I know Kripke said he had a five year plan, but he also said there was no such thing as angels. So, I think that all of season five was a fly-by-the-seat-of-his-pants type ordeal that's the only way I can explain away the pacing issues.
My theory is that Chuck and Becky are actually still together on a Caribbean cruise. God just wanted in on the very end and has a flair for dramatic narrating so he beamed into Chuck's house and typed up the last chapter of the book.
I think the main pacing issues in season 5 were due to the fact that after three years of thinking they were going to be cancelled, they had to deal with a possibility of season 6, so they had to change certain things and leave certain things open-ended.
And while I'm sure that Kripke's 5-year plan was hardly set in stone--they had to deal with curve balls like the writer's strike, which altered their plan for Sam in s3--I'm pretty sure that he had the emotional arc of the brothers' journey completely planned out.

Anything can happen and consequences cannot be escaped. This finale blew that to Hell with Lucifer and Michael. Again, check the brown streaks on it.

As I recall that was where Dean sat in the Season 1 finale in the truck and car wreck. That soldier was lost then, if it was ever there in the first place.
This episode just exasperated me. Good thing that we probably won't see Season 6 until 2011. I'll have forgotten it by then. The last five or six episodes of this season lost all of its narrative threads and most of the characterization. And I include that awful 100th episode in that evaluation. Mr. Kripke couldn't wait to get out and it showed.
Well, I really disagree about the loss of characterization and narrative threads. Actually, I pretty much disagree with your whole comment, but it sounds like we're approaching the episode from such different angles that it wouldn't be really productive to argue about it.
I wrote pretty much this in my (unposted as of now) review. In my head, this would have made a perfect series ending (with both Sam and Dean in the pit). I've never believed that they would have a "happy ending", but always thought that they would die side-by-side for some heroic cause. This could've been that moment, except the knowledge of a sixth season sort of made all of that anticlimactic for me.
As for Chuck, I think that was just Kripke being cheeky about the writer as God. Isn't every writer God to his/her own creations? :) I actually quite liked that last narration about the difficulty of writing endings, which is another reason I'm disappointed this wasn't the series finale, because everything was set up perfectly for it to be the end.
Well, I agree that the real series finale is probably going to be anticlimactic now, but I'm happy to have more Sam and Dean, so I guess I'm torn on the season 6 thing.
