Is it even *possible* to be a hippy geek emo goth? Since that's apparently what I am! Hee! Considering that emo is about 18 years past my high school days, that's saying something.

[identity profile] bop-radar.livejournal.com 2006-02-22 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
HA! This is possibly the silliest meme I have seen yet. I got next to no points for most of them, since a lot of the descriptions don't really fit the social categories in Aus, and anyway, I'm not really easily categories. Except as a geek.I scored 8 on that one. Geek first, hippie second, apparently.

I have to ask: bongos or ukelele?

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2006-02-22 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
Bongos. (Though really, a Native American-ish drum, that I am most inexpert on).

(Deleted the other comment because I am paranoid about someone I work with recognizing me because of the specificity).

I think you need to find an Australian version of this meme: what are the subcultures there?

[identity profile] bop-radar.livejournal.com 2006-02-22 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
Well, some are the same. I was a goth in my teens, briefly. And they still exist here. (Little goths are so cute! And I love it when their make-up runs in the heat!) Inheritance from that subculture: a tendency to wave my arms around dramatically when I dance.

Then I was an indie kid. Which meant being into britpop (suede, pulp, blur, radiohead, etc) and wearing one-star sneakers with tights and little dresses to nightclubs. I liked the indie crowd. They didn't drink to excess, they were intelligent... they were somewhat maudlin. It was all good. That was my dominant subculture for my uni days and I have deep fondness for it still, though it has died a DEATH.

Then rave culture had it's time. That too has died. I was on the edges of that but never went crazy as a raver. No fluoro or angel wings for me! But I did have platform sneakers.

Subcultures big in Aus at the moment: hip-hop (no idea why!), emo (for the little ones), surfers, bogans (um... they wear tight acid wash denim jeans with moccasins and listen to ACDC and breed young?), wogs (Greek/Italian second-generation-ers), punk (small revival at the moment). We don't call people 'preppies' here, but I guess there's something like that. In my school, we called them 'trendites' but there's no real established name for them. We've got rednecks too, sadly. Some overlap with bogans there. And also there's a lot of Asian subcultures here--I haven't really included them.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2006-02-22 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Interesting! I'm not sure I could do as well with the subcultures here, if I didn't have a pre-existing list.

[identity profile] bop-radar.livejournal.com 2006-02-22 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It was fun to think about actually. I realised belatedly that I should clarify one thing: 'wogs' was originally a derogatory term for European immigrants, but has been embraced by the second or third generation kids. There are lots of wog commedians who really play with the stereotype (hotted up cars playing loud 'doof doof' music, slutty girls with possessive brothers, family obligations/pressure, etc.). Nowadays there is some 'cool' status to wog-dom.

hee! you are noticing icons more now that you have your own range, right?

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2006-02-23 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Oops, should check what account I'm logged in on before posting. Um, what I said before--I am noticing them a little more, but it depends if I'm reading on my dial-up account or at work, since at home I often don't get to see the icons.

[identity profile] bop-radar.livejournal.com 2006-02-23 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Ah! That is one of the saddest things I've heard all day... not that I've heard many sad things yet. *g* I love icons. *states the obvious*

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2006-02-23 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
I have been contemplating getting a faster internet connection at home, but since I'm paid up through June on dial-up, it won't be any time soon. (And realistically speaking, it's not in my budget).

Icons are pretty, for sure. (I find myself mesmerized by my own icons, lately, and also checking out the sv icon communities. Pretty soon I'll be paying for extra icons space....)

That Kara and Lee one is cute, but I think I like "You're going down, Smallville" better.

[identity profile] bop-radar.livejournal.com 2006-02-23 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Ah yes! Well I'm holding back my best BSG icons because they contain spoilers! Although I am fond of animateds... so...

(I understand on the budgetary constraints! If I didn't have my boy helping pay for broadband, I would not be here. He is a blessing!)

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2006-02-23 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for not spoiling me with your icons. (And this one is classic! And I agree, he should totally lose the towel!)

[identity profile] bop-radar.livejournal.com 2006-02-23 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
Spoilers in icons are the worst.

And hee. Yes!

[identity profile] myownghost.livejournal.com 2006-02-22 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
oh, you write poems? *perking up ears*

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2006-02-22 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I *used* to write extremely bad poetry when I was in high school, so I checked that box. But a few weeks ago, when someone (rose_emily, maybe?) was asking in a joking way for comments in the form of haikus, I tried to write her a sonnet and failed miserably. There was a time when I was 16 when I used to be able to think in iambic pentameter, but that time appears to have passed.

[identity profile] myownghost.livejournal.com 2006-02-22 03:17 pm (UTC)(link)
that's impressive, though. i have never been able to rhyme or to write in strict meter. all my poems are free-versey and owe more to poetry slams than to the historical greats. the mailguy will be bringing me a hardback collection of t.s. eliot in a couple of days. i used to Fear Him [eliot, not the mailguy], because in college i was taught that he was Difficult; but now that i'm all grown up, i find him rapturously wonderful.

there's a scene in a film i just watched, L.I.E. (rather disturbing movie), in which the kid seduces an older man by gorgeously quoting whitman. could've been a cliche, but it wasn't. i belong to the Church of Poetry, btw. and now i'll shut up. (the waitress must've given me regular instead of decaf at breakfast, sorry!)

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2006-02-22 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Does Lex recite poetry to someone in canon, or am I thinking of a story? Because I definitely have a mental image of Lex reciting poetry to Lana and Chloe, I think, and being very hot while doing it. I think it is a story, now that I think of it, but I can't remember which one. The poem is something about eating figs. Hmm. It might be that body-switching story by Rivkat? It escapes me now.

I *love* Eliot. "Murder in the Cathedral" is probably my favorite play.

[identity profile] myownghost.livejournal.com 2006-02-22 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
yes, that sounds familiar. i like rivka's stories! i'll look around to see if i can find that.

maybe reading eliot will be good for my writing. *g*

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2006-02-22 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, it was indeed Switch (http://smallville.slashdom.com/archive/17/switcha.html), which I couldn't remember the name of this morning. And the poem is D.H. Lawrence, "Figs."

[identity profile] myownghost.livejournal.com 2006-02-22 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
thank you! that's what i'll read this evening. :)

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2006-02-22 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, and another Lex-reciting-poetry story: one of Thamiris', the one where Clark has to write a paper on some Beat poet. (My memory is clearly gone this morning).

[identity profile] myownghost.livejournal.com 2006-02-22 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
When a Strawberry Is Pushed into a Mountain? great story!
linky

i also like the story by Dogpoet that has both clark and lex writing poems. yum.
Language of Love

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2006-02-22 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, yes, that's the title. And I like that Dogpoet story too.
