Dear Smallville fandom
I admit I've been unfaithful, dallying with other hot fandoms (especially SPN), but meeting with other Smallville fans at Escapade, and seeing all the new names pop up on the different SV comms, and reading posts like this one by
svmadelyn, make me remember how much I love this fandom. And really, the "ten stories I love (or love to reread) in Smallville fandom" really ought to be a meme, so here is my list of
Ten Eleven Smallville stories I love to reread:
Koi, A Nice Friendly Game (Clex). I actually ran into Koi at the convention and babbled incoherently to her about how much I love this story, and how it is probably my favorite piece of fanfic of all time. (That may someday be replaced by Gilgamesh, if it ever gets finished, but for now this story holds that title). Here is the wording of my original rec for this story, which probably can't be improved upon:
If I were forced, at gunpoint, to name my absolute favorite Smallville story, this is the one I would name. I love this story so much that I only let myself reread it a certain number of times a year, for fear I will wear it out and it won't still be fresh on a day when I really *need* to read it. I want to go live with this story and have its babies (and I don't ever *want* babies--but for this story I would have them). I sometimes feel, reading this story, that it has tapped directly into the pleasure center of my brain, and I have reached some higher state of consciousness while reading it.
This was an early Smallville story, and I fear that canon Lex has not proven to be as *smart* as this Lex, but otherwise this story is *perfect*. First of all, it's smart cliche fic, which is one of my favorite things EVER: Lex and Clark are quarantined together for 10 days. Second, it has brilliantly funny dialogue, and gorgeous characterization of both Lex and Clark. And finally, it has sex scenes so wonderful and intense that I literally lose the capacity to form language when I read them. I love D/S, and I particularly love D/S which conveys a particular mood that I can't quite describe in words, but which the "nice friendly game" is a perfect example of.
Hope, Paper. (Implied Clex). A sensual, dreamy, lyrical story in which Lex's skin becomes an artist's canvas, and she paints the story of his desire.
mskatej, Seule et Amoreuse (Lana/Jason, Lana/Chloe, Lana/Lex, Lana/Clark). This may be the best Lana fic ever written in this fandom; it's certainly the hottest. Kate explores Lana's character development and her growth as a person through all her canonical relationships.
rivkat, Skin Deep . Clark turns into a girl, and uses this as an opportunity to get close to Lex. First of all, the panels at Escapade have convinced me that there is not nearly enough genderswap/bodyswap/other types of crackfic in Smallville fandom. Especially given that bodyswap is actually CANON. Seriously, write more, people! Take Rivka's stories as your example. This is a gorgeous, sensual tale of a long summer affair between girl!Clark and Lex, and how Clark uses concealment as an opportunity to reveal things to Lex, and Lex demonstrates how well he really knows Clark.
astolat, Reconcilable Differences. (Clex) I think I read this 6 times the week it came out alone. It's definitely one of my fandom happy places. Kon is technically Clark and Lex's son, since he was created from their genetic material, but Lex has been content to let Clark raise him until Kon gets seriously injured--then Lex steps in, takes over, and proves to be an awesome dad. And as Clark and Lex fight over Kon's treatment, they of course start falling for each other again.
mahaliem, Secrets, Lies, and Misunderstandings. (Clex) Lex misunderstands a conversation Clark is having for his theater class, which leads to a total comedy of errors. This story never fails to make me laugh.
sabershadowkat, Infinite Possibilities series (Clex) A wonderful, incredibly long AU in which Clark and Lex's roles are reversed: Clark's the son of wealthy Martha and Jonathan Kent, and his Kryptonian hormones have made him something of a bad boy; Lex lost both his parents in the meteor strike and though he's been living in the sewers for the past 13 years, he's retained a remarkable innocence. Though their love story is the main plotline of this series, why I love it so much is that it retells the mutant storyline in such a way that the meteor-affected become the heroes, rather than the villains, of the story.
teot's Good Samaritan . (Clex) Clark, bumbling investigative reporter, wants to save the attractive hooker, "Julian," that he picked up to interview about a recent string of murders--but Julian has a secret.
scribblinlenore, Its Now Or Never (Clark/Lex/Alicia). Lex comes to try to rescue Clark after his RedK marriage to Alicia, but ends up getting seduced instead. GOD this story hits so many of my kinks: bondage, threesomes, pegging, RedK Clark, and Lex resisting and resisting temptation until he just can't any more. It's really hard to pick just one of Lenore's stories, but if pressed I'd have to say this was my favorite.
slinkling, Come Back to San Francisco , (Clex) was written especially for me, so I may be biased, but I love it so: In season 2, the lies are tearing Clark and Lex apart, and Clark knows it, but he can't see the way out. There's so much desparate longing for connection in this story, it breaks my heart--but there's still a little bit of hope at the end.
Ciel, The Lionel in Winter . (Clex, though mainly gen). AU in which Lionel has renounced his evil ways and is trying to reconcile with Lex and Lucas at Christmastime. Absolutely hilarious--Lucas and his wife are being chased by the feds, leading to all sort of funny complications, and there is a wonderful OFC cousin who gives Lionel hell. I love this Lionel so very much, too. (I have a real soft spot for authentically-redeemed Lionel, as opposed to the pseudo-redemption we've gotten on the show).
--and I encourage everyone else to post their lists, too, especially if they happen to be stories posted in the last six months or so when maybe I've been a little distracted by new Supernatural love and not reading in SV so much . In fact, I challenge everyone to post lists that don't overlap with the lists that have already been posted, so we have lots of different recs going around. Feel free to substitute vid recs if you don't have fic recs. I was tempted to tag people, but then decided not to--post recs if the spirit moves you.
As always, all of my Smallville recs are available here, and someday when I am organized I will transfer the all to my del.icio.us account.

ps. SPN SUCKS.

Stories that are new to you=best thing ever, yes.
p.s. SPN wins at emo-porn. That just can't be denied.

I've read most of the these and I agree about their awesomeness, though surprisingly I haven't yet come across Koi's A Nice Friendly Game. I love her writing (Mercy is one of my all time favorites) so I'm sure I won't be disappointed. So, do you recommend Gilgamesh despite the possibility that it won't get finished or is the current ending too frustratingly open or something?

(Infinite Possibilities had the most likable AU!lex ever. clark i kept wanting to whack with a kryptonite bat, but lex is lovely.)

I adore Infinite Possibilities. When I get too frustrated with Clark in that story, I remind myself this isn't exactly our Clark--it's a Clark that's very driven by Kryptonian hormones. Plus, he really does want to protect Lex (which of course drives most of the UST in the later chapters), and I love the reversal their, since the usual Clex trope is Lex's desire to protect Clark because of his youth and innocence.

It's one long series of about sic independent stories called "Good Sex, Bad Lex" and it can be found at her site. It starts with "Power Play" here:
http://ellyfanfiction.blogspot.com/2007/10/power-play.html
One disclaimer is that all three main characters in it: Lex, Lana, and Clark (and mostly is just Clex) are dark and completely morally grey.
