Smutrecs fest, day 6

If today's recs have a common theme, it is "scary father figures."

Today's Clex rec of the day is [livejournal.com profile] hrd02ca's "And Desire Shall Fail" .

"And Desire shall fail" is still a WIP, but it looks like it will be finished soon, and believe me, it is worth the wait! It's an AU in which Clark was captured by scientists at a very young age and subjected to many cruel experiments (hence its inclusion among "scary father figures" day), and eventually retaliated by taking over the world when he finally escaped. Oh, and one of his slaves just happens to be Lex Luthor. The overlord has no time for most of his slaves, but there's something about Lex.....

Overlord Kal is one of my favorite Clarks ever, but what I love about [livejournal.com profile] hrd02ca's story is that it has very realistic characterizations of both Kal-El and Lex, and Lex does not simply submit to Kal-El willingly. (I also love, for some reason, how *incompetent* Kal is in this story, since that seems very realistic for a dictatorship by someone with no political or government experience whatsoever). You should be warned that the porny parts don't really start until Book 4 or so, but the build-up is *definitely* worth it.

Edited to add This story is now complete, and the whole story can be read at the author's website here: http://members.shaw.ca/hrd02ca/adsf.html

The mystery Smallville rec of the day is Kel,
"Invitation."
(INCEST, non-connish overtones, character death implied offscreen) Lionel/Lex, Lionel/Jonathan implied, Clark/Jonathan implied

Every so often I get the urge to read smut that is evil and twisted and deeply perverse. (I think I actually developed this desire in Harry Potter fandom, and I know I sometimes wish there were some Smallville authors that were just as creatively perverse as certain HP authors). This story comes the closest of any in Smallville fandom to what I mean: this is beyond ordinary Luthorcest and into twisted dirty!wrong territory.

In this story, the price that Jonathan paid for Clark's adoption was sexual service to Lionel, and up until now he wasn't entirely unwilling to pay that price. However, when he is forced to watch Lionel and Lex's sex games, he reaches a breaking point where he can't cope with his own horrified arousal and the other feelings the scene awakens in him. Like Jonathan, the reader is drawn into the eroticism of the scene (though I hope the reader's *response* isn't as violent as Jonathan's).

The blast from the past rec for today is Apache,
"Famous Vachons for 400, Please Alex"
. (Lucien Lacroix/Javier Vachon)

The reason today is "bad dad" day is that it is Lucien Lacroix day. (Ok, technically it's "Forever Knight" day, but although I did enjoy Nick Knight's angsty vampiric manpain as he sought redemption for his evil deeds, really the reason I kept watching was Lucien Lacroix, his vampiric master). Lacroix makes Lionel Luthor look like Jonathan Kent. He is pure evil, but amazingly charismatic and compelling. This story does a terrific job of conveying his distinctive blend of magnetism and menace. Apache is an *amazing* writer (I think she actually got some of her FK stuff professionally published, if I recall correctly), and she actually made me tolerate Tracy Vetter (Nick's new partner in the third season, who replaced the beloved Schanke) and Javier Vachon (a vampire in love with Tracy).

In this story, Vachon is very, very straight--and has been for his 400 years as a vampire--but LaCroix manages to persuade him that sexual orientation is really beside the point for vampires.

I haven't read ADSF yet, I keep on meaning too, but you know how it is once you get behind and things. But since you say I should catch up, I will. One day.

I'm actually pretty sure I've never read any overlord!Clark at all.

*ponders*

Really? You've never read [livejournal.com profile] seperis's "A Handful of Dust"? (http://smallville.slashdom.com/archive/7/ahandful.html) That's the classic, and I can mention it because it's *not* the story by her I'm reccing later this month (must maintain *some* suspense). Another overlord!Clark story I can mention because I'm not reccing it later is Lenore's "Captive" (http://scribblinlenore.popullus.net/captive.html) and its sequel "Captive 2" (http://scribblinlenore.popullus.net/captive2.html)

oooh cool.

And no, I haven't. I *know* that its a classic and that I perhaps, the only member of the entire fandom that has never read it but...er...yes.

I have no excuse here.

Hee! It's not a homework assignment, so I don't think you need to feel guilty. It is very long and not everyone's cup of tea, emotionally speaking.

HP was my first fandom, when i stumbled into slash a few years ago. oh, i sampled a couple of LOTR stories first, but i'm old enough to prefer a sexless middle earth, i think. *g*

i was often flabbergasted by how perverse some of the HP authors were. some of the stories i couldn't read at all. some i read but regretted it, because they left me with icky mental images. and then some of them hit all my own kink buttons. funny how that can happen. (do you have a favorite pairing?)

i still have part of the mulder/krycek you recommended yesterday to read this morning. that makes me happy. :)

I'm not sure I have a favorite pairing in HP, though most of the stories I've been reading lately are Harry/Snape and Harry/Draco. I like Snape with pretty much anyone, though. (I'm due to recommend Harry Potter in about 8 days, I believe, since I'm going sequentially through my older fandoms).

And you know, I agree with you about LOTR--I've read a *few* stories in that fandom that I liked, but they were mostly gen. I think part of it is that much as I loved the movies, I've reread the books about 30 times since I was a kid, and most of the stories I've read just don't capture the language and mythology the way I would want them to.

[identity profile] myownghost.livejournal.com 2006-02-06 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
i like snape with just about anyone too. i started out reading mostly harry/snape, but got to liking lupin more and more, and the "snupin" pairing can work wonderfully.

oddly, the most successful LOTR pairing i ran across was gimli/legolas, maybe because their unlikely friendship was canon.

btw, i finished the X-Files story, had forgotten how sad it is! now i'll read Grope of Destiny to feel cheerful again. (cuervo gold, boo hoo. *g*)

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2006-02-06 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
A lot of the good M/K was sad, alas, because it's pretty hard to come up with a realistic happy ending, considering their circumstances. (I wish I could remember some nice fluffy M/K to cheer you up, but it's been too long since I was reading actively in that fandom.)

I agree that Legolas/Gimli is practically canon, but I would say Frodo/Sam is, too, so I can't really explain why I didn't get into those pairings.

[identity profile] myownghost.livejournal.com 2006-02-06 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
no, i see your point. they're too far apart in worldview, and alex is in too much danger skulking around to be with him. but they sure make a hot couple!

i tried several different kinds of LOTR stories and just didn't respond to them. one long story that paired boromir (who somehow didn't die) and faramir was interesting but veered off into the goofy all too often, especially when aragorn, arwen, and eowyn got in on the action. it began to feel almost blasphemous to me. *g* i scurried back to HP and then discovered SV. mmm. :)

Well, more to the point, the best-case scenario for M/K "happily ever after" still has them on the run from the aliens and the Cancerman types, which doesn't ever qualify as happy fluffy fic, in my opinion. But if you like M/K, and you haven't read Torch's M/K, I would go now and do so immediately: http://www.strangeplaces.net/torch/xfstories.html (There may even be some happy fic there, among the shorter pieces). I'd recommend her recommendations, too--I can't even tell you how many great authors and fandoms I discovered through her recs: http://www.strangeplaces.net/torch/recommend.html

oh, thank you so much! i'll enjoy reading there. :)

Wow, I'm so incredibly flattered! Thank you!
