Because when we don't like specific plotlines in movies, we fix them . (Serious Captain America: Winter Soldier spoilers)

I'm slowly working my way through Yuletide, though I'm only up to "S." Still, have some recs (and note I'm omitting Arrow and Sleepy Hollow from these, because I think you should just read ALL the stories in those fandoms--they were all excellent, as far as I'm concerned).

A-Babies v. X-babies, I always need to be sure of you. Completely adorable baby Avengers: 5 times Bucky Bear knew he was Steve’s favorite.

Appalachian Murder Ballads, Rose in June . "Nobody in all of God’s earth was going to take us out of our home. We got bit and died, or we got buried and rose back up, and well, that was the Lord’s business. But no way were we walking out of there of our own accord. If they wanted us gone they’d have to drag us out." A zombie twist to a traditional story, with a great narrative voice.

Biblefic, Flowers of Perhaps. I didn’t even remember Michal (David’s first wife), but I generally like Biblefic and decided to give this a try, and it is a gorgeous and heartbreaking look at what it means to be a daughter and wife of royalty in ancient Israel. 30,000 words.

Calvin and Hobbes, Hello Operator, Please Give Me Number Nine. Susie Derkins, now a college senior, plays Calvinball with Death.

Cinderella, The glass slippers. The femslash version of Cinderella.

Fast and the Furious, It's hard to do these things alone. Brian can talk to cars. Seriously awesome.

Fast and the Furious, Dominic and Submission (Dom/Brian). I hadn't realized how much this fandom needed a BDSM AU until I read this.

Galaxy Quest, SMOF. You just don't talk about GalaxyQuestCon 99. One fan finds out exactly why. Awesome story with great fannish meta.

Greek mythology crossover with Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, A New Point of View. Persephone visits the Island of Misfit toys and learns something about herself. This crossover sounded like total crack, but it's actually quite lovely.

Jolene (the Dolly Parton Song) Summer Rain. Very little to do with the actual song, but a really fantastic fantasy AU where Jolene is a mercenary hired by an heir to the throne to help recapture her throne. Excellent world-building.

Legally Blonde, Serious. "Yes," Elle said seriously. "If that is how you identify, I am one hundred percent committed to supporting your self-expression as a queer princess lawyer." Very sweet Elle/Vivan.

Norse Mythology, Parades’ Beginning, Middle and End. Crackalicious Fun. "This is the story of how the Bifrost, also known as the Rainbow Bridge, and the biannual Bifrost Trans Pride parade came to be."

Northern Exposure, It Came From Outer Space. An apocalypse is coming to Cicely, and everyone reacts very much in character. "I've always been an appreciate-the-sunrise kind of guy, but there's something a little bit special about what might be the last one I see from where I sit. This is 'Chris in the Morning' on KBHR, and I wish you a happy apocalypse." Awesome.

Practical Magic, A Pool in a Peaceful Place. A great look at the older Owens sisters--their loves and losses before Sally and Gillian come into their lives.(Includes canonical character deaths)

Shakespeare, Much Ado About Nothing . No More than Reason Beatrice and Benedick adjusting to married life. The dialogue is truly fantastic.

I started watching Agents of SHIELD live with a friend I work with when it premiered, and even though we both think it's fairly awful, we've continued watching it to mock it. I got him hooked on Supernatural as well because it comes on right afterward. In between our conversations about how bad AOS is, I found out that he's a fanboy (I mean, I knew he was an Avengers fanboy, but I found out he knows about fic and used to read a lot of it in SG1 and SGA). I ended up sending him a few recs for SPN fic and now he's hooked on Dean/Cas. I've already recced him everything I have bookmarked, but I haven't actively been reading SPN in a couple years. Anybody have any recent recs for Dean/Cas fic, or know of good rec lists I could pass along?

So as my long family trip winds to a close (I'm flying home tomorrow) I got to spend most of my day with my sister-in-law, who is a very cool person. She and my brother are trying to go vegan for health reasons, so if anyone has recs for good vegan cookbooks, especially kid-friendly ones (she has seven and nine-year-old daughters), that would be awesome.

