Many random things

I don't usually go to (non-work-related) social events during the week, but an old colleague was in town last night and talked me into going to see "Tropic Thunder," and I have to say I laughed my ass off. Really my favorite part of the whole thing was the fake trailers, especially the medieval gay monks with Toby McGuire and RDJ. I just about sprained something laughing at that. And they did such an excellent job of skewering every single Vietnam movie cliche. I went to the film for RDJ, who was completely excellent, but I have to agree with the people who said Tom Cruise was the best performance of the entire film. He could possibly even make me like him again if he continued to take roles that are so against type.

Now I have two completely unrelated requests for my all-knowing flist:

1. Anyone out there who is widely read in CW RPS, can you point me to some good stories with Jensen/Christian Kane or Jared/Jensen/Christian Kane? I have a friend looking for recs, and I don't usually read stories with Chris as a central character, so I'm at a loss.

2. Should I update to the latest version of Firefox, now that it keeps prompting me to every 12 hours or so? I know it doesn't work with LJ Hook, but that's not a big concern for me, but I've heard there's something wonky about the new address bar, or something? What are the pros and cons of switching?

i updated to the new firefox today, and so far i don't like the changes. they needlessly complicated the bookmarks, for one thing. wish i hadn't updated!

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
In what way did they complicate bookmarks? Because that's actually the one thing I think IE does better than Firefox; I *hate* firefox bookmarks.

[identity profile] daisydumont.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
they added a few categories so that the drop-down list is very long. i deleted all i could. mostly i'm the type who gets comfy with a setup and is easily rattled by new stuff! (i hate the new IE still, after months.) i don't like it that you have to open a separate window to move bookmarks around in firefox, i have to admit. i'm always moving and/or editing bookmarks.

here, have some john glover. love the Snuggles icon!

The biggest plus about the new firefox, imo, is that it asks if you want to save your tabs to open back up as they are the next time you turn your computer on. I LOVE that. I was bummed about the LJ hook at first, but I got over that fairly quickly. :)

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, that would be good. (Though I usually achieved the same effect by shutting off my computer without shutting down Firefox).

You haven't had any problems with the new address bar?

No problems at all. The only thing I've seen different is that when you start typing in the address, it gives you a drop-down list of the places you normally go (like if I start to type in "am" it will guess "amazon"). I don't use it much, but it could come in handy.

I'm confused, because my Firefox already does that. That's a new feature?

Huh. It was for me. I'm confused now, too. ;P

Okay, I thought some more on it, and I know what you're talking about now. But it is different and better with then new Firefox. Maybe it's just shinier? I don't know, but I do love the new version a lot, all the way around. :)

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2008-08-28 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm. I just updated and so far I'm kind of hating it. It ate my delicious bookmarklets, and I can't figure out how to get them back, because the things delicious is telling me to do don't seem to correspond to the new toolbar. I don't suppose you've figured this out?

Never mind--I figured it out. It just took me a while because I couldn't quite figure out where things were on the new Firefox.

Old Firefox does that too. Tools -> Options -> Main and When Firefox starts select "show my windows and tabs from last time." Fucking best thing ever, because I can close Firefox or restart the computer as many times as I want and all the stuff I'm reading is all still there.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2008-08-28 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. And right now I am thinking old Firefox is superior, and wishing I had not updated. :(

[identity profile] skuf.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm terrible at new things, so I did take me a week or two t get comfortable with Firefox 3. But once I did, I'm very happy with it :o)

I've heard there's something wonky about the new address bar, or something?
Assuming you mean the Awesome Bar? It's AWESOME!! Again, it took me a bit to learn how to use it/get used to it, but I have seen the light, and can't imagine how I ever got along without it. Seriously, seriously awesome, I swears!!

(And it's possible you can get LJ Hook to work by editing the code - eh, can look it up, if you want. Meanwhile, here's a thread that may be worth following up on: http://community.livejournal.com/mozilla/423812.html.)

[identity profile] skuf.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
And there may be a fix for LJ Hook here, but it's locked, so I can't tell you what it is: http://kymbr.livejournal.com/58951.html?mode=reply&style=mine (via here: http://mskatej.livejournal.com/269340.html?thread=9773852#t9773852).

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Why is it awesome, if I may ask?

[identity profile] skuf.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Because it guesses at which site you're trying to open. So if I want to open e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stargate_Atlantis_(season_5), in Firefox 2 I start typing en.wikipedia.org etc., and the more of the entire url I type, the more likely the top result is the page I'm looking for (as opposed to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wirth's_law or even http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stargate_Atlantis_(season_3) ).

But in Firefox 3, I type wiki 5, and Firefox TOTALLY KNOWS I want http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stargate_Atlantis_(season_5) ! And it gets cleverer the more you use it! It is Awesome, *nods*.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
As I said to Kristi above, my Firefox already does that. I am confused. I definitely don't have version 3 downloaded.

[identity profile] skuf.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
So if you're looking for e.g. an LJ comm, you can type the comm name in the address bar, and it'll give you results for it? I'm pretty sure my Firefox 2 didn't do that - I had to type community.livejournal etc.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
As soon as I start typing, I get a drop-down box with all the possible results starting with what I've typed. Is that what you get? Or is it more like Netscape (ah, remember back in the olden days of Netscape?) where it actually completes the address for you as you type?

[identity profile] beck-liz.livejournal.com 2008-08-28 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, what will happen is this: I'll start typing "Post" for "post an entry" and it will fill in http://www.livejournal.com/update.bml. Stuff like that. Or I can start by typing in the name of the community, instead of the URL, like just starting with "Who" for [livejournal.com profile] who_daily. You do, of course, have to have already been there before for it to work, but it's a very nice feature.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2008-08-28 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Except that I was very efficient at using the old system, and the new one is kind of driving me crazy. I guess I'll get used to it.

[identity profile] skuf.livejournal.com 2008-08-29 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
It did me, too, as I said, because I was so used to the old way - but trust me, when you get the hang of it, you'll realize how much more Awesome it is :o) !

And I'm glad someone was able to explain it; I was trying to be clear, but obviously not :oD
