellia.livejournal.com 2007-08-22 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
LMAO. You know I always wondered when I saw people do that. Thanks for the poll! It was very amusing :D

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-08-22 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
You're welcome! I have to admit, I knew some people did it but I didn't realize it was so common.

[identity profile] the-rejection.livejournal.com 2007-08-22 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, maybe I should friend myself just to see how often I post and whether it should be less/more often. *g* Especially since I've been all artsy recently.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-08-22 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee! Yeah, but I do that just by looking at my recent entries page. I never knew that was a reason why people friended themselves.

[identity profile] pepperjackcandy.livejournal.com 2007-08-22 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd friend me because I'm all about the happy!Clex. And full of crack-based theories about SV.

And because I have an adorable son and an almost-as-adorable collection of four-footed family members.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-08-22 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Those sound like good reasons to me!

[identity profile] bittermint.livejournal.com 2007-08-22 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I probably wouldn't friend myself, because I drive myself insane. :P

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-08-22 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I'm sure you'd actually be very interested in your own posts--think of all the common interests you'd have with yourself!

I like my stories now so of course I would want to read them if I wasn't me. Interestingly, I might actually like them more if I wasn't me.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-08-22 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah, that reminds me of the poll [livejournal.com profile] bagheera_san did recently about whether people get turned on by the porn they write themselves or not.

[identity profile] roxymissrose.livejournal.com 2007-08-22 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd friend myself if I wasn't myself because sometimes I make myself laugh, so I'm assuming if I wasn't myself that I'd still laugh--unless....I'm only funny to myself---*GACK!*

*sits in corner consumed with paranoia and fear of self stalking...*

Dang...Sex with a clone, hunh? I knew I killed Lex's clone too soon. Rats. He could have grown a beard and had sex with Lex whilst conspiring with a bearded Clark from another dimension to *kill* Lex. After a threesome. Wow! that's something I haven't done in a while! Erm, story-wise, I mean. After this birthday, I've passed the age where threesomes are a possibility anymore. *sniffle*

Geez, I'm babbling all over your comments, sorry.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-08-22 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
If you want to read sex with clones AU versions of Lex and Clark, you should definitely go read [livejournal.com profile] astolat's latest story.

I didn't realize there was an age limit on threesomes! I think you should challenge that, really.

And everybody with a brain would friend you because you are always hilarious and entertaining and write REALLY HOT porn that is sometimes very scary. What's not to love?

[identity profile] slinkling.livejournal.com 2007-08-22 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd really never understood why people friended themselves, so reading the responses to this has been enlightening. Though I still don't think it's that difficult to click on my Recent Entries page to see my own posts. I tend to figure, if I'm looking at my friends page, it's because I want to see what other people have posted recently. I already know what *I've* posted.

The wording of your second question confused me completely. But if the question is, if I were somebody else, would I friend this Slinkling who isn't me? Sure. I make myself laugh. And I like my own writing, at least most of the time.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-08-22 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I honestly could NOT figure out how to word that question in a non-confusing way, though I knew the X and Y stuff wasn't helping, really. I also had no idea all the reasons people might friend themselves. LJ is just one big learning experience!

IMHO, everyone should friend you because you are teh awesome.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-08-23 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, exactly! I am baffled by people who say they wouldn't friend themselves.

[identity profile] serenography.livejournal.com 2007-08-22 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course I'd friend my other self. We have so much in common. :)

It's interesting to hear people's reasons for friending themselves. I did always wonder.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-08-23 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I had no idea people had so many different reasons for doing that.

[identity profile] bop-radar.livejournal.com 2007-08-22 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I am not at all cool so no, I would bore myself too much. *nods*

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-08-23 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, please. If you found (a) a fellow Lee lover who (b)also really loved Lois and (c)posted all kinds of amazing meta about BSG and Smallville and who also (d)made amazingly cool vids and (e) did fabulous vid recs, you KNOW you would friend her in a second. The fact that she also lived in Australia would be an additional point in her favor, I suspect. In fact, since she lives in your neighborhood and also has a dog, you could even go on walks together.

I friend myself as myself (at least I think I have in this journal, I definitely have in my RL one) because I've got my bookmarks on the friends page and everything is all right there. Also, I like looking at my icon when I re-read my own entries. I've got a journal on GJ for a Roleplaying site and you need the icons to even tell who's writing the post (well, you can usually tell, but it's first person and easier to tell with the icon).

I would friend myself as somebody else because I don't write much and when I do, I'm usually announcing a story update (or answering a quiz, and those are fun, too).

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-08-23 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, sure, that makes sense (though I see all that stuff on my "recent entries" page, too).

[identity profile] anoel.livejournal.com 2007-08-23 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
I talk about Vidding and like the best show IMO (The Office), why wouldn't I friend me? I may not be super interesting but I have a lot of fandoms so I'm sure something would connect.

I didn't get the friending yourself but I really like seeing how my entries look on my Flist so now I do it. Plus it's easy to see if someone has me friended or if I'm in a community because it's bolded.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-08-23 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I might now have to friend myself, because you're right, it *would* make it a lot easier to see if I'm a comm member or have someone friended.

[identity profile] skuf.livejournal.com 2007-08-23 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
I said yes on the latter, because I'd probably want to follow my meta (being all about the meta). But I bet I'd also think I was full of myself (and totally boring) gahahaha!

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-08-23 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL! I'm sure you'd find that your fascinating meta made it all worthwhile.

[identity profile] chimosa.livejournal.com 2007-08-23 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
I'm cool!! I'm also a little slow and easily confused...

*looks around*

*darts away*

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-08-23 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, you're definitely cool and ought to be friended!

[identity profile] sadface.livejournal.com 2007-08-23 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Everyone is determined to mock me this week.

>:(

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2007-08-23 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
It wasn't knocking, it was being supportive! At least one person who took my poll went and voted for the clone option in Kate's poll. Really, I wasn't trying to mock you.