I also introduced her to the concept of fanfic (I can't believe this is the first time we've talked about it, but on the other hand we're usually hanging out with her kids or my extended family), and as she is a pretty big Dr. Who & Torchwood fan, I am seeking recs. She doesn't seem to have any strong Doctor or Companion preferences, so any recs (or good rec sites) would be welcome. Preferably stuff you would rec to pimp someone into a fandom, since she's never read anything fannish before.

Okay, in case you missed [livejournal.com profile] serrico's recommendation of this amazing vid by dualbunny and sweetestdrain and greensilver, I must boost the signal. You must watch this if you've ever been a Clex fan. I can't say anything more about it except that it is a completely life-changing experience. I don't think I'll ever look at that relationship in the same way again.

I'm not a big fan of Glee, or much of a Kurt/Finn shipper, but I love Aristide's writing so I took a chance on Summer 2010, and wow was it ever worth it. This is a sweet, incredibly happymaking romance, as Finn becomes closer friends with Kurt after being dumped by Rachel, and gradually starts to realize his feelings are more than friendship. I think what I loved most about this story was how well it captured the emotional intensity of first love.

As I move into week 3 of the cold/respiratory infection that will not die, I am in dire need of some cheering up. Anybody have recs for comfort fic--you know, absolute schmoop, humor, fluffy cuddly stories that you just want to wrap around you like a blanket, that sort of thing? Any fandom, really. I'd appreciate them.

I had insomnia last night, and so was up at 4:30 a.m. reading Yuletide stories--which seems to have been a fortuitous time in terms of server load; by 8 a.m. my time I couldn't get anything to load anymore, and then family Christmas craziness took over, and now I'm going to be netless for three days for more family travel. SO just a few recs of the stories I did manage to get through; I'm not sure I'll have time to do any more this year before the reveal.

Thanks!

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] redteekal and [livejournal.com profile] duskwillow for the virtual presents brightening my userinfo page.

OMG, I have so many things to do before I leave town tomorrow it isn't even funny. And then I have to get up at 3:30 for my marathon day of flying; I'm just hoping the east coast blizzards aren't snarling air traffic too much in the west and midwest.

I'm still looking for things to read on my new netbook while travelling, so if you have any suggestions for long fic, especially SPN, J2, Star Trek Reboot, or Harry Potter--especially stuff that's in one long file, like on AOOO or a website, could you let me know? Thanks.

I have an urgent work deadline in 23 minutes, so of course I am posting to LJ. *Headdesk* But anyway, as long as I am procrastinating, [livejournal.com profile] rsadelle is doing a multifandom kink fic recs exchange and is looking for other people to play. I am cheating by recommending something I recommended long, long ago, but it remains, hands-down, my favorite kinky story: Emma Woodhouse's In Your Darkest Dreams . It's Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan, very AU. Qui-Gon has gone over to the Sith, and has captured young Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi, and is planning to do very, very dirty things to him. I can't even tell you how many times I've reread this story. (Bondage, toys, mild d/s. I suppose the beginning is non-con if you squint, but only in a very gentle way.)

Things currently making me happy this morning:

1. [livejournal.com profile] talitha78, angel that she is, sent me the vids from vividcon, so now I have many happy hours of vid watching to look forward to. Yay!! Thank you so much!!

2. My show-promotion-fu seems to be strong these days, since not only is [livejournal.com profile] slinkling working her way through season 1 of SPN, but I've also apparently drawn in [livejournal.com profile] rsadelle by deluging her with J2 recs. Yesterday I couldn't stop babbling at her about Jared and Jensen actually living together, and apparently that tipped the balance or something, since she has actually written a short story snippet about that.

3. [livejournal.com profile] rivkat finally finished posting Captured By the Game , which is a wonderful long SPN AU (Sam/Dean) in which Sam, along with all the other psychic kids, is raised by Azazel and then sent out as an adult to seduce Dean. It's a very compelling look at what Sam and Dean might be like if they were raised apart, and a fascinating re-examination of season 1 from scary!Sam's perspective. It's also a very satisfying romance.

The only thing that is making me sad is that John Connor's emo!hair narrowly lost my poll on the premiere of T:SCC , after leading for most of yesterday afternoon. I liked the emo!hair. (And I'm surprised only ten people on my flist are watching Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. It is awesome and you should totally be watching!)

