SPN: Lucifer rising

Just brief reactions, nothing too coherent.

Wow, that wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be. If Lucifer *is* going to take over Sam's body, at least he hasn't done so yet. And after some extremely necessary prodding from Bobby (I CHEERED--I literally stood up and cheered--after he gave Dean that speech about how family was supposed to make you miserable, and John was a coward and Dean was better than him) Dean actually wanted to make up with Sam. And Sam clearly, clearly wanted to do the same with Dean, except insofar as he thought he was doing a kamikaze thing that would destroy him to save the world and he wanted to keep Dean out of it.

So as long as the brothers aren't emotionally at war, I'm actually ok with the whole apocalypse.

All right, not really. I was yelling and shouting and screaming at my TV, futilely of course, thoughout the whole episode, saying things like "Sam, NO, don't kill the helpless woman--I'm sure that's what's actually going to turn you to the dark side--didn't you learn from Jus in Bello no innocent sacrifices?" and "Castiel, STOP BEING A MASSIVE DICK" and "Zachariah, I want to send you to hell" and "Run faster, Dean, you stupid sonofabitch, don't just stand there" and stuff like that. But it was fine--that was just plotty suspense things, not things that threatened to tear up my heart with a meat-grinder.

I did love that Ruby's deep game finally got revealed, and I also love the fact that she didn't get to live to see her vindication. Ha ha ha ha ha. That's what you get when you make stupid evil overlord speeches before you've actually won, my dear. And yet of course the speech was entirely necessary on an exposition level, both so we knew precisely how much she'd been playing Sam *and* because now we know that Sam's powers are his own; Dumbo didn't need the feather to fly. I think, assuming Lucifer doesn't just possess his body, that Sam's powers are going to turn out to be quite useful in battling the apocalypse.

(I am sticking my fingers in my ear and going lalalalala I can't hear you when it comes to the possibility that Sam has crossed some evilness threshold in agreeing to sacrifice that woman, and now maybe he won't be able to prevent Lucifer from possessing him, because....just because. He was repenting there at the end, and he's not Lucifer yet, dammit, so Dean is not going to have to kill him).

I felt so bad for Dean, imprisoned in the holodeck-from-hell for most of the action. Zachariah is pretty much the creepiest creep ever, isn't he, offering holographic Ginger and Maryanne to distract Dean from the fact that his brother's in danger. Oh my GOD I have never wanted to see a character painfully die so much in my LIFE. Especially after that very disturbing line about this not being the first planetary enema they've delivered. ARGH. DIE DIE DIE you smug fucking asshole, who values human life somewhat less than Uriel did.

Just one more thing: I'm glad they brought it all back to Azazel's plan, because I have been wondering whether Azazel and Lilith were in league or opposing forces for a while, and it was satisfying to get that answered.

No, I make it two more things: The Prophet Chuck has now been jossed! (Or maybe we should call it "Deaned" or "Castieled")--so destiny's off the table, and it's two brothers and one slightly fallen angel versus the forces of heaven and hell next year. YAY!!! That should be kickass! And I'm just so glad we're not going to have the summer of the rift, since that would have sincerely sucked.

Just as long as Lucifer doesn't end up possessing Sam (or Dean), I'm totally psyched about next year's storyline.

Also, I forgot to mention that I adored Bobby's speech, too. *loves Bobby so much*

Verdict: Awesomeness.

Also of note: Dean and Castiel almost breaking up. The most pop culture references in dialogue in an SPN ep ever. Bobby not dying.

I LOVED the end, both with Sam holding Ruby up for Dean to kill her, and with him saying he's sorry. Jared did a very nice job with that.

Yeah. The last minute or so of the episode was COMPLETELY AWESOME.

And while one part of me didn't want Ruby to die (I loved her snark, and she would have made a great antagonist--heck, maybe Lucifer could have possessed her) it was a really interesting bit of symbolism to have Sam and Dean collectively eliminate the person who has been the biggest barrier to their relationship this season, and the biggest traitor. (I could have done without the sexual symbolism, though I suppose that's hard to escape with the knife as the only effective weapon).

Satisfied and relieved and yes yes yes Sam and Dean together against everyone else! Who are all revealed to be nasty! And Sam&Dean clutching is like, the sweetest way to send us into a hiatus ever.

(And that guy who was Azazel, why did he look familiar? He was kinda my least favorite Azazel-actor but I really liked seeing ol' YED at the start of it all.)

Yeah, he's been in lots of things though I don't know his name. He was an awful Azazel, I agree, though it was still nice to get closure.

SAMNDEAN FOREVER! Though I honestly feel like Kripke played all of us as effectively as Ruby did Sam; we were so worried about the rift between the boys that we don't really care about the apocalypse itself.

Schmapocalypse, indeed. :) Sam&Dean is the world.

That scene with Azazel will fit perfectly into my Mary and Azazel vid that I would make if I only knew how to vid.

Just--yes. I typed pretty much the same line about being okay with the Apocalypse, and then I saw this, and I was like, cf. [livejournal.com profile] norwich36!

I agree with you about tying up loose ends, about the satisfaction of Ruby's monologue and seeing this resolved. I think Genevieve Cortese did a good (or bad, depending on how important The Big Reveal moments are to you, I suppose), of letting her character's true intentions become more and more visible as we approached this episode--her eyes seemed to get more and more cunning and calculating, her smile more and more creepy, and by the end of the last episode I was like, YOU BETRAYING BITCH. Er. So yes.

I don't think Dean will have to kill Sam--I just do not see any way in which they could justify that, in which they could morph his character to make that acceptable to him, unless it was a joint plan between the two of them and they both went in a blaze of fire, or something. I had my doubts about Kripke's appreciation of my I Am Here For SamnDean But Only If They Are Like SamnEric, Or At Least Like SamnEric In The End, Man, feling but then he showed that he understood that, so I don't see the creators moving so completely away from it. We'll see, I suppose?

But yes. I was nervous about this like nothing, and for the first time I didn't spoil myself prior to watching, but I saw this post early today and it said "mood: relieved", and I was much with the YAY, which I also second.

Yeah, I disagree with the rest of fandom about Cortese's acting ability--I think she was fine (even if quite different from KC)and like you I think she's been dropping subtle hints about her own agenda for a while.

I'm still worried about Lucifer possibly possessing Sam, and what that will mean, though I hope you're right that they're not going there.

(I'm not sure if I should apologize for the mood spoiler or not, since you were happy to see it).
