Important Star Trek polls

I was going to go on a rant about some recent Star Trek fic I've been reading, since it seems to lack knowledge of the original series by populating Star Fleet Academy (or Earth in general) with aliens that seem very unlikely to me. But maybe in my two viewings of the new movie, I'm just missing something? So before I rant, a poll, behind a cut since I suppose it is slightly spoilery for the movie--and I expect the comments to be very spoilery:

So did the Federation make peace with the Klingons when I wasn't paying attention? I suppose, in theory, first contact with the Romulans may have come earlier because of the events of ST:XI, but I don't remember anything about the Klingons. Yet I've been reading Star Trek fic and they're all over the place on Earth--even in Star Fleet Academy!--and it's driving me crazy. So am I misremembering something, or is the movie just drawing a lot of new fans totally ignorant of TOS canon?

And have we come to a consensus about how we're abbreviating this movie yet? Because delicious certainly doesn't think so, and apparently I am obsessive enough about my tags that this is driving me crazy. I know I already asked this a couple weeks ago, but I didn't really get a lot of responses.

I did a thoroughly unscientific examination of the tags on about seven stories related to the new film that were each saved by at least 20 people, and found there is still a lot of disagreement. "Star Trek" is the most common tag, but not very helpful in distinguishing this Trek from other incarnations. The most common tags I found were Star Trek:XI (24 uses), Star Trek: Reboot (20 uses); Star Trek: 09 (7 uses); Star Trek: AOS (which I believe stands for Alternate Original Series) (3 uses); and newtrek (2 uses).

What do you think, oh fandom?

Tellarites and Andorians are the likeliest, them being founding members and all. I don't think the Cardassians would have made first contact at this point, but the first time they did it was hostile, so very unlikely. Betazed is very close to Vulcan, so it's possible. In the original timeline, they didn't officially join the Federation until around the time of the first Trek movie, but with the Reboot, that could have changed. So they're a little more likely. If you REALLY want to throw a monkey wrench into things, you could have the Bajorans there (it is pre-Cardassian invasion, so they'd probably be interested).

I wouldn't be surprised to see Trill involved in the Fleet. They were definitely around in TOS timeline. Emony and Bones after all. Plus that'd be FUN. *G*

I would have said no Cardassians, but I'm pretty sure I remember a throw-away line about them in the movie. That said, it'd be weird for them to have much peaceful contact with the Federation.

Indeed, a drink called a Cardassian Sunset got mentioned. It threw me for a huge loop since the Federation was only recently supposed to have made regular contact with the Cardassians in TNG. That, and everyone knows that no one else in the universe can stomach Cardassian drinks. :P

Yeah, I think Betazoids and Trill seem most arguable, of the new aliens introduced in TNG, for the reasons you mentioned.

Bajorans would be very interesting in this timeline--though really I only mentioned Bajorans and Cardassians because of the "Cardassian sunset," and I suppose that could theoretically be named after their star rather than being an authentic Cardassian drink.