I would not have predicted that a gen story centered on Ellen Harvelle could have affected me so profoundly, but half an hour after I finished Homing (SPN, author not yet revealed), I am still sitting here staring at my computer screen with my mouth open in awe. One of the best character pieces I've ever read--it seamlessly weaves what we know of Ellen from canon with a backstory for how she got into hunting, looking at three pivotal time periods in her life. And even though the reader knows the outcome of at least two of these events, it's still amazingly suspenseful, not to mention very insightful about how people deal with loss, and how it shapes who we become. I cannot recommend this highly enough to anyone who likes Supernatural.

Here are some more recs from this year's SPN/J2 bigbang, this time a mixed bag: J2 and SPN (including gen, het, and Wincest)

Cut for length )

I keep meaning to do some recs, since I've been obsessively reading SPN/J2 BigBang stories, and finally got around to doing a dozen of them. These are all actually J2 recs, mainly leaning toward AU since those are the type I tend to like best. Cut for length )

So, I was recently complaining to someone about the dearth of actual sex in all the Tony/Pepper fic I'd been reading. A big exception to that is [livejournal.com profile] svilleficrecs's stuff, especially the newly posted story Irreparable, which has tons of sex, albeit of the deeply fucked up kind. Pepper sees something she shouldn't; Tony reacts and things get out of control; then after Pepper gets kidnapped their relationship gets even more seriously messed up. Parts of this story are quite dark (I would heed the warnings at the beginning), but it's wonderfully done: psychologically complex, fascinating, hot and disturbing--yet with a believable happy ending.
norwich36: (watching TV)
I actually typed out a long rec list and then forgot to email it to myself, so it's sitting on my work computer probably til Monday. But for the moment, go and read [livejournal.com profile] atrata's Turning Your Orbit Around, which is the story of 5 inappropriate gifts Tony gives people. I think I hurt myself from laughing so hard at this story.

Hmm, it's probably time to get myself some Ironman icons, if I'm going to keep recommending stories.

I've been reading a fair bit of Iron Man fic lately, mostly Tony/Pepper --I am hoping to get together a rec list at some point --but in the meantime, [livejournal.com profile] basingstoke has just posted a completely awesome Ironman/Spiderman story, Paparazzo , which features a completely adorable Peter rescuing Tony from a bad situation and then learning a few things from him. Go! Read! And if anyone out there gets motivated to write more Tony/Peter, I really wouldn't complain.

I admit I've been unfaithful, dallying with other hot fandoms (especially SPN), but meeting with other Smallville fans at Escapade, and seeing all the new names pop up on the different SV comms, and reading posts like this one by [livejournal.com profile] svmadelyn, make me remember how much I love this fandom. And really, the "ten stories I love (or love to reread) in Smallville fandom" really ought to be a meme, so here is my list of Ten Smallville stories I love to reread )--and I encourage everyone else to post their lists, too, especially if they happen to be stories posted in the last six months or so when maybe I've been a little distracted by new Supernatural love and not reading in SV so much . In fact, I challenge everyone to post lists that don't overlap with the lists that have already been posted, so we have lots of different recs going around. Feel free to substitute vid recs if you don't have fic recs. I was tempted to tag people, but then decided not to--post recs if the spirit moves you.

As always, all of my Smallville recs are available here, and someday when I am organized I will transfer the all to my del.icio.us account.

First of all, thanks to all you anonymous folks that gave me love in [livejournal.com profile] svmadelyn's Valentine's Game . Smooches to you all!!

And speaking of the marvellous things about fandom....Last night, when I was simultaneously watching the season finale of "Psych" and reading SPN fic (well, during the commercials) I thought, hmm, wouldn't a Psych/SPN crossover be fun to read? And then today without even deliberately looking for one I happened to stumble across [livejournal.com profile] trolllogicfics's Burnt Ash and Golden Eyes , which is marvellous. It turns out that Shawn Spencer is actually one of the "special" kids from Supernatural. It's hilarious, and has a marvellous Shawn voice (his conversation with the YED is especially funny), and great interactions with Gus. The Winchester brothers aren't a very big presence in the story, but they're there too. If you like Psych and know anything about the SPN-verse you'll like this story.
